Oregon at Oregon State: Instant reactions as Ducks rally past Beavers

Nate Bittle and Jackson Shelstad led the second half rally to propel the Ducks past the Beavers 78-75 in Corvallis.

It took a couple of Oregon natives to dispatch the Beavers on this Thursday night in Corvallis.

Nate Bittle led all scorers with 23 points and 14 rebounds and Jackson Shelstad added 15 points as Oregon went up to OSU and captured a 78-75 non-conference win to go to 5-0 on the season.

If the Ducks were honest with themselves, they would have to say the Beavers outplayed them for most of the contest. Bittle was the catalyst for a 20-5 second half run that gave the Ducks their first lead after halftime with less than three minutes to go. Shelstad also hit a trio of threes and a leaping leaner from the baseline with 29 seconds left for the 76-73 lead.

Jadrian Tracey hit a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left to ice the game.

Oregon vs. Oregon State Keys to the Game

  • The Beavers killed the Ducks on the boards in the first half to the tune of a 20-13 advantage.
  • Points in the paint were going the Beavers’ way also in the early going. They had a 28-16 lead inside the key at halftime.
  • Partly because they were down and partly because the Ducks needed to speed the game up, Oregon started to press in the backcourt and it worked somewhat in the first half.
  • Everything changed after halftime. Oregon ran the offense through Bittle and he came up big with 17 points and 11 rebounds in the second half alone.
  • Oregon also ratched up the defense effort, allowing the Beavers just 28 points after the break.
  • The Ducks also shut down Oregon State’s Micheal Rataj in the second half. He had 15 points at halftime and finished with 20 for the night.

Oregon vs. Oregon State Players of the Game

  • Nate Bittle: 23 points, 14 rebounds
  • Jackson Shelstad: 15 points, 6 assists
  • Keeshawn Barthelemy: 10 points
  • Jadrian Tracey: 10 poitns, 4 assists
  • Michael Rataj (OSU): 20 points

Oregon vs. Oregon State Notable Stats

  • Oregon: 30-of-61 FG (49 percent), OSU 25-of-62 FG (40 percent)
  • Points in the paint: Oregon 34, OSU 30
  • Assists: Oregon 21, OSU 12

What’s Next for Oregon Ducks

  • Nov. 26 — vs. Texas A&M Aggies (Las Vegas, Player’s Era Festival)
  • Nov. 27 — vs. San Diego State (Las Vegas, Player’s Era Festival)
  • Nov. 28 — TBD (Las Vegas, Player’s Era Festival)
  • Dec. 5 — at USC
  • Dec. 8 — UCLA

Oregon will now get a nice break before heading down to Las Vegas to open the Player’s Era Festival with Texas A&M. It will be a good test for the Ducks as Big Ten play is right around the corner, a road game at USC Dec. 8.

UCLA’s DeShaun Foster reveals senior lineman out for season

The Bruins will be without one of their veteran tackles for the remainder of the college football season.

The UCLA Bruins have struggled along the offensive line in their first season in the Big Ten. This week, head coach DeShaun Foster delivered some difficult news.

According to Tracy McDannald, Foster revealed that senior offensive tackle Jaylan Jeffers is out for the season. Injured against the Washington Huskies, the Oregon transfer will not finish out the season for the Bruins.

Jeffers’ injury comes at a time when the Bruins are fighting to get to a .500 record by the end of the season, with rival USC coming to town.

The impact of Jeffers’ injury is yet to be seen, but given UCLA’s offensive line woes, expect a significant drop off in production with the veteran tackle sidelined.

Thankfully for the Bruins, the Trojans’ pass rush has been nearly non-existent, averaging only 1.4 sacks per game and ranked 113th in college football. That said, the Bruins will need to get the quick-pass game going in order to hide their deficiency at tackle this Saturday.

Wisconsin Badgers vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers: Series history, all-time record

Wisconsin Badgers vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers: Series history, all-time record

The Wisconsin Badgers (5-5, 3-4 Big Ten) will travel to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers (5-5, 2-5 Big Ten) at Memorial Stadium on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET, 2:30 p.m. CT. It will be the 18th all-time meeting between the two programs.

The Badgers own a 13-4 overall advantage. They’ve won the last 10 matchups dating back to 2012 — that streak began with Wisconsin defeating Nebraska 70-31 in the Big Ten Championship game in December of 2012.

In that contest, the Badgers compiled 529 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on the ground with their three-headed backfield attack. Montee Ball turned 21 carries into 202 yards and three touchdowns, James White had 109 yards and four scores on 15 carries, while Melvin Gordon added nine carries for 216 yards and a touchdown.

Wisconsin fell to No. 1 Oregon 16-13 in Week 12 and they were in a very similar position when they squared off with Nebraska last season, entering the game with a 5-5 overall record. The Badgers knocked off the Cornhuskers in overtime 24-17 at Camp Randall.

Nebraska enters Saturday’s matchup having lost four games in a row after a 5-1 start to the year, dropping their contest against USC 28-20 on the road last weekend.

