Derrick Henry will head into free agency this offseason after dominating the his competition on the NFL level in 2019. Henry, alongside quarterback Ryan Tannehill, helped the often overlooked Tennessee Titans get to the AFC Championship.

The career year for former Alabama running back consisted of 1,540 yards on the ground off of 303 carries to go along with a whopping 16 rushing touchdowns.

One would expect that after Henry’s impressive 2019 season, he’d be due for a massive pay day, but Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports argues that Tennessee should stay far away from handing Henry a large, new contract.

“Now is not the time to pay Derrick Henry. And, more to the point, there might not ever be the right time to pay him. Especially nowhere close to the degree he is seeking compensation. Frankly, if I were them I wouldn’t even really truly consider it, privately, though I’d never say or do anything to disrespect the player in the process. Henry is everything you could possibly want off the field, as good a young man as you will find. And on the field, he is a beast. He is a monster. I love the way he runs… But he is still a running back, and that is the problem.”

Henry is considered to be one of the top players to hit free agency in the 2020 offseason, and he has expressed his interest in staying with the team that drafted him in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

This year’s draft is quickly approaching, and if Henry decides to sign elsewhere, or if the Titans do not want to offer him a new contract, they may decide to spend their first round draft pick (No. 29 overall) on a new lead back.

That could prove to be costly decision, however.

Former Alabama star wide receiver Amari Cooper has found success with the Dallas Cowboys over the last two seasons since he was traded in 2018 from the Oakland Raiders.

In 2019 Cooper put up an impressive 1,189 yards off of 79 receptions for eight touchdowns and an average of just over 15 yards per catch.

Cooper has put together an outstanding resume since he was drafted by the Oakland Raiders with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

The Biletnikoff winner out of Alabama is now set to hit free agency and his value should be equivalent to some of the top receivers in the league.

NFL.com’s David Carr listed his top-five landing spots for Cooper in 2020 free agency.

Here’s where Carr thinks Cooper would fit in best:

5. Arizona Cardinals

Carr claims that Cooper would be a big help to the 2019 offensive rookie of the year, Kyler Murray. He also believes that Cooper can learn a lot from future Hall of Fame wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

Former Alabama star receiver, and current NFL standout, Julio Jones turns 31 today and everyone is wishing him a happy birthday on Twitter.

The Alabama native has spent the last nine seasons with the Atlanta Falcons after being drafted No. 6 overall in the 2011 NFL Draft.

The receiver turns another year older, but has no plans of slowing down anytime soon.

Here’s what people had to say about Crimson Tide legend Julio Jones on his birthday:

NFL recognizes greatness on No. 11’s birthday!

Star Atlanta Falcons safety Julio Jones.

Birthday wishes from across the pond are always welcome! (he’s laid down some pretty big hits)

All of these impressive numbers and he’s still got gas in the tank!

Will 2020 be Calvin Ridley’s breakout season?

Amari Cooper and Julio Jones are two big names when it comes to former Alabama talent currently in the NFL.

The Crimson Tide is known for producing some heavy hitters all across the field and on both sides of the ball that has gone on to the professional level and made an impact on their respective teams.

Calvin Ridley was a major contributor and a star during his time under Nick Saban, and he’s done a good job of holding his own with the Atlanta Falcons in his two years in the NFL, but it’s time for him to take the next step.

I believe 2020 could very well be the year of Calvin Ridley.

From his rookie season to his sophomore season he improved in many categories, including: targets, yards per catch, total yards and catch percentage – all while plying in three less games in 2019 than he did in 2018.

Jones and Ridley were the only two receivers on the team who were on the field for more than 50% of snaps per game – Jones was on the field for 55.6% of snaps per game and Ridley was in the game for 56.3%.

Ridley is not only playing well alongside Jones, he’s competing for the spot as the teams top receiver, as Ridley had the most amount of receiving touchdowns on the Falcons in 2019.

