Projecting the Bears’ depth chart as training camp begins

With the Bears kicking off training camp, we’re projecting what the depth chart currently looks like this summer.

The Chicago Bears kick off training camp this week at Halas Hall, which marks the end of a long offseason and the unofficial start to the 2023 NFL season.

And it’s certainly been an eventful offseason for Chicago, where general manager Ryan Poles overhauled the roster with some big additions, including wide receiver DJ Moore, linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards and offensive linemen Nate Davis and Darnell Wright.

While the Bears operated under the “it’s a rep chart, not a depth chart” during the offseason program, the depth chart becomes more significant now that camp has arrived.

With that in mind, we’re taking a crack at predicting what the depth chart looks like at the start of training camp:

Bears’ projected depth chart ahead of training camp

Here’s a look at the Bears’ current projected depth chart less than a month out from training camp.

The Chicago Bears roster has undergone plenty of change this offseason under general manager Ryan Poles, which has included the additions of some impact contributors, including wide receiver DJ Moore and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds.

While the Bears emphasized “it’s a rep chart, not a depth chart” this offseason, we couldn’t help but project what the depth chart might look like heading into training camp. With that in mind,we’re still awhile from any set depth chart.

Bears’ 2023 projected depth chart as minicamp gets underway

As mandatory minicamp kick off this week, we’re projecting what the Bears’ depth chart looks like.

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for the start of mandatory minicamp, which runs June 13-15.

General manager Ryan Poles has retooled the roster this offseason, adding some impact players on both offense and defense.

The Bears’ offense is expected to make strides this season, where quarterback Justin Fields will be looking to take a step forward in a pivotal Year 3 with an upgraded supporting cast around him. Chicago’s defense is looking to rebound following a brutal 2022 season, where they struggled to get after the quarterback and stop the run.

Bears defensive coordinator Alan Williams made it clear that it’s not about where players are running right now during voluntary workouts: “It’s a rep chart, not a depth chart.”

Still, we’re projecting what the Bears’ depth chart might look like ahead of minicamp.

Bears’ projected defensive depth chart before minicamp

Ahead of mandatory minicamp next week, we’re projecting what the Bears’ defensive (and special teams) depth chart looks like.

Ahead of OTAs next week, we’re projecting what the Bears’ defensive and special teams depth chart looks like.

The Chicago Bears are gearing up for the start of organized team activities (OTAs), which kick off May 22.

General manager Ryan Poles added plenty of new faves on defense, most notably at linebacker with Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards. He shored up the defensive line with Andrew Billings, DeMarcus Walker and Rasheem Green in free agency. He also added some impact players in the draft with Gervon Dexter, Tyrique Stevenson, Zacch Pickens and Terell Smith.

Bears’ projected depth chart following 2023 NFL draft

Here’s a look at the Bears’ projected depth chart after the 2023 NFL draft.

The Chicago Bears selected 10 players during the 2023 NFL draft, including right tackle Darnell Wright, defensive tackles Gervon Dexter and Zacch Pickens, and cornerbacks Tyrique Stevenson and Terell Smith.

They also added a couple of playmakers for Justin Fields in running back Roschon Johnson and wide receiver Tyler Scott, as well as linebacker Noah Sewell and a couple of seventh-round picks in Travis Bell and safety Kendall Williamson.

With the slew of moves made over the last few days, the roster looks different than it did more than a week ago. And that’s certainly impacted the projected depth chart.

Here’s a look at the Bears’ current projected depth chart after the 2023 NFL draft.

Predicting the Bears’ 2023 starting defense after first wave of free agency

Following the first wave of free agency, we’re projecting what the Bears’ starting defense will look like in 2023.

With the first wave of free agency in the books, Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles still has some work to do to continue building his roster. But he made some moves on defense, including the additions of linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards, as well as defensive linemen DeMarcus Walker and Andrew Billings.

When looking at these projections on defense, it’s clear that Poles still has some moves to make to improve this defense. You could argue there are five starting jobs that need to be filled, including possibly all four spots on the defensive line and a need at cornerback.

Following the first wave of free agency, we’re predicting what the current Bears starting defense would look like (with current players on the roster and others who could be added in the NFL draft).