Although the Badgers have a 13-4 advantage all-time, they are just 4-3 in games against the Cornhuskers on the road, leaving the door open for Nebraska to snap its extensive losing streak.

Oregon vs. Troy: Instant reactions to Ducks win over Trojans

The Ducks improved on almost everything from the previous game and easily handed the Troy Trojans an 82-61 loss Sunday afternoon.

Whatever message head coach Dana Altman gave to his team after the Portland victory and before today’s game with Troy obviously sank in and it was understood.

The Ducks played a lot better as they easily dispatched the Troy Trojans 82-61 inside Matthew Knight Arena Sunday afternoon. Oregon might have used the Oregon football team’s defensive effort as an inspiration because the basketball team played a full 40 minutes of defense. They held the Trojans to just 23 first points and held a 20-point lead throughout the second half. Troy could never muster up a rally to challenge the Ducks.

Oregon is now 4-0 on the season and they will now prepare for a Thursday night affair in Corvallis to face the Beavers for the first road game of the season.

Oregon vs. Troy Keys to the Game

  • The Ducks got defensive in the first half, a nice change from their previous game where it seemed as if everything Portland shot went in the hoop. Troy didn’t have the same luck as the Trojans shot just 26 percent (9-of-35) from the field in the first half.
  • Keeshawn Barthelemy was hot from the field at the end of the previous game and hit sharp shooting continued. He nailed a trio of threes in the first half for 13 points and 15 points for the game to lead the Ducks.
  • Oregon obviously worked on crashing the boards in between games as the Ducks outrebounded Troy 38-31.
  • The Ducks got their first look at Supreme Cook, the Georgetown transfer who will back up Nate Bittle at center. He didn’t disappoint with 11 points and five rebounds in just 13 minutes of action.

Oregon vs. Troy Players of the Game

  • Keeshawn Barthelemy: 15 points
  • TJ Bamba: 13 points, 3 assists
  • Nate Bittle: 12 points, 8 rebounds
  • Supreme Cook: 11 points, 5 rebounds
  • Myles Rigsby (Troy): 15 points

Oregon vs. Troy Notable Stats

  • Oregon: 29-of-56 FG (52 percent), Troy: 25-of-67 FG (37 percent)
  • Oregon: 17-of-19 free throws
  • Turnovers: Oregon 17, Troy 17

What’s Next for Oregon Ducks

  • Nov. 21 — at Oregon State Beavers
  • Nov. 26 — vs. Texas A&M Aggies (Las Vegas, Player’s Era Festival)
  • Nov. 27 — vs. San Diego State (Las Vegas, Player’s Era Festival)
  • Nov. 28 — TBD (Las Vegas, Player’s Era Festival)
  • Dec. 5 — at USC

The schedule is about to get a lot tougher, but first the Ducks have to travel up to Corvallis to play the Beavers. After that, Oregon better be ready as it goes down to Vegas to play two teams, at least, that are likely bound for the NCAA tournament. Then league play gets underway with a quick road trip to face USC.

It certainly wasn’t drawn up this way, but no one can argue with the end result.

The Oregon Ducks football team strolled into Camp Randall Stadium and quickly found themselves in a dogfight with the Wisconsin Badgers. The game was tight throughout, but the Ducks made just enough plays to escape with a 16-13 victory, keeping their perfect season alive.

They’re now 11-0 on the year and are looking forward to a much-needed bye week after playing eight straight games without a break. Oregon doesn’t play until Nov. 30 when Washington comes calling to Autzen Stadium for the regular season finale.

Oregon can also heal up a bit before the playoffs as well. Tez Johnson, Jordan Burch and Marcus Harper II were all out for this Wisconsin matchup. No telling what the extra week of rest will do as there is no guarantee those injuries will heal up in time for Washington, but the bye week can only help those chances.

Oregon holds on to No. 1 ranking in US LBM Coaches Poll after close win on the road

Oregon holds on to its unanimous No. 1 ranking in the US LBM Coaches poll after its close 16-13 win on the road at Wisconsin.

The college football playoff is beginning to take shape and so is the US LBM Coaches poll.

After their 16-13 win at Wisconsin, the Oregon Ducks are still the unanimous No. 1 team in the nation with Ohio State right on their heels at No. 2. The Buckeyes had a bye this week before their huge home game with No. 5 Indiana this week.

No. 3 Texas and No. 4 Penn State rounds up the Top 5.

The big winner this week was No. 8 Georgia, who moved up two spots and will most likely be one of the 12 playoff teams after defeating No. 11 Tennessee 31-17. The Vols dropped seven big spots after being in the Top 5 the previous week.

BYU also dropped seven spots to No. 15 after suffering its first loss of the season to Kansas.

Tulane moved into the rankings at No. 20 with its big season, 8-2 overall. In a few weeks, it will play for the American Conference title.

UNLV and Memphis also get into the poll at Nos. 23 and 24, respectively.

