LB Ben Burr-Kirven ready to play in his first game back

Football is back!

The Seattle Seahawks are moments away from their first action of the 2023 preseason. Finally, after months of waiting, football is nearly back.

It is not just back for fans around the Pacific Northwest and country, but it is also back for a certain Seattle Seahawk. Linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven is set to enjoy his first NFL action since his devastating knee injury back in the 2021 preseason.

Gregg Bell is right in the tweet above. Burr-Kirven was under the impression he would not be able to resume his football career. His ACL was torn, but also suffered tremendous nerve damage which affected his leg. Burr-Kirven being able to play is nothing short of a medical marvel, thanks to an experimental surgery.

Burr-Kirven has a long way to go to make the final roster, but there’s a reason why the Seahawks wanted him back even after two years of not being able to play. A strong showing tonight against the Vikings will go a long way for continuing his dream of professional football.

Ben Burr-Kirven was told he couldn’t play football again

Through the miracles of modern medicine, an experimental surgery could perhaps revive his dream of playing in the NFL

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven, a name 12’s probably have not thought about in a while, looks to be back in action. Originally a fifth round pick in the 2019 NFL draft, Burr-Kirven had mostly been a depth player and special teamer for Seattle.

Unfortunately, a devastating knee injury suffered in 2021 almost put the kibosh on his NFL career. Not only did the former Washington Husky tear his ACL, he also suffered extensive nerve damage in his knee.

But through the miracles of modern medicine, an experimental surgery could perhaps revive his dream of playing in the NFL. It was a long road to even get to this point, one where Burr-Kirven was told he could no longer play football. In an interview on Seahawks.com, Burr-Kirven spoke at length on this topic:

Oh, definitely,” he quickly responded when asked if he doubted he’d ever return. “Because that’s what I was being told. I was being told I wasn’t going to play football again. So that’s what I was trying to suss out, am I really done, or are there things I can do? … I just decided, all right, let’s see how far we can take this, and if I couldn’t get back here, I couldn’t get back here, but there wasn’t going any scenario in which I didn’t at least try and see what was possible…

It was a long journey to get to this point, and it’s going to be an even longer one if he wants to remain a Seahawk. But given the fact he has made it this far, perhaps the young man has what it takes to go a little further.

Seahawks re-sign former linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven

He’s wearing No. 48 this time around.

It’s almost August and the Seahawks are still eyeing the menu at linebacker, anxiously looking for more options. After trying out a few front-seven options earlier this week, the latest news on this front is that of a familiar face came in for a workout recently.

According to Aaron Wilson, Seattle brought in former Seahawks and Huskies linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven for a workout yesterday.

Burr-Kirven (6-foot-0, 222 pounds) was a standout his last two seasons at Washington, then he got picked by Seattle in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft.

Burr-Kirven went on to play 32 games for the Seahawks over the next two seasons. The vast majority of his work was on special teams, totaling nearly 600 snaps there compared to just 14 on defense.

Unfortunately, just before the 2021 season Burr-Kirven suffered a major knee injury in the first preseason game. He was carted off the field with what turned out to be an ACL tear. Burr-Kirven was placed on IR and hasn’t been on an NFL roster since.

Update:

The team has re-signed him. He’s wearing No. 48 this time around.

Seahawks save cap space by cutting RG Gabe Jackson, LB Ben Burr-Kirven

According to Field Yates at ESPN, the Seahawks have cut their starting right guard, Gabe Jackson.

According to Field Yates at ESPN, the Seahawks have cut their starting right guard, Gabe Jackson. He is the first cut of the offseason for Seattle.

Doing so was always kind of an obvious move. A nine-year veteran, Jackson is now 32 years old and the team will get substantial cap savings. According to Over the Cap, the Seahawks save $6.5 million by cutting Jackson. The move does come with a dead money charge of $4,762,223.

Looking ahead, Phil Haynes should project as the new starting right guard. He rotated snaps with Jackson this past season, playing a total of 485 offensive snaps, 51% of the team’s total. Haynes recently signed a one-year deal worth $4 million.

The Seahawks have also released former Washington Huskies linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven. He had been with the team since 2019 but hadn’t played since the 2021 preseason when he suffered a major knee injury. Cutting Burr-Kirven only saves $940,000 in salary cap space.

Seahawks linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven still trying to make a comeback

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven is still trying to make a return after suffering a knee injury during the 2021 preseason.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven has been diligently working to make it back on the football field after injuring his knee two preseasons ago.

Burr-Kirven could not battle back from the torn ACL he suffered in 2021 and was cut by the Seahawks last July after failing his physical. He spent the 2022 season on Seattle’s reserve/physically unable to perform list.

