LB on Clemson’s radar talks Swinney Camp experience

One talented linebacker prospect who traveled to Clemson to participate in the second day of the Dabo Swinney Camp on June 2, was Ben Cutter — a 6-foot-1, 215-pound three-star rising senior out of Denver’s (N.C.) East Lincoln High School.

“It was good,” Cutter told The Clemson Insider regarding his camp experience. “I did pretty good on the field work stuff. I could’ve done better on the 1-on-1s, but that’s not something we practice a ton at our school, so that’s something I need to work on. Overall, I did pretty good on the field.”

What type of feedback did Cutter get from Wesley Goodwin?

“He said that he’s got a couple of people ahead of me right now as far as offers go,” Cutter said of Clemson’s defensive coordinator/linebackers coach. “But, he said if something falls through or something changes, he’ll call and let me know.”

Cutter has no regrets and felt like he left everything on the field.

Clemson has only two open linebacker scholarships in the class of 2023, however, Mill Creek (Hoschton, Ga.) four-star Jamal Anderson verbally pledged to the Tigers on Monday and with Denmark (Alpharetta, Ga.) Dee Crayton announcing his commitment date for this Saturday.

Everything points to Clemson filling both of those scholarship spots after this weekend.

While Cutter would love to have an offer from Clemson in hand, that level of honesty from Goodwin and college coaches around the country is probably the most important thing to him throughout his recruitment process.

In the meantime, Cutter camped at the University of South Carolina and visited App State on June 8. He also has an official visit(s) set for Louisville (June 21) and West Virginia (June 23).

“I’m very happy right now with where I’m at the schools I’m visiting this month,” Cutter said regarding his current recruitment. “I think I’ll definitely be happy going to any of those places. I would really love that offer from Clemson, being there at the camp, but I’m wanting to commit pretty soon — probably next month (July) or maybe later.”

It’s that time of the year again.

The Clemson Insider was on hand for Day 2 of the Dabo Swinney Camp on Thursday, June 2. Here are our notes and observations from the morning session of Thursday’s Swinney Camp:

— If there was any doubt that Greenville (S.C.) 2024 four-star WR Mazeo Bennett was a top target, a member of Clemson’s coaching staff and Clemson senior director of recruiting Jordan Sorrells came out to greet him, as he arrived Thursday.

— The same could be said for Webb School of Knoxville (Tenn.) 2024 four-star ATH Markeis Barrett and IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) 2024 four-star Brandon Winton. The same coach that greeted Bennett, greeted both Barrett and Winton, who are close friends and former teammates.

— We didn’t have a chance to watch St. Joseph’s Prep School (Philadelphia, Pa.) four-star cornerback, Omilio Agard, during the individual drills, but we can tell you that there was a lot of attention surrounding his workout. Agard told us that he would be working out during the morning session and take a visit later this afternoon. It would be surprising if Agard didn’t leave campus today with an offer.

— When Clemson formally turned the page to offering prospects in the 2024 class on Wednesday and started doling out offers to rising junior recruits, one of the first to report an offer from the Tigers was Carrollwood Day School (Tampa, Fla.) four-star cornerback Tavoy Feagin. We can tell you that Feagin was in attendance during Thursday’s camp and certainly looked the part from what we could see.

— Another defensive back that we noticed was Moody (Ala.) 2024 four-star A’mon Lane. While Lane is listed as a cornerback by multiple recruiting services, he was working out with the safeties this morning and received a lot of attention from co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Mickey Conn.

— Lane’s teammate, Moody (Ala.) 2023 three-star WR Davion Dozier was a name that we highlighted as a potential offer target. Dozier told us that he would be camping at Clemson Thursday, in hopes that he can earn that coveted offer. Standing at 6-foot-4, Dozier certainly looks the part. He’s a tall, lengthy receiver and a smooth route-runner.

— As we alluded to earlier, today was a big day for the receivers. Mazeo Bennett and IMG Academy’s Winston Watkins, the younger cousin of former Clemson standout, Sammy Watkins, were the main attractions. Winston, who is a Texas A&M commit, is as fast as advertised. All eyes were on the dynamic athlete, as his speed certainly stands out.

