ACC women’s basketball leaders through Nov. 27

Guess which Notre Dame player is on this list.

With the Thanksgiving tournaments in the rear-view mirror, it’s time for the ACC-Big Ten Challenge and the beginning of ACC play. Of course, we only will be getting a small taste of conference action. That will begin in earnest right before New Year’s Eve. In the meantime, here’s who’s been handling nonconference opponents the best so far:

Every 2022 ACC/Big Ten challenge matchup

A look at the 2022 ACC/Big Ten challenge:

The Big Ten and the ACC will go head to head this November for the Commissioner’s Cup.

Earlier today, the conferences announced each matchup in a challenge that’s headlined by 13 squads that participated in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Going by ESPN’s Way-Too-Early Top 25, there are six ranked teams currently part of the challenge.

The games will take place during the final week of November, with all games available on the ESPN family of networks.

The Big Ten is coming off of an 8-6 win in the 2021 challenge, and the Badgers were able to defeat Georgia Tech on the road to help the conference last season.

Here is a complete look at the 2022 matchups:

Notre Dame makes NCAA Tournament, will play Rutgers in First Four

The Irish are dancing!

After a championship week that went anything but smoothly for Notre Dame, all of South Bend can take a collective exhale. For the first time since 2017, the Irish have qualified for the NCAA Tournament after being placed in the West Regional. They will take on Rutgers in a battle of No. 11 seeds as part of the First Four in Dayton, Ohio. The winner of this game will play sixth-seeded Alabama in the first round.

The Irish have an all-time record of 20-13 against the Scarlet Knights. The former Big East rivals last faced each other in the second round of the 2013 conference tournament. The Irish won that game, 69-61. In fact, nine of the past 11 meetings have gone their way.

It was fitting that these programs met in the 2013 Big East Tournament because both programs left that conference after that season. Now, they get to face each other in an unofficial ACC-Big Ten Challenge with much bigger stakes than conference pride. Getting into the Round of 64 by playing an extra game may not have been a goal either program wanted to achieve, but that’s just how it goes sometimes. Still, they likely will be thinking less about that than being one of 68 teams who still can win it all.

Notre Dame slips to .500 with Big Ten/ACC Challenge loss at Illinois

Yes, there was a basketball game going on while a major football story was breaking.

Notre Dame picked up two wins in its first two home games of the season. It then lost two of three at the Maui Invitational. Now, it’s wondering where this season might be headed after dropping its Big Ten/ACC Challenge contest to Illinois, 82-72. All of this is happening just ahead of visiting a Boston College team that’s undefeated at home, which will be followed by hosting one of the country’s top programs in Kentucky.

The Irish (3-3) hung around for most of the first half before the Illini (5-2) went on a 10-2 run to extend their lead to 11. Though the Irish were able to cut that lead to seven by halftime, the Illini proved to be the better team during the second half. To the Irish’s credit, they brought a 15-point deficit down to five with just over three minutes left. However, that was as good as it got as the Illini made all the free throws they needed to put the game away.

All-American Kofi Cockburn lived up to his billing by leading all scorers with 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field. Not far behind was Alfonso Plummer, who scored 21 and made all eight of his free throws.

South Bend native and freshman Blake Wesley continues to impress as he set a new scoring high for his young career with 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting off the bench. Dane Goodwin scored 15 points, and Nate Laszewski added 13.

Oh yeah, and something happened with the football team right before this game tipped off. The Illini fans decided to let the Irish know in case they were unaware:

The Spartans’ battle with Louisville as part of the Big Ten-ACC Challenge didn’t crack the list, but their road trip to Hinkle Fieldhouse to play Butler did.

Wisconsin’s opponent announced for the 2021 Big Ten/ACC Challenge

Wisconsin has their Big Ten/ACC Challenge opponent for the 2021-22 season

Nothing marks the true dog days of summer like CBSSports’ Jon Rothstein releasing the matchups for the upcoming Big Ten/ACC Challenge all in separate Tweets.

For the Wisconsin basketball program, scheduling and recruiting news is a welcome sight at this point after last week’s fallout from the locker room audio leak.

That’s what we get today in the form of schedule news as Rothstein reported that the Badgers will travel to Atlanta, Georgia and take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets as a part of this year’s Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Wisconsin was triumphant in last year’s crossover event, blowing out Louisville 85-48 at the Kohl Center.

Georgia Tech is coming off a 17-9 2020-21 campaign which included a first-round NCAA Tournament exit at the hands of Loyola Chicago.

The game will take place December 1 at Georgia Tech’s McCamish Pavilion.

Potter has averaged 12.8 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists a game this season, including an outstanding 54.3 average field goal percentage on the season. Wisconsin will look to keep rolling against the Cardinals.

The initial matchup between the teams on Dec. 9 was postponed because of positive cases for COVID-19 on the Cardinals. The Louisville outbreak forced them to cancel their matchup against UNC-Greensboro, and an outbreak on North Carolina State forced the matchup against the Cardinals to be postponed.

Despite their struggles with COVID-19, the Louisville Cardinals are 4-0 so far this season including a close win against Seton Hall. They are led by guard Carlik Jones, who is averaging 17.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 5.3 assists a game this season. Louisville will be an important early-season test for the Badgers before they enter their Big Ten schedule next week.

Notre Dame Basketball: Robby Carmody Update

Although not surprising, the still unfortunate word on the rest of his 2019-20 season came this morning in a release from the Notre Dame Athletic Communications Department:

With under a minute to go last night in their loss at No. 3 Maryland, Notre Dame guard Robby Carmody suffered what looked to be a brutal knee injury.

Although not surprising, the still unfortunate word on the rest of his 2019-20 season came this morning in a release from the Notre Dame Athletic Communications Department:

Sophomore guard Robby Carmody has suffered a left ACL injury – confirmed by an MRI conducted this morning – and will miss the remainder of the 2019-20 season.

Carmody had played in seven of Notre Dame’s eight games to date and was averaging 5.4 points and 1.6 rebounds per contest in this, his sophomore season.

Notre Dame returns to the court Saturday as they host 4-5 Boston College.