Coach Pete Carroll provided an update on the former Husky during his final press conference of the season.

“He’s in a little bit of an experimental mode, the surgeries that he’s had and the process that he’s going through,” Carroll told reporters. “He is making progress, he’s always in the weight room with us, he’s always here working, really with a tremendous mentality. The nerve issues, there’s really intricate stuff going on, so he’s had to have a really good attitude to stay in the fight, and he is, he’s in the fight, and he’s planning on getting back out there. We’re going to give him every chance, if he can do it, this is going to be the place he does it.

“So we’ll see what happens, but he’s upbeat, he’s positive, and he’s made improvements in an area that sometimes you don’t make any.”

Seahawks release LB Ben Burr-Kirven after failed physical

The Seattle Seahawks released linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven after a failed physical designation in the wake of Chris Carson’s retirement.

In the aftermath of running back Chris Carson’s retirement from the NFL, the Seattle Seahawks have handed linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven his walking papers after a failed physical designation.

Seattle drafted Burr-Kirven in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of the University of Washington. Throughout his three-year career thus far, he has rarely seen the field on defense but has been used extensively on special teams, where he has thrived.

Burr-Kirven suffered a torn ACL in the preseason last year and missed the entire 2021 season as a result. He would be released by the Seahawks on July 26 after failing his physical.

Jordyn Brooks and Cody Barton are expected to lead the linebacker corps in 2022 with the releases of Bobby Wagner and Burr-Kirven, while Rashaad Penny and rookie Kenneth Walker III will receive significant playing time in replacing Carson at running back.

Seahawks Preseason: All duds and no studs in 30-3 loss to the Broncos

The Seahawks are now 0-2 in exhibition games this August, being trounced in both games by a combined score of 50-10.

For the first time since December 29th, 2019 Lumen Field was open for the ever-loyal 12th Man to return to the stands. Unfortunately for the 12’s hungry for a Seattle Seahawks win, they were subjected to an abysmal 30-3 preseason loss at the hands of the Denver Broncos.

For a second straight week Seattle rested several critical starters and key impact players on both sides of the ball. As a result, the Seahawks looked lifeless in every phase of the game against their former AFC West foes.

Despite losing 20-7 last week, there were some individual bright spots for the Seahawks. This is not the case for their loss to the Broncos. Only Duds.

Seahawks waive 2 players, place 2 others on injured reserve

These four moves puts the Seahawks roster at 80 players ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

The Seattle Seahawks have placed linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven and wide receiver John Ursua on the injured reserve list. Both players suffered season-ending ACL tears in Saturday night’s preseason game against the Denver Broncos.

Seattle also announced that quarterback Alex McGough and defensive tackle Cedric Lattimore have been waived. McGough threw two interceptions against Denver and also lost a fumble, all in the first half.

These four moves puts the Seahawks roster at 80 players ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. So, if the team wants to sign defensive tackle Geno Atkins – who visited with the team today – they’ll have to cut somebody else.

Rosters need to be trimmed down to 53 players by August 31.

Seahawks LB Ben Burr-Kirven, WR John Ursua both suffered season-ending ACL tears

Two players had to be carted off the field, and it appears both of them will miss the entire 2021 campaign.

The Seahawks suffered several serious injuries in Saturday night’s preseason loss to the Broncos. Two players had to be carted off the field, and it appears both of them will miss the entire 2021 campaign.

Wide receiver John Ursua shared the news on his Instagram page that he has a torn ACL and is out for the year.

Ian Rapoport at NFL Network is also reporting that linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven has also torn his ACL and will miss the whole season.

Tragic news on both accounts. Ursua had been impressing and had a chance to earn legitimate playing time behind the starters at wide reciever. Meanwhile, Burr-Kirven was a critical special teams contributor each of the last two years.

Seahawks suffer numerous injuries in preseason loss to Broncos

A number of Seattle Seahawks players suffered serious injuries in the team’s preseason loss to the Denver Broncos on Saturday night.

The Seattle Seahawks fell to the Denver Broncos Saturday night at Lumen Field but the score ended up being the least of the team’s concerns after two players were carted off the field with injuries in the first half of the matchup.

Linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven and wide receiver John Ursua both sustained knee injuries and were ultimately ruled out of the contest.

During his post-game press conference, coach Pete Carroll provided limited updates on both players.

“Both those guys got hurt seriously tonight,” Carroll said. “We’ll see what happens with them. It’s going to be a while.”

Carroll gave no firm timetable for either’s return pending further evaluation.

Defensive back Ryan Neal also suffered an injury Saturday night, which Carroll confirmed was an oblique strain.

The Seahawks have an off day Sunday and return to practice on Monday although there is no media availability until Tuesday when Carroll should have updates on all the injured players.