— Another receiver we watched was Chris Lawson, Jr. out of Columbia’s (S.C.) Ridge View High School. Lawson has multiple Power Five offers with N.C. State, Duke and West Virginia standing out. The hope is like Dozier, he can earn an offer due to his performance today. That remains to be seen, but interest from Tyler Grisham was enough to warrant Thursday’s camp visit.

— While the quarterbacks weren’t as talented as the group we saw Wednesday, there were a couple of names on the younger side that we were rather impressed with. Clay-Chalkville (Pinson, Ala.) 2024 four-star Kamari McClellan and Carrolton’s (Ga.) Julian Lewis. While Lewis is a class of 2026 prospect, he sure can spin it. He already holds multiple Power Five offers from programs like Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Oregon and Penn State, and has yet to throw a pass at the high school level.

— One linebacker we were really impressed with was East Lincoln (Denver, N.C.) 2023 three-star Ben Cutter. His coverage skills were superb and from what we saw, he looks like an offer-worthy candidate. Whether that happens, obviously remains to be seen, but Cutter has built up a relationship with Wesley Goodwin and is almost certainly high up on Clemson’s defensive coordinator/linebackers coach’s board.

— We liked what we saw out of Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.) 2025 offensive lineman Cortez Smith, who has the athleticism to play any position across the line. He’s quickly cementing himself as one of the top offensive linemen in the class of 2025.

Fast-rising Carolinas LB: Clemson ‘just a great place to be’

Clemson continues to impress a fast-rising Carolinas linebacker who was on campus on Saturday, March 12 for the Tigers’ underclassmen day.

East Lincoln (Denver, N.C.) 2023 inside linebacker Ben Cutter had been keeping close contact with Wesley Goodwin, who invited him to come up earlier this month, for what was his first unofficial visit that wasn’t tied to a camp or gameday trip.

“It was great,” Cutter told The Clemson Insider Sunday. “I got to meet Coach Goodwin and I really like him as a person. He’s a great guy. We had a position meeting and he knows what he’s talking about. He’s very smart with football and how he sets things up on the field. Clemson’s always just a great place to be. A lot of my core values are the same as Coach Swinney’s and he implements them into the program, which is just amazing being there.”

This was Cutter’s first time meeting Clemson’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in person.

“It was cool,” he said. “I got to talk to (Coach Goodwin) a little bit after the visit, one-on-one. It’s good being able to see him in person because that helps build the relationship rather than just texting each other.

“I definitely learned a lot about their defense and Coach Goodwin is good at teaching. A lot of people told me that his best attribute is that he’s a great teacher and I could tell just by being in the meeting that he’s a great teacher. The way in which he sets up the defensive calls and defensive plays, it just makes it easier to learn some of the calls they use and the way they correlate together.”

Cutter likes the defense and feels like he could fit in pretty well, he said.

Goodwin has only seen Cutter move around a little bit, but he wants to see the fast-rising linebacker participate in this upcoming summer’s Dabo Swinney Camp before pulling the trigger on an offer.

“We talked and he said that they’re interested,” Cutter said of a potential offer.

Cutter went to a Rivals camp in Charlotte (N.C.) a couple of weeks ago and he got some film out of him doing some one-on-ones in position drills. Cutter feels like the film he put out, which helped him earn the camps’ linebacker MVP, is really good and is hopeful that it’ll start sparking some interest from some high-profile programs

A day later, he picked up an ACC offer from the University of Louisville.

“It meant a lot,” he said. “Obviously for the coaches, I have a lot of respect for them because a lot of the Power Five programs like to wait around for the first (school) to offer, then they’ll start doing it. I definitely respect Coach (Derek) Nicholson — the inside linebackers coach — he’s the one who offered me. I respect him a lot for being the first one and I think it’s a big step for me to get my name out there more.”

Cutter wants to get back to Clemson soon, but he’s not sure when he’ll go because he has some visits that he has to make dates for that he hasn’t been on yet. Cutter will be visiting Louisville and South Carolina soon, as well as visiting App State on Saturday, April 9.