With two years now under his belt, and enough time to be comfortable with Matt Ryan as his quarterback – for now – it only feels right to expect Ridley to go above and beyond what he’s already shown possible.

He has proven that the Falcons spending a first-round pick on the wide receiver was worth it, but now it’s all about what he can offer the team moving forward.

It’s clear the city of Atlanta is also ready to see what Ridley is going to do in year No. 3. The Falcons released this “hype-tape” on Twitter.

The 2020 NFL Draft is still months away, but the mock draft are hotter than ever, which leads to discussions, arguments and everyday fans become scouts and analysts.

Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports released his most recent mock draft which had seven Alabama players being selected in the first round of the draft.

Fornelli’s mock draft offers a different look than most as he introduced potential trades which impacts where teams will be selecting.

Let’s take a look at where he placed former members of the Crimson Tide.

Sports Illustrated analyst predicts AJ McCarron’s free agency landing spot

Former national championship-winning Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron is set to hit free agency heading into the 2020 NFL regular season.

McCarron has been bounced around the NFL as the “next man up” for the Cincinnati Bengals, who drafted the Crimson Tide product in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Buffalo Bills, Oakland Raiders and most recently the Houston Texans.

Noah Strackbein of Sports Illustrated claimed that McCarron could be the perfect fit as a backup plan to the aging Ben Roethlisberger.

In 2019 Roethlisberger was out for the season after requiring shoulder surgery which forced a couple of young quarterbacks to step in and help the Steelers finish with a record of 8-8.

Mason Rudolph may be the guy for Pittsburgh moving forward, as he stepped up when Roethlisberger went down, but he suffered an injury of his own.

McCarron may be just what head coach Mike Tomlin is looking for in a No. 2 quarterback.

The career backup has had to fill in for some big names in the past and is most likely not afraid to do it in the AFC North.

Alabama’s NFL Freak of the Year Awards

To wrap up the season, fans got to vote for an offensive and defensive Freak of the Year.

For the 2019-2020 NFL season, I posted a weekly “Freak of the week” which was a weekly poll on the Alabama football twitter account, that let fans vote for an NFL offensive and defensive freak of the week from the previous week’s matchups.

Heading into the NFL Honors for the 2019 season it seemed as if the Offensive Rookie of the Year award was between two worthy candidates: Josh Jacobs, former Alabama running back now leading the charge for the Raiders, and AJ Brown, the former Ole Miss wide receiver now a star on the Titans.

However, the award was given to former Heisman-winning quarterback out of Oklahoma, Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals.

Many NFL fans have taken to Twitter to voice their dissatisfaction with Murray being named the recipient, heres what they had to say:

NBC getting in on the action, calling it “a slight.”

I’d say this was the face of many NFL fans around the league.

We can’t figure this one out either, Vincent.

Stephen A. Smith’s reaction may very well be all of ours.

Maybe it’s time to bring back the replacement refs?

PFF bringing some stats to the conversation.

Bold prediction right here for the 2020 season.

Former Alabama star wide receiver has found himself a good home in Dallas after being traded from the Oakland Raiders for a first round pick in the middle of the 2018 season.

Now, he is set to be a free agent heading into the 2020 regular season.

He has openly expressed his happiness with being a Dallas Cowboy, but things are subject to change when hearing offers from other teams.

“I’m just taking it day by day,” Cooper said Thursday after Pro Bowl practice. “I don’t really feel like there’s nothing that’s imminent. I’m not anxious, I’m not apprehensive. I’m just living life.”

There certainly is no rush when it comes to deciding where he will be playing by August of 2020.

“I don’t think it’s all about money,” Cooper said. “… If you’re a highly touted free agent, you’re going to get paid a lot of money no matter where you go. Is it worth it to go somewhere that you probably don’t want to go as far as, you might be a guy like me who’s from South Florida who’s never played a game in the snow?”

Cooper certainly has the right mentality about his situation, valuing the location, team and environment over a paycheck.

Roll Tide Wire will keep you updated all things ‘Bama in the NFL’ related and their free agency signings.
