The Chicago Bears have announced an updated 16-player practice squad, which features many familiar faces that were difficult cuts over the last couple of days, as well as some new additions.

The Bears signed newcomers defensive linemen Deslin Alexandre and Daniel Hardy, offensive lineman Bill Murray and kicker John Parker Romo to the practice squad.

As part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway, the Bears can keep offensive tackle Roy Mbaeteka as an extra (17th) practice squad player this season. Mbaeteka will not count against the 16-player limit.

Report: Bears plan to bring back DT Trevon Coley on practice squad

Trevon Coley was among the surprising cuts by the Bears on Tuesday. But it sounds like he could be back on the practice squad.

The Chicago Bears have trimmed their initial roster to 53 players, which featured some tough cuts.

Among those was defensive tackle Trevon Coley, who put together a dominant preseason in Chicago. In three games, Coley totaled 3 sacks and 6 quarterback hits.

But the good news is it sounds like Coley could be making a return to the Bears.

According to Jordan Schultz, Chicago plans on bringing back Coley to their practice squad if he isn’t signed by another team.

Coley is a vested veteran, so he doesn’t hit the waiver wire, and he’s free to sign with a team as a free agent. It sounds like Coley will sign to the Bears practice squad if he doesn’t get a 53-man roster opportunity elsewhere.

The waiver claim deadline is Wednesday at 11 a.m. CT.  Those waiver claims will be announced an hour later and then teams can begin filling out their practice squads.

We took a shot at predicting Chicago’s practice squad, which included Coley:

Bear Necessities: Rodney Adams is back…on the practice squad

After making the initial 53-man roster and then being waived, WR Rodney Adams is back with the Bears…on the practice squad, that is.

This is our online morning newsletter, Bear Necessities. Subscribe to get the latest Bears news delivered to your mailbox every day.

Following an impressive training camp and even better preseason, under-the-radar wide receiver Rodney Adams made a strong case of a spot on the Bears’ 53-man roster. So when Adams made Chicago’s initial 53-man roster on Tuesday — as the fifth wide receiver — the feel-good story of the summer came to fruition.

Well, that feel-good story lasted just one day as the Bears waived Adams on Wednesday to make room for receiver Nsimba Webster, who the team had claimed off waivers.

The move itself was shocking considering Adams, who no doubt had played his way onto the roster. But with the Bears in need of a punt returner, the Webster move made a ton of sense. Only, at the expense of Adams. And surely the decision to sign veteran Breshad Perriman (which is still in progress) factored in.

When the Bears built their initial 13-player practice squad they left three vacant spots, one of which was being held for Adams, who cleared waivers Wednesday and was signed to the practice squad soon after.

Perhaps we haven’t seen the last of Adams, who could be another focal point of training camp and preseason come next season.

Predicting the Chicago Bears’ 2021 practice squad

The Bears can start building their practice squad Wednesday at 3 p.m. CT. Here are our predictions for the Bears’ initial practice squad.

The Chicago Bears have formed their initial 53-man roster, cutting 27 players in the process. Unfortunately, that meant a lot of good players were cut, including a pair of sixth-round rookies.

Following the final round of cuts, GM Ryan Pace will start assembling his 16-player practice squad, which can include up to six players with more than two accrued seasons, beginning Wednesday at 3 p.m. CT. The practice squad serves as an extension of the active roster, which will provide depth at certain positions.
