Bears WR Cordarrelle Patterson pops up on Thursday injury report

There was a surprise on the Bears’ injury report on Thursday as they prepare for an NFC North showdown against the Packers.

[jwplayer d1i7mOeQ-ThvAeFxT]

The Chicago Bears didn’t receive any favors from their injury report as a new name popped up on Thursday. And it’s not a player the Bears can afford to lose heading into a pivotal game against the Green Bay Packers.

Receiver/returner/all-around weapon Cordarrelle Patterson was limited in practice Thursday with a head injury.

Cornerback Prince Amukamara was a full participant in practice for the second straight day. Amukamara is recovering from a hamstring injury, but barring any setbacks it seems like he’ll be ready for Sunday.

It’s not looking good for the six Bears that didn’t practice Wednesday, who all missed Thursday’s practice. Defensive end Roy Robertson-Harris remains sidelined with a foot injury, while receiver Javon Wims is out with what’s believed to be a slight knee sprain.

Receiver Taylor Gabriel and tight end Ben Braunecker remain in concussion protocol for a third straight week, and their statuses for Sunday don’t look good.

As far as hoping linebacker Danny Trevathan would be good to return to practice this week, it’s not meant to be as he’s missed practice both Wednesday and Thursday.

Bears Injury Report: CB Prince Amukamara returns to practice

The Bears released their first injury report of the week, and CB Prince Amukamara returned to practice. But 6 other Bears didn’t practice.

The Chicago Bears hit the practice field on Wednesday getting a boost with the return of a defensive starter.

Cornerback Prince Amukamara, who suffered a hamstring injury against the Lions on Thanksgiving, returned to practice as a full participant Wednesday, and if there are no setbacks, he should be ready for Green Bay on Sunday.

With the loss of Roquan Smith for the season with a torn pectoral muscle, the Bears are getting some good news on the defensive side of the ball with Amukamara being a full participant in practice and aiming to play Sunday.

The Bears are also gearing up for the return of defensive lineman Akiem Hicks, who should provide a big boost to Chicago’s defense. While Hicks is expected to return Sunday, the Bears haven’t activated him off injured reserve yet, so he did not show up on Wednesday’s injury report.

But defensive end Roy Robertson-Harris’ status is up-in-the-air for Sunday, as he missed Wednesday’s practice with a foot injury sustained against the Cowboys.

While Matt Nagy wouldn’t rule out linebacker Danny Trevathan returning against the Packers, it didn’t look encouraging that he missed practice.

Over on the offensive side of the ball, receiver Javon Wims did not practice after he suffered what Ian Rapoport reported was a slight knee sprain. Tight end Ben Braunecker (concussion), receiver Taylor Gabriel (concussion) and right tackle Bobby Massie (ankle) haven’t practiced for heading into their third straight week.

Bears CB Prince Amukamara wary of rushing back from hamstring injury

While Bears CB Prince Amukamara would like to get back out on the field, he’s aware of rushing back from a hamstring injury.

Bears cornerback Prince Amukamara knows the dangers of rushing back from a hamstring injury. Look no further than Vikings receiver Adam Thielen, who hurt his hamstring in Week 7, and has missed all but one game since.

In that Week 9 game against the Chiefs, Thielen played on the Vikings’ first drive, but he didn’t play again after that.

“His has been lingering,” Amukamara said Monday. “You don’t want that to linger. So I think it’s tough but with this game being on the line I’m just trying to make sure and do what’s best for our team.”

Amukamara suffered a hamstring injury against the Lions on Thanksgiving. When speaking with reporters on Monday, he said that he’s been running well lately.

“We’re going to keep monitoring it and see where I am,” he said.

Second-year cornerback Kevin Toliver got the start in relief of the injured Amukamara, and he fared well against the Cowboys’ talented receiving corp.

If Amukamara can’t go, Matt Nagy is confident in Toliver going up against the Packers.

“For the most part, overall I thought it was good for him,” he said. “He got a chance to go out there and see what he could do. Every bit of experience that he can get is only going to help make him better down the road.”

Bears DL Akiem Hicks prepared for return vs. Packers

There isn’t a better return queued up for Bears DL Akiem Hicks than this Sunday against the Packers at Lambeau Field.

As far as grand returns go, there’s no better week for Bears defensive lineman Akiem Hick to make it back out on the field than against the Packers.

While Bears coach Matt Nagy has been careful not to guarantee Hicks will return Sunday at Lambeau Field, Hicks, who referred to this week as a “regular work week,” sounds like a man preparing to start.

The Bears will return to practice on Wednesday, and the team will have three days to determine if Hicks is good to go against Green Bay.

“The mentality for him is try to get stronger each and every day,” Nagy said. “He hasn’t been through any of the live stuff at all. Each day try to stay positive, try to get stronger and see where it takes us by the end of the week. But hopefully he’ll be ready to go.”

If Hicks is indeed good to go, the Bears will have to activate him off injured reserve by Saturday.

