Bashaud Breeland’s outburst was the final strike for a regrettable signing

On Saturday, the Vikings confirmed what we already knew: signing Bashaud Breeland was a mistake.

Minnesota ruled CB Bashaud Breeland as questionable originally for Monday’s game in Chicago. Now, that doesn’t really matter.

The Vikings waived Breeland on Saturday after the cornerback had a verbal altercation today at practice with coaches. He took off his cleats and got into it with multiple teammates who were trying to calm the situation, per Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

“Too much to come back from,” Pelissero wrote on Twitter.

You could say that again. Due to his on-field inconsistency, Breeland was not in the position make any mistakes outside of games. He did that in practice this week. By doing so, the Vikings had no choice but to get rid of him.

When Minnesota made that decision, it confirmed what we already knew: the team signing Breeland originally was a mistake.

He has a PFF grade of 47.2 this year. He has two picks and five passes defended, but his six touchdowns allowed in just 13 games is tied for the most in his career.

Breeland signed late in free agency. Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press reported that Breeland expected to compete for a starting spot out wide.

The cornerback struggled in the preseason. Despite that, he earned the starting position over second-year cornerback Cameron Dantzler, Granted, Dantzler didn’t look great in the preseason, either. But in hindsight, the Vikings could have started Dantzler and let the young corner develop with more experience.

Instead, Minnesota got up-and-down performances from a cornerback who’s no longer on the team. The move to get Breeland could be rationalized at the time — more cornerback depth is never a bad thing. However, knowing what we know now, the Vikings should not have signed Breeland.

I’m not going to get into the off-field stuff too much. Honestly, Breeland’s tweets are funny. And to his credit, he thanked the Vikings for the opportunity on Twitter. But from a performance standpoint, the Vikings didn’t really need Breeland this year. On Saturday, the team simply reaffirmed that.

Former Tiger became ill during Thursday night’s NFL game

A former Clemson standout became ill in Thursday night’s NFL game between the Minnesota Vikings and Pittsburgh Steelers in Minneapolis.

Vikings cornerback Bashaud Breeland, a former All-ACC player at Clemson who played for the Tigers from 2010-13, apparently got sick during Minnesota’s win over Pittsburgh.

Breeland was seen vomiting on the sideline, but Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer told reporters that he hadn’t been feeling ill entering the game. Zimmer said Breeland’s illness came during the game.

Breeland recorded his second interception of the season in the third quarter when he picked off Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and returned it 18 yards to the Pittsburgh 30-yard line, setting up an eventual Vikings field goal that gave them a 29-0 lead with 6:15 left in the third.

Pittsburgh rallied to cut Minnesota’s deficit to 36-28 with less than five minutes remaining in the game, but the Vikings held on to win by that score.

Bashaud Breeland’s stunned face perfectly summed up Vikings nearly blowing a huge lead

This summed it up.

The Minnesota Vikings were coasting, up 29-0 on the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third quarter on Thursday night.

All anyone could talk about was how badly Ben Roethlisberger was struggling and how mediocre the Steelers were.

But then, the Steelers scored 20 straight points. A touchdown from K.J. Osborn appeared to put the game away … but then the Steelers scored again, and it was 36-28.

Vikings fans everywhere were in shock, and then cameras broadcasting the Thursday night matchup found Minnesota cornerback Bashaud Breeland, who was similarly stunned by the comeback that fell just short  (Chase Claypool’s celebration that cost seconds was part of it):

Vikings defensive PFF grades: Best and worst from the loss to the Lions

Which Vikings defensive player stood out in Week 13?

The Lions offense mostly picked apart the Vikings defense on Sunday, like when Detroit QB Jared Goff found WR Amon-Ra St. Brown for the game-winning score.

The Vikings defense has some work to do. Here are the best and worst players from that side of the ball from Week 14:

Just a note: Players on this list needed to play at least 15 snaps in the game against the Lions in order to qualify.

Vikings Friday injury report: One out, one questionable

The Vikings did not have LB Anthony Barr listed on the Friday injury report, at least.

Minnesota received some good and bad news regarding the cornerback unit this week.

The Vikings activated CB Patrick Peterson off IR. Peterson’s absence from the Friday injury report is a good sign. However, the Vikings have to add the corner to their active roster for him to play this week.

The Vikings might need Peterson back now. Minnesota ruled CB Bashaud Breeland as questionable for the Week 11 matchup. The Vikings have been starting Breeland and Cameron Dantzler at the cornerback spots out wide in Peterson’s absence.

Without Peterson and Breeland, the Vikings secondary would face an extremely tough task against the Packers passing attack.

At least LB Anthony Barr was nowhere to be found on the Friday injury report. Barr played in two consecutive games before being ruled out for Week 10. He was still dealing with a knee injury during practice this week.

Minnesota also ruled Wyatt Davis out for the Sunday game at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Vikings PFF grades: Bottom three grades from the win over the Chargers

You’ll be surprised by the Vikings lowest-graded defensive player this week.

The Vikings defense stepped up in Week 10.

Minnesota forced Los Angeles QB Justin Herbert into mistakes on Sunday. The Vikings held tight enough in coverage to come out with the victory.

But Minnesota wasn’t perfect. The Vikings allowed 20 points. PFF graded each Minnesota player on the field. Here were the lowest-graded Vikings players on defense from Week 10:

Note: the Vikings players on this list had to play a minimum of 15 snaps. Players with lower grades who played less than 15 snaps will not be mentioned.

Vikings Week 10 injury report: Thursday remains worrisome for Minnesota

Vikings DT Michael Pierce continues to deal with an elbow injury.

At 3-5, the Vikings could use a full roster to beat the AFC-West-leading Chargers in Week 10 of the 2021 NFL season.

But signs point to that not happening. Minnesota has a lengthy COVID-19/Reserve list currently. Additionally, the Vikings have to deal with injuries throughout practice this week.

In some respects, the Vikings’ Thursday injury report improved a tad, especially when it came to the cornerback position group. However, Minnesota still had some concerning takeaways on the most recent injury report.

Here it is:

Vikings CB Bashaud Breeland questionable to return to Ravens game

Vikings CB Bashaud Breeland is questionable to return to the Week 9 game with a groin injury.

With Patrick Peterson out, the Vikings need their less experienced corners to step up and fill the void.

Minnesota might have to adjust without another corner on Sunday. The Vikings announced that they ruled Minnesota CB Bashaud Breeland questionable to return with a groin injury.

Breeland and Cameron Dantzler are, by far, the team’s best options at cornerback now that Peterson is on IR. Before he left the game, Breeland had a decent showing in Week 9 with an early pass breakup.

Minnesota will go with Kris Boyd mostly if Breeland remains out. The Vikings can also utilize Harrison Hand.

Minnesota is also dealing with an absence in the back end of the secondary.

The Vikings placed Minnesota S Harrison Smith on the COVID-19/Reserve list before the game in Baltimore. Camryn Bynum is starting in place of Smith.

At the time this article was published, the Vikings led the Ravens 14-3 in the second quarter.
