Bears QB Justin Fields ‘progressing,’ remains week-to-week

Bears QB Justin Fields is “progressing” with his right thumb injury, but he remains week-to-week.

Bears quarterback Justin Fields will miss his second straight game as he deals with a right thumb injury suffered in a Week 6 loss to the Vikings.

Head coach Matt Eberflus told reporters Wednesday that Fields is improving and remains “week-to-week.”

“He’s doing everything he can to progress, and it is progressing,” Eberflus said.

The belief remains Fields will be able to avoid surgery and a stint on injured reserve, which would keep him out for a minimum of four games. Eberflus said grip strength is an important factor for Fields’ progress before they begin testing his pain tolerance.

With Fields sidelined, it’ll be undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent making his second NFL start. Bagent led the Bears to a 30-12 victory over the Raiders in his first career start last Sunday.

Bears LT Braxton Jones designated to return from IR

It sounds like the Bears are close to getting back starting LT Braxton Jones, who’s returning to practice Wednesday.

The Chicago Bears could be getting back a key member of the offensive line ahead of Sunday night’s matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Bears left tackle Braxton Jones has been designated to return from injured reserve, and he’ll return to practice on Wednesday, head coach Matt Eberflus announced.

Jones suffered a neck injury in a Week 2 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he landed on IR shortly after. Jones was required to miss at least four games, and he was eligible to return last week against the Las Vegas Raiders.

As for what Jones needs to prove in order to return to the lineup, Eberflus cited “functionality” in terms of his movement, as well as conditioning.

Jones’ return would provide a huge boost to a Bears offensive line coming off a solid outing against the Raiders. Larry Borom has struggled at times in Jones’ absence.

Defensive lineman Khalil Kareem, who was claimed off waivers ahead of the season, has also been designated to return from IR.

Bears RB Roschon Johnson on track to return in Week 8 against Chargers

The Bears are expected to get some reinforcements at running back as rookie Roschon Johnson is expected to make his return vs. Chargers.

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus addressed the media on Monday following the team’s 30-12 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, where he provided some updates on key offensive players.

While Chicago will likely be without quarterback Justin Fields for a second straight game, the Bears are likely to have a key piece of their backfield returning in Week 8 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Roschon Johnson is coming back,” Eberflus said. “It looks good. He has another hurdle he has to clear, but it looks real positive for Wednesday and we’ll see where it is at that time.”

The rookie running back has been sidelined since suffering a concussion back in the Bears’ Week 5 win over the Washington Commanders on Thursday Night Football. Johnson had 19 yards on three carries in the 40-20 victory.

The Texas standout has played in five games this season, accumulating 25 carries and 122 rushing yards with one touchdown. Six of Johnson’s carries have gone for first downs. Johnson has also been utilized in the passing game, collecting 58 yards on 11 receptions.

Journeyman D’Onta Foreman has taken the lion’s share of the carries in light of the injuries in the backfield and had his best day in a Bears uniform against the Raiders, rushing for 89 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns. He added another score in the passing game.

Adding Johnson back into the mix gives the Bears another weapon for Bagent, who looks set to make his second consecutive start against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Bears Week 7 inactives: Justin Fields, Eddie Jackson OUT vs. Raiders

The Bears have released their inactives ahead of today’s game vs. Raiders, where they’re missing some impact starters.

The Chicago Bears have released their inactives ahead of their Week 7 game against the Las Vegas Raiders, where Chicago is looking to get back in the win column.

The Bears will be without starting quarterback Justin Fields, who’s sidelined with a right thumb injury. That means it’ll be undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent getting the starting nod in his place.

Chicago will also be without some other impact starters in safety Eddie Jackson, who re-aggravated his foot injury in last week’s loss, as well as right guard Nate Davis, who suffered an ankle injury in Week 6.

Meanwhile, Chicago will once again be without a couple of impact rookies in running back Roschon Johnson (concussion) and cornerback Terell Smith (ankle/illness).

Here’s a look at the Bears’ inactives:

  • QB Justin Fields
  • S Eddie Jackson

Report: Bears QB Justin Fields to miss multiple games, avoid IR

Bears QB Justin Fields (right thumb) is expected to miss multiple games, according to CBS Sports, but he appears to have avoided IR.

Bears quarterback Justin Fields suffered a dislocated right thumb in last week’s loss to the Vikings. And while he’ll miss Sunday’s game against the Raiders, the injury doesn’t appear to be too serious.

According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, Fields is slated to miss multiple games, but he’s not expected to land on short-term injured reserve. If Fields were to be placed on IR, he’d be out a minimum of four games.