While he won’t be able to make Clemson’s spring game, he indicated that he’ll definitely camp at Clemson this summer.

Tar Heel State LB set to visit this weekend, excited to meet Goodwin

Clemson is set to play host to a fast-rising linebacker from the Tar Heel State this weekend.

East Lincoln (Denver, N.C.) 2023 inside linebacker Ben Cutter will be on campus this Saturday, March 12, and he confirmed that via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.

“We’ve just been talking about how I’ve been training and stuff and what camps I’ll be going to,” Cutter told The Clemson Insider last month. “I’m going to Clemson for spring practice at some point, I just don’t know which one I’m going to yet. We’ve just been talking about stuff like that.”

Obviously, we now know that Cutter will be at Clemson this weekend and will have the chance to meet with Clemson’s co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Cutter told us Wednesday that he’s excited to meet Goodwin for the first time in person this weekend.

“It’s good to have a defensive coordinator reaching out to me rather than someone that just recruits my area because it means more,” Cutter said of his relationship with Goodwin. “But yeah, he seems like a really good guy.”

Goodwin had a chance to watch Cutter’s film and told him that he had a lot of really good clips on there.

Right now, Cutter is working on a lot of speed training. He’s looking to drop a little bit of weight to around 210-pounds, so he can run his fastest at camps. Cutter wants to outwork his competition and earn a linebacker spot at some schools.

Cutter is starting to receive a lot more attention than he previously was. He’s made two visits to Chapel Hill in as many months and was at West Virginia at the beginning of last month. Since January, Cutter has earned offers from Charlotte, James Madison, Old Dominion, Gardner Webb and Tulane.

It’s only a matter of time before he blows up and earns offers from Power 5 schools. In Cutter’s personal opinion, he feels like they’re waiting to see his speed, which is something he is working on improving right now and currently training for.

“I’m hoping when they see that number, it’ll bring a lot more attention,” he said.

Regardless, he currently has the attention of Goodwin and Clemson, who he’ll get a chance to impress this weekend.

“They check off all my boxes, as far as Christian family atmosphere,” Cutter said. “That’s really what I’m looking for in a college and whoever can help me reach my full potential in football. I think Clemson can do that and also, the coaching staff is amazing. I really like all of them and had a chance to meet them at the game-day visits. It’s a great program.”

Carolinas LB staying in touch with Clemson, looks up to Skalski

A linebacker from the Tar Heel State has been in contact with Wes Goodwin and Mickey Conn.

East Lincoln (Denver, N.C.) 2023 inside linebacker Ben Cutter has been texting back and forth with Clemson’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Cutter sent Goodwin his highlights and asked him if he could get back to him on anything he can work on or anything that he sees on film that he could get better at going forward.

“Just the things I’ve heard about him, he seems to be a really good coach,” Cutter said of Goodwin in a recent conversation with The Clemson Insider. “I think that he’s ready to take over a bigger role and it just happened to be that he got it now.”

Both Goodwin and Conn are keeping tabs on Cutter.

Conn, Clemson’s co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach had been keeping in touch with Cutter prior to Brent Venables’ departure to Oklahoma and has continued to do so with the Tigers’ now-former defensive coordinator in Norman.

He gets the sense that Clemson is interested in him and wants to continue to cultivate relationships with the coaching.

While he’s unsure of when he’ll be making a return visit to Clemsom, Cutter would love to be back in Tiger Town in the near future.

As far as his junior campaign is concerned, Cutter ended his season with 158 tackles (averaging 13.2 per game), a pick-six, four forced fumbles and a sack. He feels like he played pretty good, despite dealing with a shoulder injury across his first couple of games. Cutter was also hobbled by an ankle injury as well.

“This season was really good getting my film out,” he said. “I actually made a highlight tape of my sophomore and junior season(s), it was my top-25 plays. It looks really good. I’ve been sending that out.”

You’d be hard pressed to find someone who watches more film than Cutter.

He plays the MIKE-backer position in his school’s 3-3-5 defensive scheme. Cutter can play all-around and just about every linebacker position, but because of his height — he’s 6-1 — the MIKE position is a better fit for him at the next level.

