Panthers RB coach Bernie Parmalee shares early impressions of Jonathon Brooks

Panthers RB coach Bernie Parmalee on Jonathon Brooks: “Oh shoot, he’s what you want in a back.”

Although they may be bonded by their own unfortunate experiences, Carolina Panthers running back coach Bernie Parmalee and rookie Jonathon Brooks have made an early connection.

Parmalee spoke about the team’s second-round pick after Tuesday’s outing of team organized activities. He was asked what he saw from Brooks out of college as well as what he’s currently seeing during his transition into the pros.

“Oh shoot, he’s what you want in a back,” Parmalee replied. “I mean, he’s got good size, vision, playmaker, can do it all, position flexibility, plays hard. And when the ball’s in his hand, he makes things happen. So that’s all you ever want for guys in your position.”

Brooks’ move into the NFL isn’t exactly a normal one, as the 20-year-old remains sidelined from practices as he continues to heal from an ACL tear. But that’s a familiar obstacle for Parmalee, who also tore his ACL back in his playing days.

“We bonded that way because I had the right knee, he had the right knee,” he said. “So, I know what you’re thinking. And some of the things by my experience, I say, ‘Don’t think it. Don’t do it.’

“I know what you’re thinking about, but you gotta stay focused—because it’s still a process. As much as our mind says I wanna get out there, your body’s gonna tell you when you can get out there.”

Brooks has previously stated he expects to be out there by training camp.

Who’s out and who’s in for the Panthers’ 2024 coaching staff

Now that the Panthers’ 2024 coaching staff is in place, let’s survey the damage.

The Carolina Panthers put the bow on their new coaching staff this afternoon.

As announced on Thursday, the team has hired five new coaches and retained 13 more. Per the official release, the moves have now rounded out the sideline staff for the upcoming season.

So, what did the turnover ultimately look like in the end?

Here are the coaching positions that underwent a change for Carolina going into 2024:

Who’s out and who’s in for the Panthers’ reconstructed coaching staff? Keep it here for the latest.

The turnover has begun.

Less than a week after the Carolina Panthers named Dave Canales their new head coach, the organization started up the reconstruction of their staff. The opening additions came on Tuesday—with the hirings of a handful of offensive assistants.

So, before we all get lost in the shuffle, keep it here as we track who’s in (and who’s out) from the Carolina sideline.

Panthers part ways with passing game coordinator Parks Frazier

Parks Frazier is the latest member of the 2023 staff to part ways with the Panthers.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic into 800 South Mint Street tonight.

On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers announced the additions of four offensive assistants. Coming in as part of new head coach Dave Canales’ staff will be assistant head coach/run game coordinator Harold Goodwin, running backs coach Bernie Parmalee, wide receivers coach Rob Moore and offensive line coach Joe Gilbert.

But, as subsequently reported by Darin Gantt just moments later, passing game coordinator Parks Frazier has been informed that he will no longer continue with the organization.

Frazier began his NFL coaching career in 2018, as an assistant to then-Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich. He’d go on to serve as an offensive quality control coach, assistant quarterbacks coach and—when Reich was fired in the middle of the 2022 season—the interim offensive coordinator.

Reich then brought Frazier over when he was hired as head coach of the Panthers last offseason. The 32-year-old, once again, stayed on to finish out the year despite Reich’s dismissal at the end of Week 12.

Panthers hire Bernie Parmalee as RB coach

Bernie Parmalee is coming over to coach the running backs in Carolina.

Not all of Dave Canales’ assistants are coming over from Tampa Bay.

As announced by the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday night, Bernie Parmalee has been hired as the team’s new running backs coach. The Jersey City, N.J. native is fresh off a three-year run in the same role for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Parmalee’s NFL coaching career began in 2002, as a tight ends and special teams coach for the Miami Dolphins. The former Dolphins and New York Jets running back stayed in those positions for three seasons until hitting the college ranks at the University of Notre Dame for the succeeding five years.

He jumped back up to the NFL as a tight ends coach for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2010 to 2012. Parmalee then transitioned into a running backs coach for the then-Oakland Raiders from 2015 to 2017 and the Atlanta Falcons beginning in 2018.

His stay in Atlanta lasted for four campaigns, and included additional stints as an offensive assistant, an assistant special teams coach the special teams coordinator.
