Lady Vols score 100-plus points against Western Carolina to remain undefeated

Tennessee remains undefeated after Western Carolina win.

Tennessee (5-0) defeated Western Carolina (5-3), 102-50, Tuesday at Food City Center.

The Lady Vols led the Catamounts, 54-28, at halftime.

Tennessee forced Western Carolina into 37 turnovers, resulting in 45 points.

Talaysia Cooper totaled 20 points, four assists, two rebounds and one steal. She was one of five Lady Vols to score 10-plus points in the contest.

Ruby Whitehorn recorded 16 points, seven rebounds and one assist, while Tess Darby scored 12 points for Tennessee.

Samara Spencer and Zee Spearman finished with 11 points each. Spencer recorded five assists and four rebounds, while Spearman totaled five rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Tennessee is up three spots in the latest USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

The 2024-25 college basketball season enters week No. 4. Tennessee (6-0) remains undefeated during the 2024-25 campaign.

The Vols defeated Virginia and Baylor last week to win the Continental Tire Baha Mar Championship in Nassau, Bahamas.

Tennessee will play one game this week, hosting UT Martin on Wednesday. Tipoff for the in-state matchup is slated for 4 p.m. EST at Food City Center and can be watched on SEC Network+.

Ahead of the Tennessee-UT Martin nonconference game this week, the latest USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll top 25 rankings were released. The Vols are up three spots and are ranked No. 6.

Tennessee is receiving 587 points, 180 points behind No. 1 Kansas.

J.P. Estrella announces season-ending injury

Tennessee basketball forward J.P. Estrella announces season-ending injury.

Tennessee (6-0) enters its fourth week of the 2024-25 college basketball season. The Vols have won all six of their contests to start the season.

Tennessee sophomore forward J.P. Estrella announced an injury update on Monday. The 6-foot-11, 250-pound forward will miss the remainder of the season due to a foot injury.

“Vol nation, I’m disappointed to share with all of you that, unfortunately, my 2024-25 season is over,” Estrella announced. “I’ll be getting surgery on my left foot. This has been a lingering injury and it’s important to get it addressed.”

Estrella appeared in three games for the Vols this season, averaging 4.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game.

Former Vol Dalton Knecht totaled nine points, five rebounds and one assist in 28 minutes for the Lakers.

He converted 3-of-7 field goal attempts, 1-of-4 3-point attempts and 2-of-2 free throw attempts.

The former Vol was selected in the first-round of the 2024 NBA draft (No. 17 overall) by Los Angeles.

Knecht was a transfer from Northern Colorado and played for the Vols during the 2023-24 season under coach Rick Barnes. During his one season at Tennessee, Knecht averaged 21.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.

He led the Vols to a SEC regular-season championship and an appearance in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history.

Chaz Lanier led Tennessee in scoring with 25 points against Baylor. He converted 9-of-16 field goal attempts and 7-of-10 three-point attempts.

Zakai Zeigler led the Vols in assists (9), while Jahmai Mashack was Tennessee’s leading rebounder (6).

Tennessee totaled 30 bench points, 24 points in the paint, 13 points off turnovers and two fast break points versus the Bears.

Norchad Omier led Baylor in scoring with 22 points. V.J. Edgecombe also scored 20 points for the Bears.

No. 9 Tennessee (5-0) opened play in the Baha Mar Championship on Thursday versus Virginia (3-1). Rankings reflect the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

The Vols were victorious, 64-42, at Baha Mar Convention Center in Nassau, Bahamas.

Tennessee guard Chaz Lanier led all scorers with 26 points, including 18 points in the final 18 minutes of the contest. He converted 10-of-23 field goal attempts and 6-of-12 three-point attempts.

Igor Milicic Jr. led the Vols in rebounding (8), while Zakai Zeigler led Tennessee in assists (6).

Tennessee will next play Baylor on Friday in the Baha Mar Championship. Tipoff is slated for 9:30 p.m. EST and will be televised by CBS Sports Network.

Talaysia Cooper earns two weekly basketball awards

Tennessee redshirt sophomore guard named SEC and USBWA Player of the Week.

Tennessee redshirt sophomore guard Talaysia Cooper was named SEC Player of the Week and United States Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week.

Cooper transferred to Tennessee from South Carolina.

She averaged 25.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game in Tennessee’s victories over Middle Tennessee State and Liberty. Cooper recorded a .556 field goal percentage, a .333 three-point field goal percentage and a 100 percent free throw percentage.

She recorded her first collegiate double-double against the Blue Raiders, totaling 18 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in Tennessee’s, 89-75, win.  Cooper also totaled four assists, four steals and one block.

The 6-foot guard totaled 33 points and nine rebounds in a, 109-93, victory against Liberty.

Los Angeles (10-4) defeated Utah, 124-118, on Tuesday in the NBA Cup at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California.

Former Vol Dalton Knecht started and scored a career-high 37 points. He also totaled five rebounds and one steal in 38 minutes against the Jazz.

Knecht converted 12-of-16 field goal attempts, 9-of-12 three-point attempts and 4-of-5 field goal attempts. His nine 3-point field goals tied an NBA single-game rookie record.