Cutter’s looked at as the quarterback of his defense and he’s been in that position since his sophomore year. He repeats the plays and makes sure everyone around him knows what they’re doing. He prides himself on his leadership.

He’s definitely a fan of the way James Skalski plays. Cutter was fortunate enough to watch the highly-decorated Clemson linebacker in person this past season.

“I love the way Skalski plays,” Cutter said. “He’s really good. Watching him play in the game’s I went to this year teaches me a lot about how to be aggressive and attack things. It seems like even when another team runs a trick play and nobody else knows what’s happening, he’s always on it.”

Cutter participated in the Adidas All-American 2022 National Combine in San Antonio (TX.) on Friday, Jan. 7.

He continues to receive more interest on the recruiting trail and is hopeful that his times this past weekend’s combine will help further put him in the spotlight.

In addition to his Clemson interest, the under-the-radar linebacker holds offers from App State, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina and Liberty.

North Carolina linebacker: ‘Great feeling’ to hear from a big school like Clemson

A fast-rising linebacker prospect is drawing interest from Clemson and just might be making his way back up to Death Valley sometime soon.

Denver (N.C.) East Lincoln linebacker Ben Cutter was in attendance as an unofficial visitor for Clemson’s 49-3 victory over S.C. State on Saturday, Sept. 11, and the class of 2023 recruit was blown away by his game-day experience on campus.

“It was really great, ” Cutter told The Clemson Insider. “Definitely one of the better experiences of the colleges I have been to so far. Got a tour and everything’s really nice at Clemson. I really enjoyed my time there.”

Following Clemson’s 49-3 win over S.C. State on Saturday, Sept. 11, Cutter had a chance to speak with coach Dabo Swinney and defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Brent Venables in the locker room.

“Coach Venables talked to me and said that he really likes the way I play and he wanted me to get back for another game and start building that relationship with him, so the recruiting process can start going,” he said.

Cutter is planning on getting back down to The Valley for a game this season and while he has three games to pick from, he isn’t sure when he’ll be making his return just yet.

Obviously, Cutter is aware of what Clemson and specifically Venables have been able to develop/produce at the linebacker position. With that being said, what does it mean to Cutter that he’s on Clemson’s radar and that they’re clearly showing interest?

“It’s pretty crazy, just all this blowing up since Sept. 1,” Cutter said. “It’s been pretty chaotic, but it’s really cool that a big school like Clemson is talking to me. It’s a great feeling.”

Prior to Sept. 1, Cutter had camped at the Dabo Swinney Camp this past summer and

“This past offseason was the first time that I talked to Coach Venables after the camp,” he added. “He got me to send him my film. Then, [safeties] coach [Mickey] Conn got on the phone with me before the Clemson-Georgia game and invited me there.”

Cutter indicated that he certainly feels there’s mutual interest there.

Circling back to Cutter’s game day experience in Clemson, what would he say was the highlight of the whole ordeal?

“Definitely going into the locker room,” he said. “It was a cool experience getting to see everybody, like all the players after the game, getting all excited and dancing around. It was pretty cool.”

Getting to take game visits in the first place is a product of Cutter being on the rise as a national prospect. He holds offers from App State, Coastal Carolina and ECU, but his recruitment has just begun to take off. Cutter accredits that to being able to show what he was made of on the camp circuit this past summer.

“Just being able to show my speed, athleticism, things that are [necessary] for a linebacker,” Cutter said. “You can show speed on film, but not as well as you can at the camps. I think there’s a lot of things that colleges really look for, but just being able to see in me and person and just see my size and stuff like that.”

In addition to Clemson and the schools mentioned above, Cutter has been on game day visits to UNC, West Virginia, Duke and he’ll be going to Wake Forest on Saturday, Oct. 30.

This process has taken off for Cutter in just under six months. What does that mean to him?

“It’s really exciting and it’s a privilege to be able to hear from some of these bigger schools,” he said. “It’s really a dream come true to even be able to be where I am right now, but there’s always more to work for.”

For Cutter, it’s “relieving” that his hard work has begun to pay off and that schools have been able to take notice.