While Hicks insists that he’s not there yet, he believes that he’ll be good to go come Sunday. The most important thing is making sure that he’s ready when he returns to the field.

“One of the things I really focused on was making sure my elbow was in the strongest place possible,” Hicks said. “We still have some finishing up to do. All these days to make gains and get a little bit better. Just working on that.”

Hicks, whose lone sack in his four starts came against the Packers in Week 1, said his elbow feels good. Although he won’t know for sure until he hits the field.

“Everything’s going to come to light those first couple plays,” he said. “There’s nothing like that first moment of being back, or stepping on the field, and that first contact. You can simulate in whatever environment you want, but there’s nothing like it.”

Bears ILB Roquan Smith out for the season with torn pectoral muscle

The Bears suffered another major blow on defense with the loss of second-year ILB Roquan Smith, who was placed on IR with a torn pec.

The Chicago Bears have suffered some blows on defense this season, and they suffered another one with news of inside linebacker Roquan Smith’s pec injury.

Coach Matt Nagy confirmed that Smith suffered a torn pectoral muscle and will miss the rest of the season.

Smith sustained the injury early in the first quarter of last Thursday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys on the opening drive of the game. He was taken to the injury tent and then taken to the locker room. The team announced he was “out” for the rest of the game, which didn’t look encouraging.

While Smith had a rough start to the season, he was playing some of his best ball in the last month looking like the All-Pro Chicago hopes he’ll become.

“I really thought you felt him, especially here in the last several games really turning it on, really playing fast,” Nagy said. “He’s always had that every play that he gets, every game that he plays, for the rest of his career, he’s only gonna get better and better in my opinion. … I like where he’s at. It’s just unfortunate that it ended like that.”

In 12 games, Smith had 100 tackles, 5 tackles-for-loss, 2 sacks and an interception.

Long week gives Bears chance to get healthy ahead of matchup vs. Packers

Following back-to-back Thursday games, the Bears get some extra time for injured players to rest up ahead of Packers game.

Following back-to-back Thursday games, the Bears had a long weekend to rest up before preparing for a divisional matchup against the Packers this Sunday.

While the Bears avoided the injury bug last season, they’ve been unable to escape it in 2019. They’ve lost three defensive starters to injury throughout the season: Defensive lineman Akiem Hicks (elbow), linebacker Danny Trevathan (elbow) and linebacker Roquan Smith (pec).

And there have been countless other injuries, including the loss of right guard Kyle Long, defensive back/special teams ace Sherrick McManis and both tight ends Trey Burton and Adam Shaheen.

But there appears to be some good news on the horizon, starting this week in preparation for Green Bay. Hicks is eligible to return from injured reserve this week against the Packers. He practiced last week with the team, and Bears coach Matt Nagy said that, win or lose against the Cowboys, Hicks would return if he could.

Many have wondered why Trevathan, who suffered a gruesome elbow injury against the Lions in Week 10, hasn’t been placed on injured reserve. That’s because Nagy has left the door open for his return this season. In fact, Nagy wouldn’t rule out Trevathan’s return against Green Bay.

While Roquan Smith’s season appears done, as he suffered what’s believed to be a torn pec against Dallas, there were two other players injured against the Cowboys that have some extra time to rest up for next Sunday. Defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris suffered a foot injury, and wide receiver Javon Wims suffered what Ian Rapoport reported is a slight knee sprain, which he sustained near the end of the first half.

With the Bears having 10 days to prepare for the Packers, it’s also allowing some players that have been banged up — or looking to return to the lineup — some extra time to rest up.

Bears LB Kevin Pierre-Louis shines in relief of injured Roquan Smith

The Bears lost starting ILB Roquan Smith to a pectoral injury, and they found success with veteran ILB Kevin Pierre-Louis.

The Chicago Bears defense has faced a lot of adversity this season with injuries to starters Akiem Hicks, Danny Trevathan and Prince Amukamara.

They lost another defensive starter in the first quarter of Thursday’s 31-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys when Roquan Smith suffered a pectoral injury on the Cowboys’ opening possession.

But, unfortunately, losing a key contributor is nothing new for this 2019 Bears team, who were incredibly lucky on the injury front last season.

“We’re just a resilient team,” linebacker Leonard Floyd said. “A team full of fighters, and we’re going to go out and fight every game to win. It’s the group of guys we’ve got in the building. Everybody has a next-man-up mentality. And guys are doing a good job of coming in and playing hard.”

Veteran inside linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis relieved Smith in the first quarter. And he didn’t just play well — he played lights out. Pierre-Louis recorded five tackles, one tackle-for-loss, one quarterback hit and two pass break-ups against the Cowboys.

For Pierre-Louis, there was no hesitation when his number was called.

“In those moments, there’s no time to think like that,” he said.

“You’ve just got to be there for your brothers and then just go with what you’ve been practicing each week. I’m blessed to have the guys round me to help me out if I need help — guys rushing; guys covering. I just need to do my job.”

