UFC on ESPN+ 40: Thiago Santos vs. Glover Teixeira odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 40 fight between Thiago Santos vs. Glover Teixeira, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and predictions.

In a light heavyweight bout in the five-round main event, Thiago Santos and Glover Teixeira meet at UFC on ESPN+ 40 Saturday at the UFC’s APEX facility in Las Vegas. The early prelims kick off at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+, followed by the main card set for 10 p.m. ET, also on ESPN+.

Santos (21-7) steps into the octagon with a 4.44 to 3.74 significant strikes landed per minute advantage over his counterpart. He’ll be champing at the bit to get back into the octagon after a split-decision loss for the light heavyweight strap at UFC 239 against Jon “Bones” Jones on July 6, 2019. It was a costly loss, too, as he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, as well as damage to the meniscus. The 16-month recovery and hiatus are the longest of his career, so we’ll see if rust is a factor.

Teixeira (31-7) heads into this one looking to tie Ryan Bader for second in wins in the light heavyweight division with 15. The veteran also enters this bout tied with Ovince Saint Preux for the most finishes in the division with 11, including six KO/TKO wins. Plus, he is tied with four others for the most submission victories with five. Teixeira has also recorded 23 takedowns landed, which shows his tremendous versatility and ability to finish in a multitude of ways. He enters on a four-fight winning streak, including a KO/TKO in the main event over Anthony Smith on May 13 in Jacksonville. Three of his past four fights have finished inside the distance, a sign that the 41-year-old veteran isn’t even close to being finished.

TEIXEIRA (+200) is worth a small-unit wager with a chance to double up. Santos (-250) could be quite rusty after a lengthy absence and rehab following a career-threatening injury. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Santos rather tentative in the early going, and Teixeira heads into the octagon on quite the roll.

However, do not look for this fight to be a short one. Santos will likely be tentative, as mentioned, and cautious as he gets his sea legs back. Go OVER 1.5 ROUNDS (-152) for a slam-dunk total number of rounds wager, and playing OVER 2.5 ROUNDS (+125) is a decent small-unit play, too, at plus-money.

On the 5-way line, TEIXEIRA BY KO/TKO, DQ or SUBMISSION (+350) is a strong value play with the chance to return three and a half times your initial stake.

UFC on ESPN+ 40: Andrei Arlovski vs. Tanner Boser odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 40 fight between Andrei Arlovski vs. Tanner Boser, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and predictions.

In a heavyweight bout on the main card, Andrei Arlovski and Tanner Boser meet at UFC on ESPN+ 40 Saturday at the UFC’s APEX facility in Las Vegas. The early prelims kick off at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+, followed by the main card set for 10 p.m. ET, also on ESPN+.

Arlovski (29-19) steps into the octagon with a two-inch reach advantage over his Canadian counterpart, but he is behind in significant strikes landed per minute at 4.54 to 3.54, and also behind 54.30 to 44.40 in significant strikes-accuracy percentage. Arlovski likes to take it to the mat, posting a 36.67 takedown accuracy, although the veteran hasn’t recorded a submission victory since Feb. 5, 2005. So, when you look to specific method of victory, you can avoid submission. He is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Philipe Lins last time out May 13 in Jacksonville. However, he hasn’t won consecutive victories since back-to-back wins over Stefan Struve (March 3, 2018) and Junior Albini (Nov. 11, 2017).

Boser (19-6-1) has posted consecutive KO/TKO victories over Lins and Raphael Pessoa, and he is 3-1 in the past four since arriving at the UFC level. “The Bulldozer” is known for his punching power, especially his devastating left hook, which caught Pessoa in the second round on July 25 last time out. Boser has really improved his striking lately, and that combination with lower-body kicks is a dangerous recipe. Arlovski has faced plenty of brawlers who want to out-brawl the 41-year-old. Boser is patient, and versatile, and should be able to put Arlovski down before heading to the judges for a decision.

