Jac Caglianone signs overslot deal with Kansas City Royals

Former Florida two-way star Jac Caglianone and the Kansas City Royals have officially agreed to terms on a contract.

Former Florida first baseman and left-handed pitcher [autotag]Jac Caglianone[/autotag] has agreed to terms with the Kansas City Royals, according to Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.

Caglianone’s signing bonus is worth $7.5 million, which is $286,200 over the assigned slot value of $7,213,800 for the sixth overall pick.

At publishing time, Caglianone’s deal is the largest over-slot deal in the first round; however, four of the five picks before Caglianone have signed deals worth more money. The lone exception is Wake Forest first baseman Nick Kurtz who signed for $1.37 million under his slot value.

Caglianone entered the draft an expected top-5 pick, but he fell to sixth overall. The big question of him being a two-way player was a lot for teams to consider and reports that Caglianone wanted an over-slot deal might have also lowered his stock.

It’s clear that Cleveland and Oakland wanted to sign well underslot, saving over $1.25 million apiece in the first round. Cincinnati went with Wake Forest right-hander Chase Burns and handed him the largest signing bonus in MLB history — $9.25 million — but it was still an underslot deal.

Would Caglianone have taken that deal? Probably, but this seems more like a case of the Reds wanting a true pitcher — Cags’ bat is better than his arm right now.

Then there’s the Colorado Rockies at No. 3, who went with Georgia outfielder Charlie Condon. The Rockies gave Condon the same bonus as Burns, so this again feels like the team going with the guy they wanted more.

Finally, Arkansas left-hander Hagen Smith signed with the Chicago White Sox for $236,300 as the fifth pick. Caglianone’s deal is almost exactly $50,000 more over the assigned slot value. Smith is still taking home $500,000 more overall, but that figure seems intentional.

Whatever the reason for the slip, Caglianone is now set to begin his professional career. Those five teams listed above may live to regret passing on the former Gator…

Florida baseball adds power-hitting USF transfer via transfer portal

Kevin O’Sullivan has added yet another power bat, former USF infielder Bobby Boser, to Florida’s baseball roster.

Bobby Boser possesses the kind of power that makes elite SEC arms nervous, so it only makes sense for him to finish his college career in the nation’s toughest conference after three years with the South Florida Bulls.

On Wednesday, Boser confirmed his commitment to the Florida Gators.

The three-year Bull was named a 2024 First Team All-Conference selection in the American Athletic despite missing over 22 games with a broken bone in is hand. He batted .299 with 18 extra-base hits, 32 RBI and 28 runs scored.

He leaves USF ranked eighth in program history with 31 career home runs.

Bobby Boser’s fit at Florida

The former USF infielder has a shot to start at Florida, but his position is unclear at this point. A primary middle infielder in Tampa and the Cape Code League this summer, Boser also has experience at first, third and all three outfield positions.

The expectation is for him to land at one of the corner spots. Jacksonville transfer Justin Nadeau and Texas Tech transfer Landon Stripling are his main competition at first and third.

There’s a world where Colby Shelton moves back to third and Boser takes over at short, but it feels unlikely given Shelton’s desire to prove himself at the position — not to mention Shelton was one of the SEC’s best defensive shortstops a season ago.

[autotag]Kevin O’Sullivan[/autotag] has a lot to figure out over the next six months, but power plays in Gainesville and Boser has juice.

Former Gator, New York Mets RHP Christian Scott to IL with elbow sprain

Former Florida right-hander and New York Mets rookie Christian Scott is headed to the injured list with a UCL sprain.

Things were going pretty well for former Florida Gators right-hander [autotag]Christian Scott[/autotag], but his rookie season with the New York Mets just hit a speed bump as he heads to the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 22, with a right UCL sprain.

Scott made his debut in the first week of May only to be sent back to Triple-A in June to keep his innings low — we broke down his MLB debut here. He returned to the Mets on July 3 and most recently pitched on Sunday, surrendering three runs on seven hits over four innings in a start against the Miami Marlins.

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reported that Scott underwent an MRI on Tuesday, adding that the Mets are waiting for multiple doctors to interpret the results before confirming a sprain, rather than a tear.

For now, it’s wait-and-see with Scott. Although, DiComo said it could be a matter of hours before the team knows more. It could also be days, though. At a minimum, Scott is shut down for the next 15 days and the organization will likely exercise extreme caution in bringing him back, even with struggles in the starting rotation.

A UCL sprain does not mean Tommy John surgery is necessary. Scott may avoid going under the knife, but a sprain means that the ligament has stretched or torn to some degree by definition.