With reports that Smith tore his pectoral muscle, it’s likely his season is done, which means that Pierre-Louis will have at least three more games to prove himself. And the next game — a Week 15 showdown against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field — couldn’t be bigger.

Could Bears ILB Danny Trevathan return next week vs. Packers?

Matt Nagy has remained vague on the status of ILB Danny Trevathan, and he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of him returning vs. Packers.

When Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan suffered a gruesome elbow injury against the Lions on Nov. 10, everyone feared the worst.

After all, defensive lineman Akiem Hicks was placed on injured reserve for a similar injury, and his didn’t look as bad as Trevathan’s.

And yet, there’s hope that Trevathan, who wasn’t placed on IR, could return next week for a pivotal game against the Packers at Lambeau Field.

Bears coach Matt Nagy has been vague about Trevathan’s status after he suffered what appeared to be an elbow dislocation a month ago. But Nagy has left the door open for Trevathan’s return this season.

Trevathan hasn’t practiced since his injury, but Nagy wouldn’t rule out the possibility of him returning to practice this week.

‘‘I don’t know that for sure yet,’’ Nagy said.

Trevathan was playing some of his best football at the time of his injury. He had 70 tackles in nine games, second only to Roquan Smith’s 99 after 13 games.

While Trevathan’s absence has certainly been felt, veteran Nick Kwiatkoski has filled in solidly in his absence. Since taking over for Trevathan against the Lions in Week 10, Kwiatkoski has logged 37 tackles, one sack, three pass break-ups and one interception.

Both of Chicago’s starting inside linebackers are sidelined with injuries, as Smith suffered what’s feared to be a torn pectoral muscle in the first quarter against the Cowboys.

With Kwiatkoski filling in for Trevathan, Kevin Pierre-Louis has taken over for Smith, and he had a great game with five tackles, one tackle-for-loss, one quarterback hit and two pass break-ups

In other injury news, the Bears are still evaluating the statuses of receiver Javon Wims (knee) and Roy Robertson-Harris (foot). According to Ian Rapoport, Wims avoided a serious injury suffering a slight knee sprain at the end of the second quarter of Thursday’s game.

Report: Bears WR Javon Wims has slight knee sprain

The Bears might’ve dodged a bullet with WR Javon Wims’ knee injury as it appears that it’s a slight knee sprain and nothing major.

While the Chicago Bears dismantled the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night, it didn’t come without a cost. The Bears suffered several injuries throughout the game, including linebacker Roquan Smith, who tore his pectoral muscle in the first quarter.

Another player that was struck by the injury bug was second year receiver Javon Wims, who suffered a knee injury near the end of the second quarter. Mitchell Trubisky targeted him on back-to-back plays in the endzone, but he was unable to make a play. On the second target, Wims landed awkwardly on his leg.

Wims appeared in a lot of pain as he remained on the ground while trainers surrounded him. He limped off the field and did not return.

At first glance, the fear was it could be a serious injury that would end his season. But NFL Network Ian Rapoport reported that Wims dodged a bullet as it appears the former Georgia wideout suffered a slight knee sprain.

The Bears are already thin at the receiver position with Taylor Gabriel out with a concussion. Wims saw a career-high six targets the previous week against the Detroit Lions, and it looked like he was going to be a big part of the Bears offense against the Cowboys before his injury.

Rookie receiver Riley Ridley saw some action in Wims’ place, where he caught one pass for 5 yards.

It doesn’t sound like good news for injured Bears LB Roquan Smith

The Bears lost another defensive starter to injury in a win over the Cowboys on Thursday night as Roquan Smith’s season appears to be over.

Just when it appeared that the Chicago Bears defense was getting back to full strength, they lost another starter to injury.

Second year linebacker Roquan Smith suffered a pectoral injury in the first quarter of Thursday’s 31-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

When Smith was immediately ruled out, it was an indication that it wasn’t good news. Bears coach Matt Nagy seemed to confirm as much in his postgame press conference.

“It doesn’t look real good for him,” Nagy said.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that it looks like a torn pectoral muscle for Smith.

The injury is likely to end Smith’s sophomore season. Smith had put together some strong performances over the last few weeks, and it’s certainly a brutal blow to the Bears defense.

Veteran Kevin Pierre-Louis replaced Smith and had an impressive defensive performance against the NFL’s best passing offense. But while the Bears certainly benefited from Pierre-Louis’ stellar performance, there’s no replacement for a Roquan Smith.

“Man, it sucks. It really sucks,” safety Eddie Jackson said. “You hate to see one of your brothers go down, but especially a guy like Ro. It was just kind of like a shock to the stomach.”

Smith suffered the injury on the Cowboys’ opening possession of the game, where they drove 75 yards for a touchdown. Jackson said that Smith knew he was hurt and wanted to play through it.

“He told us in the game — he thought he hurt his pec,” Jackson said. “And I was just like, ‘Dang.’ He said he’s going to finish the drive. You could see his face. I’m like, ‘Ro is still going to fight through it.’ And he fought through it. It just sucks. Ro’s having a good season. Unfortunately, it gets cut short with the injury.”