Andrei Arlovski vs. Tanner Boser: Betting odds, predictions and picks

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 5:36 a.m. ET.

Boser (-334) is an overwhelming favorite against the Belarussian, but you can’t take him on the 2-way line and post more than three times your potential return. Instead, look to the 5-way line for method of victory. BOSER BY KO/TKO, DQ or SUBMISSION (+160) is a surprisingly profitable return. In addition, roll with NO (-106): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? for a winning combination.

For a little extra value, look to UNDER 2.5 ROUNDS (+115). Boser hasn’t had a submission win since 2014, and Arlovski hasn’t had one since 2005, so avoid Submission (+1100) for the fight finish, as tempting as that looks. Instead, take KO/TKO/DQ (+105) for the method of win. That’s a safe play if you’re not feeling either Arlovski or Boser, but want a little action with minimal risk.

UFC on ESPN+ 40: Raoni Barcelos vs. Khalid Taha odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 40 fight between Raoni Barcelos vs. Khalid Taha, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and predictions.

In a bantamweight bout on the main card, Raoni Barcelos and Khalid Taha meet at UFC on ESPN+ 40 Saturday at the UFC’s APEX facility in Las Vegas. The early prelims kick off at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+, followed by the main card set for 10 p.m. ET, also on ESPN+.

Barcelos (15-1) steps in on short notice for Jack Shore, who encountered visa issues. The Brazilian fighter enters this bout with a perfect 3-0 record since arriving at the UFC level. He has a submission win in the second round over Chris Gutierrez at the TUF 28 Finale on Nov. 30, 2018. He has shown tremendous versatility over his past few outings, recording wins by way of unanimous decision, while also winning by way of KO/TKO and submission, too. That ability to win fights in a variety of ways makes him an attractive wagering target.

Taha (13-2) has had mixed results at the UFC level so far, losing his debut against Nad Narimani before bouncing back with a 25-second KO/TKO in Round 1 against Boston Salmon at UFC 236. Taha’s last outing was a no contest against Bruno Silva at UFC 243 on Oct. 5, 2019. He was originally awarded a win, but it was later changed due to a failed USADA drug test. He was subsequently suspended for one year as a result of the violation, so we’ll see if there is any rust.

Raoni Barcelos vs. Khalid Taha: Betting odds, predictions and picks

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 5:08 a.m. ET.

Barcelos (-400) will cost you four times your potential return on the 2-way line, and that’s just too risky, even against a fighter returning from a lengthy absence. AVOID, and look to more specific wagers.

Perhaps the best bet on this fight is NO (-152): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? as Barcelos has finished inside the distance in two of his three fights at the UFC level, and four of his past five pro fights overall. As far as Taha is concerned, he has finished inside the distance in 12 of his 15 career fights as a pro, including a perfect 9-0 record via TKO/KO and 2-1 by way of submission. As such, I like UNDER 2.5 ROUNDS (-115). And if you want to get really specific, target BARCELOS IN ROUND 2 (+450) and BARCELOS IN ROUND 3 (+800) for the win. Sure, you will lose one end of that ticket, but you’ll still be well ahead if the bout ends in one of those specific rounds.

UFC on ESPN+ 40: Claudia Gadelha vs. Yan Xiaonan odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 40 fight between Claudia Gadelha vs. Yan Xiaonan, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and predictions.

In a women’s strawweight bout on the main card, Claudia Gadelha and Yan Xiaonan meet at UFC on ESPN+ 40 Saturday at the UFC’s APEX facility in Las Vegas. The early prelims kick off at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+, followed by the main card set for 10 p.m. ET, also on ESPN+.

Gadelha (18-4) steps into the octagon, and she will face a punching machine. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert has posted 3.40 significant strikes landed per minute to 6.72 for her counterpart. The veteran Gadelha will be looking to get this fight to the canvas early, as she holds 3.13 to 1.20 takedown-average advantage, and she has a submission win over Karolina Kowalkiewicz among her 11 fights at the UFC level. However, her other 10 bouts have each gone the distance, so more often than not she tries to wow the judges with her technical ability.