Best photos from Wisconsin’s narrow loss to No. 1 Oregon in Week 12

The Wisconsin Badgers lost to No. 1 Oregon 16-13 on Saturday night at Camp Randall Stadium. The loss marked Wisconsin’s third in a row, as the team is now 5-5 on the season and 3-4 in Big Ten play.

The Badgers looked markedly better on the defensive side of the ball versus the Ducks, limiting the No. 1 team in the country to a season-low 16 total points. That output came thanks to big plays in key moments, starting with Nyzier Fourqurean’s interception off Dillon Gabriel in the first quarter.

Wisconsin entered the halftime break up 10-6, in a strong position to pull the upset win.

The Badgers then got a stop to open the second half before embarking on a nearly nine-minute, 16-play drive that ended with a field goal. It expanded Wisconsin’s lead to 13-6, which remained the score to open the fourth quarter.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Gabriel was able to complete a 15-yard pass to tight end Terrance Ferguson to convert a fourth-and-nine. The Ducks finished off the drive with a touchdown on the ground by running back Jordan James, knotting the game up at 13-13.

Oregon later added a field goal with less than three minutes left in the game and the Badgers weren’t able to answer, falling 16-13.

Wisconsin will now travel to face Nebraska at Lincoln Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 23. In the meantime, here some of the best photos from Wisconsin’s almost historic upset against the Ducks:

Oregon injury update for Week 12 game vs Wisconsin

The full Oregon injury update for the Week 12 game at the Wisconsin Badgers.

Considering it’s Week 12 of the college football season, Oregon’s injury report is very manageable and it shouldn’t affect the outcome of the game against Wisconsin one way or another.

Gary Bryant, Jr. and Dave Iuli are finally completely off the report, which is great news, but they’ve been replaced with Jordan Burch and Jordan James. But it looks like those two will be available to play on Saturday for the Ducks. They appear on the report because they’re a little banged up.

There’s also some encouraging news on Tez Johnson as well. It seems as if he’s healing quicker than most.

Here’s the complete report.

Oregon injury report

  • Tez Johnson — Shoulder — Out
  • Marcus Harper — Knee — Questionable
  • Matthew Bedford — Knee — Out
  • Jordan Burch — Ankle — Questionable
  • Jordan James — Unspecified — Questionable
  • Jahlil Florence — Leg — Out
  • Kyler Kasper — Leg — Out
  • Jack Ressler — Unspecified — Out
  • Fox Crader — Unspecified — Out
  • My’Keil Gardner — Foot — Doubtful
  • Dakoda Fields — Knee — Out

Tez Johnson injury update

Johnson was injured during the Michigan game on the first drive and he missed the majority of that game as well as the contest with Maryland. But the sling that he was wearing came off and although he’s out vs. Wisconsin, Oregon does have a bye week next. That would give Johnson almost four weeks to heal and it’s becoming more promising that he’ll be available on Senior Day against the Huskies Nov. 30.

Marcus Harper II injury update

Offensive lineman Marcus Harper II went down in the second half of the Michigan game holding his knee. He walked off the field, but he wasn’t able to return. Harper missed the Maryland contest, but it looks as if the minor tweak to his knee has mostly healed and he should be available on Saturday in Wisconsin injury update

Jordan James injury update

James just had seven carries for 29 yards, but he score an early touchdown. While his unspecified injury doesn’t seem to be serious, he’s still listed as questionable. Should James miss this week, the Ducks will go to Noah Whittington and Jaden Limar and not miss a beat.

Wisconsin Badgers vs. Oregon Ducks: Series history, all-time record

Wisconsin Badgers vs. Oregon Ducks: Series history, all-time record

The Wisconsin Badgers (5-4, 3-3 Big Ten) will host the No. 1 Oregon Ducks (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten) at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET, 6:30 p.m. CT. It will be the seventh all-time meeting between the two programs.

The Badgers and Ducks have split their six prior matchups, but Oregon comes in on a three-game win streak, including Rose Bowl wins in 2011 and 2019.

The Ducks defeated Wisconsin 28-27 in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 2020 with quarterback Justin Herbert leading the Ducks to a game-winning drive with less than eight minutes left while trailing 27-21.

In the contest, Herbert was limited to 14 completions on 20 pass attempts for 138 yards and an interception, but he did score three times on the ground, churning out 29 rushing yards in the game.

Over on the Badgers’ side of things, quarterback Jack Coan completed 23 of 25 passes for 186 yards and a touchdown, also throwing an interception in the contest. Wide receiver Quintez Cephus was on the receiving end of the touchdown, finishing his day with 59 yards and the score on seven receptions.

Oregon enters Saturday’s matchup after a 39-18 win over Maryland in Week 11, reaching the 30-point threshold for the ninth game in a row. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel had 183 passing yards and three touchdowns in the win.

Wisconsin was idle in Week 11 after getting crushed by Iowa 42-10 on the road in Week 10, losing their second game in a row. Luke Fickell and his squad have a tough task ahead of them against the top team in the country for their first meeting as Big Ten foes Saturday.
