Bengals roster moves reveal strange plan to help injured OT spot

The Bengals make a roster move…but not the one fans might’ve expected.

In the wake of the Orlando Brown Jr. injury, Cincinnati Bengals fans could have been forgiven for thinking the team would make a notable move to reinforce the offensive tackle spot in front of Joe Burrow.

But when it came time to make a roster move, the Bengals merely signed Andrew Coker to the practice squad, waiving defensive tackle Domenique Davis to make room.

Coker, a rookie out of TCU, gives the Bengals some collegiate experience as depth, considering he was a four-year starter.

But this isn’t about Coker. It’s about the team essentially entrusting Cody Ford to start if Brown can’t play and a new arrival like Andrew Stueber to properly back up rookie Amarius Mims.

This is a pretty big risk to take in front of Burrow, considering Brown projects to be questionable this week at best and the biggest concern about Mims in college was his actual availability. The team already lost Trent Brown for the season on the right side.

One would think after effectively losing two offensive tackles this year already, the Bengals might pluck a guy off another team’s practice squad to their own 53-man roster or sign a veteran free agent.

Instead, like when injuries hit corner and the defensive trenches, the Bengals are going to play the waiting game and hope what they have is good enough.

Bengals make roster moves before Week 7 vs. Browns

Bengals roster moves before the Week 7 showdown with the Browns.

The Cincinnati Bengals made some minor housekeeping roster moves ahead of the Week 7 encounter with the Cleveland Browns.

There, the Bengals activated cornerback DJ Ivey from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, completing his return from last year’s season-ending injury.

Before the road game in Cleveland, the Bengals also elevated Trey Hill from the practice squad to the active roster.

Ivey’s impending return was one of the reasons the Bengals weren’t likely to add outside help via free agency or trades in the wake of Dax Hill’s season-ending injury. The Cam Taylor-Britt-DJ Turner-Mike Hilton trio will still start at corner.

Hill is extra, versatile depth, especially if someone like Cody Ford needs to take over at a tackle spot. He’ll revert to the practice squad the Monday after the game.

Bengals lose yet another practice squad player, this time to Lions

The Bengals just lost a player to the Detroit Lions.

The Cincinnati Bengals just keep losing pass-rushers off the practice squad this month.

Tuesday was the latest example, with the Detroit Lions claiming defensive end Isaiah Thomas off the Bengals’ practice squad to help ease the loss of injured superstar Aidan Hutchinson, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

The Bengals had originally claimed Thomas, a seventh-rounder in 2022 by the Browns, at the start of September.

Earlier this month, the Bengals lost K.J. Henry off the practice squad as the Dallas Cowboys signed him to their 53-man roster on a two-year deal to help replace injured names.

Cincinnati is finally getting healthier on the edge with former first-rounder Myles Murphy off injured reserve. But the team’s depth beyond the active roster just keeps taking hits, so expect the Bengals to make another move soon.

Bengals make roster moves with injured defensive players

The Bengals make important roster moves — providing good news in the process.

Help is on the way for the battered Cincinnati Bengals defensive line.

During the prep work for Week 5 against the Baltimore Ravens, the team announced that Myles Murphy and McKinnley Jackson will return to practice, with the latter designated to return from the Reserve/Injured list.

Murphy, the former first-round pick, was already designated to return back in August.

This news means the 21-day window to return has been opened for both players. Over that three-week span, the players won’t count against the 53-man roster.

The Bengals could desperately use the help. The rookie Jackson could help fellow breakout rookie Kris Jenkins Jr. on the interior with Sheldon Rankins and B.J. Hill still hurt.

And Murphy is a critical piece on the edge with Trey Hendrickson injured and Sam Hubbard battling a season-long injury.

Bengals’ practice squad player stolen by Cowboys, earns 2-year deal

The Bengals lose some key depth thanks to the Cowboys.

Already hurting at defensive end, the Cincinnati Bengals lost an edge rusher off the practice squad early this week thanks to the Dallas Cowboys.

Those Cowboys signed K.J. Henry off Cincinnati’s practice squad, going as far as giving him a two-year deal to join the 53-man roster, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

The Bengals added Henry off the waiver wire in late August and Henry was depth they could have called up to the active roster as needed.

Depth is an issue, too, with Trey Hendrickson injured and Myles Murphy still on injured reserve. Starter Sam Hubbard recently revealed that he’s playing through an injury that could linger all season, too.

Bengals make roster moves after win over Panthers

The Bengals get to work on the roster after picking up their first win of the season.

The Cincinnati Bengals announced a roster move on the Monday after the Week 4 win over the Carolina Panthers, which brought the team’s record to 1-3.