Xiaonan (12-1) has posted a perfect 5-0 record at the UFC level, with all five of those battles coming via unanimous decision. That includes common opponent Kowalkiewicz, whom she pushed past on Feb. 22 on the Felder-Hooker fight night card last time out. The striker has posted a 12-1 record across 13 career professional fights, including five wins via TKO/KO. One thing to watch, her only loss as a pro came against Karina Hallinan at MC: Martial Combat 10 on Sept. 16, 2010. Yes, that’s quite a while ago and she has grown as a fighter in a decade, but that’s an area Gadelha will still look to have the advantage.

Claudia Gadelha vs. Yan Xiaonan: Betting odds, predictions and picks

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Friday at 10 p.m. ET.

XIAONAN (-167) is the favorite in this one over the veteran Gadelha (+140) on the 2-way line, and the Chinese-born striker is a good play. She is a perfect 5-for-5 since arriving at the UFC level, and she’ll be looking to impress the judges more than her Brazilian counterpart.

Both fighters rarely, if ever, finish inside the distance. While voting YES (-250): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is a little pricey, it’s the good call. In addition, play XIAONAN ON POINTS (+110) at plus-money at a cheaper price with less risk. However, if she were to win inside the distance, via doctor’s stoppage, or any other way, you would be holding a losing ticket. As such, the 2-way line is a better play with more paths to victory.

UFC on ESPN+ 40: Ian Heinisch vs. Brendan Allen odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 40 fight between Ian Heinisch vs. Brendan Allen, with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and predictions.

In a middleweight bout on the main card, Ian Heinisch and Brendan Allen meet at UFC on ESPN+ 40 Saturday at the UFC’s APEX facility in Las Vegas. The early prelims kick off at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+, followed by the main card set for 10 p.m. ET, also on ESPN+.

Heinisch (14-3) heads into this one as a slight underdog, and physically he is also at a slight disadvantage. He enters the octagon three inches shorter and with a three-inch reach disadvantage against his counterpart. He does own a 3.62 to 2.67 advantage in significant strikes landed per minute over his career, and he can hold his own on takedowns, although Allen (15-3) is much more accurate with a 37.50 to 19.23 takedown-accuracy percentage. Heinisch snapped a two-bout losing skid with a first-round knockout of Gerald Meerschaert at UFC 250 last time out on June 6 at this very same venue.

Allen, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist, has posted a 3-0 record since arriving at the UFC level, while posting a seven-bout win streak overall since last tasting defeat at LFA 32 against Anthony Hernandez in a title bout in that division on Jan. 26, 2018. More importantly for this bout, at the UFC level, he has shown a variety of ways he can win. He has a submission win over Kevin Holland, a KO/TKO in the first round against Tom Breese, as well as a UD win over Kyle Daukaus in his most recent showing June 27 on the Poirier-Hooker fight card.

ALLEN (-115) is worth a look on the 2-way line in this bout, which is essentially a coin-flip fight. However, Allen’s versatility, or ability to win in a variety of ways, makes him quite a bit more attractive. Plus, he enters with a reach advantage or ability to keep his counterpart, literally, at arm’s length.

If you want a little more value, target Allen by KO/TKO, DQ or SUBMISSION (+290) for a small-unit wager on the 5-way line. Note, if he ends up winning on points, you don’t get to cash a winner. But he has shown he can win on the mat with his wrestling ability, or with a knockout blow.

It’s a bit against the trends, but I am also feeling UNDER 2.5 ROUNDS (+165), as that’s just too tempting to pass up at plus-money. If you’re not feeling a particular winner but want to have a reason to peek this fight, go with KO/TKO/DQ (+300) for the fight finish for a potential triple up.