The move, or lack thereof, is an indication the Bears believe Fields will return the next few weeks. On Friday, head coach Matt Eberflus said he’s noticed improvement, but Fields is still considered “week-to-week.”

“The mobility’s getting better, the swelling went down, the grip strength is better,” Eberflus said. “It’s trending in the right direction. He’ll be week to week and we’ll know more Monday.”

With Fields sidelined, it’ll be undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent starting for Chicago — for however long that’ll be. Bagent is slated to make his first NFL start Sunday against the Raiders.

Looking ahead to the next four games, the Bears face the Raiders, Chargers (Sunday Night Football), Saints and Panthers (Thursday Night Football). Not landing on IR, Fields is eligible to return for any of those games.

Bears HC Matt Eberflus provides update on whether Justin Fields needs surgery

Bears coach Matt Eberflus said Justin Fields is considered week to week and “he’s improving.”

Bears quarterback Justin Fields has officially been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Raiders.

Fields suffered a dislocated right thumb on his throwing hand in a Week 6 loss to the Vikings. There was concern about how long the injury could keep Fields out — and whether it could ultimately end his season.

During his Friday press conference, head coach Matt Eberflus said Fields is considered week to week but “he’s improving.”

“The mobility’s getting better, the swelling went down, the grip strength is better,” Eberflus said. “It’s trending in the right direction. He’ll be week to week and we’ll know more Monday.”

Eberflus continues to stress the importance of Fields’ grip strength as an important component to his return.

“His grip strength isn’t there yet,” Eberflus said. “So we’ll see where it is as we go. He’s just working with the trainers right now.”

When asked whether Fields would land on injured reserve and/or require surgery on his thumb, Eberflus indicated that isn’t the case right now.

“I would also say that we’re not on that path right now,” Eberflus said. “So like I said, we’re trending in the right direction. But you can’t make that declaration right now. You continue to see the improvement as it goes.”

With Fields considered week to week, it’ll be rookie Tyson Bagent stepping in. He’s set to make his first career NFL start Sunday against Las Vegas.

Bagent, who signed as an undrafted free agent out of Division II Shepherd, replaced Fields in the second half of last week’s loss. Bagent orchestrated the team’s lone touchdown drive and nearly led a comeback drive that ended in an ill-advised interception.

We’ll see if Bagent can lead the Bears to victory on Sunday.

Bears Week 7 injury report: Who practiced, who didn’t on Thursday

Here’s a look at the Bears’ Week 7 injury report following Thursday’s practice:

The Chicago Bears (1-5) released their second injury report ahead of Sunday’s Week 7 game against the Las Vegas Raiders (3-3).

In what doesn’t come as much of a surprise, quarterback Justin Fields didn’t practice for the second straight day as he nurses a dislocated thumb on his right throwing hand. He’s doubtful for Sunday.

Right tackle Darnell Wright was a surprise addition to the injury report Wednesday, where he was limited with a shoulder injury. Unfortunately, Wright didn’t practice Thursday, which puts his status for Sunday in question.

There are plenty of other players on this loaded injury report who didn’t practice, including safety Eddie Jackson (foot), right guard Nate Davis (ankle), running back Roschon Johnson (concussion) and cornerback Terell Lewis (illness).

Bears QB Justin Fields is ‘progressing well’ but remains doubtful for Week 7

Bears HC Matt Eberflus provided a quick update on injured QB Justin Fields.

Bears quarterback Justin Fields suffered a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand in Sunday’s loss to the Vikings, which put his status for Week 7 and beyond in question.

Head coach Matt Eberflus didn’t have any significant updates on Fields’ injury, other than he won’t practice Wednesday and remains doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Raiders.

Eberflus did say he’s still working with trainers and is “progressing well.” The swelling in Fields’ right thumb has gone down, but it remains about grip strength.

Eberflus was asked about whether Fields could tape his thumb and play once the swelling is gone and his grip strength returns.

“That’s where it is … other people that have had this injury,” Eberflus said, “it’s gone that way where they’ve taped it and gone through it and they’ve played, and it’s been a week to week thing, and then all the way to having surgery and them being out. We don’t know where it is yet. We’ll figure it out later in the week.”

As for whether Fields’ thumb injury will require surgery, Eberflus said the team is still waiting to find out whether that’s needed.

“I believe we’ll have some clarity later in the week hopefully,” Eberflus said. “But, again, nothing’s off the table, nothing’s on the table right now. We still gotta see where it is.”

If Fields can’t go, it’ll be undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent making his first NFL start against the Raiders.

“Offensively, we’re preparing this week for Bagent to be the starter,” Eberflus said.