Cincinnati returned punter Brad Robbins to the active roster from the reserve/injured list.

Robbins might have entered the season as the starter had he been healthy. But the job instead went to rookie Ryan Rehkow, who set a record during his debut and has since performed at a high level.

Considering Rehkow’s performance was one of our top takeaways from the win the Panthers, it should be interesting to see what the Bengals do at the position now.

The Bengals had an extra roster spot available after sending Trent Brown to injured reserve. They could elect to keep the competition going, but could also have names like Myles Murphy on the way back from IR and needing roster spots, too.

Bengals make roster moves after signing Lawrence Guy

More roster moves for the Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals needed to make a handful of minor roster moves to fit new free-agent addition Lawrence Guy.

Tuesday, the team made the signing of Guy official and, to make room for him on the 53-man roster, waived defensive end KJ Henry.

The Bengals had claimed Henry on waivers in late August as depth on the end in response to injuries there, such as Myles Murphy going to injured reserve.

Cincinnati also announced the release of wideout Shedrick Jackson from the practice squad, presumably to later make room for Henry there.

The fact the Bengals felt it necessary to fit Guy right onto the main roster instead of slipping him onto the practice squad speaks to the problems in the trenches.

Both B.J. Hill and Sheldon Rankins suffered injuries in Week 2 and are out for an unknown amount of time, while rookies McKinnley Jackson and Kris Jenkins Jr. are out with injuries, too. Jackson is on injured reserve, while there is no solid return date for Jenkins.

Bengals sign veteran free agent after wave of injuries

The Bengals add a free agent to the roster before Week 3.

The Cincinnati Bengals signed free agent defensive lineman Lawrence Guy on Tuesday while seeking help on the interior after a rash of injuries.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the news.

Guy, 34, is a former Super Bowl champion and immediate depth who can come in and help the rotation alongside Jay Tufele and Zach Carter. He’s started 122 games since 2012 with 500-plus tackles.

At the time of Guy’s signing, it’s unknown whether the team will have both B.J. Hill and Sheldon Rankins back for Week 3 after the starters left the loss to Kansas City with hamstring injuries.

The Bengals had initially planned for rookies McKinnley Jackson and Kris Jenkins Jr. to play big depth roles, but the former is on injured reserve and the latter is healing after a minor hand operation.

Bengals make roster move as another Ja’Marr Chase report arrives

The Bengals make roster moves ahead of Week 1 and a report updates the Ja’Marr Chase situation.

With uncertainty at the wide receiver position ahead of Week 1, the Cincinnati Bengals made a minor roster move on Saturday.

Another Ja’Marr Chase report went live not long after, too.

The Bengals elevated wide receiver Kendric Pryor to the active roster from the practice squad for the game against the New England Patriots. It is a response to the Chase contract standoff and Tee Higgins’ sudden hamstring setback that will likely cause him to miss the game.

As for Chase, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Bengals still anticipate Chase playing in the game — but that they can change the game plan if he doesn’t, according to ESPN’s Ben Baby.

A safe report, but better than nothing. Chase told reporters on Friday during a winding interview that he would be open to playing without a contract extension, though he suggested it could be on a reduced snap count.

Some Chase would be better than no Chase for Joe Burrow’s offense while this contract drama unfolds. But the elevation of Pryor could mean hyped rookie Jermaine Burton still won’t see the field due to his issues over the summer, especially with big tight ends like Mike Gesicki able to take snaps in the slot.

Bengals fans should be hyped about undrafted weapon joining practice squad

The Bengals offense just got more explosive.

The Cincinnati Bengals raised some eyebrows with recent roster moves at running back, keeping just three on the initial 53-man roster, then cutting Trayveon Williams, only to bring him back later amid a flurry of moves.

But a certain practice squad running back should have the attention of fans, now.

Amid that mentioned flurry of roster moves, the Bengals added former Georgia running back Kendall Milton.

Milton went undrafted to Philadelphia, then routed to Cincinnati after rushing for 1,800-plus yards and 23 scores while averaging better than six yards per carry with the Bulldogs.

While he’s not going to crack the top two of the rotation headlined by Zack Moss and Chase Brown, nor is he likely to get special teams looks over Williams so soon, Milton is an incredibly intriguing long-term fit in Cincinnati.

Now out of the Joe Mixon era, the Bengals will have a long-term eye on the position. Brown could be one major part of that, but Moss is already 27 years old and only under contract through 2025.

If Milton can join the Bengals program in the right ways in the coming weeks and months, he’ll give the staff something to think about long-term.

Of course, the highlights he showed in college help explain why the Bengals went after him after final cuts in the first place:
