Michigan State announces no positives among 250 COVID-19 tests

Less than two weeks after clearing quarantine, MSU football is free of COVID-19.

Finally some good COVID-19 news for Michigan State.

Two weeks after the entire football team cleared a mandatory two-week quarantine, Michigan State has announced that 250 COVID-19 tests from August 7-14 resulted in zero positives.

These results come less than a month after 16 athletes and four staff members tested positive at the end of July.

The good testing results are perhaps too little too late as the Big Ten announced last week the fall sports season would be postponed to the spring, taking football with it.

There has been some momentum among players, coaches and parents in restoring the fall season. Multiple parent associations sent letters to Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren urging him to restore the season. Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has been public in his displeasure with the cancelation of the season as has Ohio State’s Ryan Day. A petition started by OSU quarterback Justin Fields pushing for the fall season to be restarted has gained more than 300,000 signatures.

Michigan State coach Mel Tucker has been publicly supportive of the Big Ten’s decision and told media last week that the Spartans would be gearing back and starting up a six-and-a-half-week weight and conditioning period.

In total Michigan State has conducted more than 1,000 tests on athletes and staff members since workouts resumed in early June with 35 positives. Of the more than 800 tests given to athletes, 30 were positive, while just five of the 235 tests for staff members yielded positive results.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on college football: “I want to see it played”

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp took to Twitter to give his statement on the current college football situation. Read his quotes here

With the Big Ten and Pac-12 electing to postpone their respective seasons to the spring of 2021, the SEC, ACC and Big 12 conferences are still scrambling to find a way to play football this fall.

A day after President Donald Trump said it would be a “tragic mistake” not to play football this fall, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon to give his statement on the prospect of college football in Georgia.

Kemp wrote:

“Across the South, college football is a sacred tradition, and I want to see it played this year if we can ensure the safety of players, coaches and staff.”

Kemp retweeted SEC commissioner Greg Sankey’s Tuesday tweet that came after the Big 10 and Pac-12’s postponement decision. Sankey said he “remains comfortable”, with the SEC’s approach to playing football during  the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although the league continues to deliberate how the season can go on, SEC practices are scheduled to begin Monday and, as of now, kickoff is slated for Sept. 26.

BREAKING: Big Ten presidents vote to postpone football season

There will be no Big Ten football this fall.

There will be no Big Ten football played this fall.

According to multiple reports the Big Ten has voted to postpone the fall sports season–including football–with hopes of playing in the spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Detroit Free Press’ Chris Solari was the first to report the news.

The Big Ten has yet to formally make an announcement at the time of publishing.

Power brokers from the conference have been meeting the last few days to decide the fate of the conference’s biggest moneymaking sport. It was reported on Sunday that cancelation was impending and on Monday it was reported that the decision had been finalized. However a last-ditch effort from the Big Ten players and coaches attempted to save the season, with multiple parties throwing their weight behind the effort, including President Donald Trump.

The effort has reportedly come up short with the conference’s decision to delay the decision that the health risks related to the COVID-19 pandemic were too much to overcome. We will have more on this story as it develops.
