Ravens vs. Cowboys injury report: Baltimore banged up in Week 13

The Baltimore Ravens are still facing injuries in Week 13, with a handful of players listed as questionable against the Dallas Cowboys

The Baltimore Ravens are finally past their awful Week 12 in which the game was rescheduled three separate times following an outbreak of COVID-19. While they’re still licking their wounds and getting players back from the Reserve/COVID-19 list, the Ravens are chugging forward, with eyes on the Dallas Cowboys this week.

This game, just like last week, will be played on an odd day. As a part of the constant rescheduling of Week 12, Baltimore’s Week 13 game against Dallas has been moved to Tuesday. But unlike last week, the Ravens will have far more of their team against the Cowboys.

Baltimore has already returned several players from the Reserve/COVID-19 list over the last few days, including defensive end Calais Campbell and running back J.K. Dobbins. Though quarterback Lamar Jackson still remains on the list, the Ravens are already in far better position right now than they were on Wednesday against Pittsburgh. But just because Baltimore is getting players back from the coronavirus protocols, it doesn’t mean everyone’s perfectly healthy.

Take a look at Saturday’s injury report for both the Ravens and Cowboys, as well as the final game status for Tuesday’s kickoff.

Ravens CB Jimmy Smith questionable to return with groin injury

The Baltimore Ravens are down another cornerback as Jimmy Smith limped off the field with a groin injury against the Steelers.

The Baltimore Ravens can ill afford to have any injuries in this game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. After putting 23 players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list over the last 10 days and seeing this game rescheduled three separate times, Baltimore is understandably short-handed today. And things got just a little worse for the Ravens as cornerback Jimmy Smith limped to the sideline. A few minutes later and Baltimore announced Smith is questionable to return to the game with a groin injury.

The Ravens cornerback unit was already thin entering this week, seeing several players head to injured reserve. But the starting lineup wasn’t much affected by Baltimore’s COVID-19 outbreak. Still, losing Smith for any period of time would be a big blow for a defense that is desperately trying to limit a high-powered Steelers offense and give the Ravens’ offense good field position.

Ravens to be without Mark Ingram, J.K. Dobbins vs. Steelers

The Baltimore Ravens will have to lean on Gus Edwards against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday with J.K. Dobbins and Mark Ingram out.

The Baltimore Ravens are down 16 players, who are on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. There was some hope Baltimore could get running backs Mark Ingram and J.K. Dobbins off the list and suited up today, but it looks like that won’t happen. According to Sunday Night Football’s Michele Tafoya and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, neither Dobbins nor Ingram will be available Wednesday.

That really shouldn’t come as much of a shock. They’re still currently on the Reserve/COVID-19 list and while 10 days have technically passed, making them potentially eligible to return to the 53-man roster, there’s a lot that goes into such a decision. For one, Ingram and Dobbins would have to test negative and not be showing any symptoms in order to come off the Reserve/COVID-19 list under the NFL’s protocols. Secondly, they haven’t been on a practice field in over a week while dealing with the coronavirus, which is surely going to limit them initially.

With both Ingram and Dobbins out, the lead-back duties will likely fall to Gus Edwards. Among the four running backs on Baltimore’s roster, Edwards ranks second in total yards, falling just behind Dobbins. But Edwards has been a Steelers killer in the past, having gained 244 rushing yards on 43 carries — good enough for a 5.7 yards-per-carry average. That includes his last two outings in which Edwards gained 87 rushing yards and a touchdown in Week 8 and 130 rushing yards in Week 17 last year.

Ravens have 2 new positive COVID-19 tests Tuesday, game still on

The Baltimore Ravens now have had 10 consecutive days with positive COVID-19 tests after seeing another player and staff member test Tuesday

The Baltimore Ravens are set to play the Pittsburgh Steelers in less than 24 hours and they learned of one new player and one new staff member who tested positive for COVID-19. In fact, the news is so new that the players were informed of the positive tests while on the airplane to fly to Pittsburgh, according to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic.

Worst yet, the positive player had practiced with the team over the last two days as they held socially-distant walkthroughs in preparation for Wednesday’s game against Pittsburgh. Baltimore had not practiced since last Monday when they learned of the first two positive cases — running backs Mark Ingram and J.K. Dobbins. The Ravens haven’t had a single day since that hasn’t seen a player or staff member test positive.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Ravens’ game against the Steelers is still on for Wednesday.

Ravens activate rookie Tyre Phillips from injured reserve

The Baltimore Ravens activated rookie guard Tyre Phillips from injured reserve as they desperately need the help on the offensive line.

The Baltimore Ravens made a bunch of moves to their roster on Monday, including adding four more players to the Reserve/COVID-19 list and activating four from it. In addition to all the COVID-19 related moves, the Ravens also announced they’re activating rookie guard Tyre Phillips from injured reserve.

Phillips initially went on injured reserve after suffering an ankle injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers. While the injury wasn’t considered to be season-ending, the Ravens put Phillips on injured reserve to free up a roster spot with the ability for him to return to the 53-man roster after three weeks.

Though he didn’t play well in the starting lineup, the Ravens were looking at not having enough players to field a complete offensive and defensive line against the Steelers on Tuesday. With both injuries and COVID-19 ravaging Baltimore’s offensive line, Phillips will be a welcome addition to the team again, even if he doesn’t necessarily start immediately.

Ravens down 30 players due to injuries, COVID-19 right now

As it stands right now, the Baltimore Ravens wouldn’t have enough players to field a starting lineup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Baltimore Ravens have been absolutely ravaged by injuries and COVID-19 this season. It’s caused the Ravens’ schedule to be adjusted several times, both for their own outbreak and for the Tennessee Titans’ outbreak. But with another six players going on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday, it’s gotten to a ridiculous level that has to be seen in a different way to be believed.

When accounting for injured reserve (both the practice squad injury and non-football injury lists, as well as normal injured reserve) and the Reserve/COVID-19 list, the Ravens are currently missing 30 players including 20 due to the coronavirus. Considering NFL rosters are just 53 players (69 if you include the practice squad), it’s apparent Baltimore is missing the majority of the team it started the season with.

Here’s what the depth chart on offense and defense looks like right now, barring any future moves:

Position 1st 2nd 3rd
QB Robert Griffin III
RB Gus Edwards Justice Hill
FB
TE Mark Andrews
WR1 Willie Snead IV Dez Bryant Miles Boykin
WR2 Marquise Brown Devin Duvernay James Proche II
LT Orlando Brown Jr.
LG Bradley Bozeman
C Trystan Colon-Castillo
RG Ben Powers
RT

Position 1st 2nd 3rd
DT
NT Justin Ellis
DE Derek Wolfe
RUSH Yannick Ngakoue
MLB Patrick Queen Chris Board Kristian Welch
WLB L.J. Fort / Malik Harrison
SAM Matthew Judon Tyus Bowser
LCB Marcus Peters Jimmy Smith
SS Chuck Clark Anthony Levine Sr.
FS DeShon Elliott Jordan Richards Geno Stone
RCB Marlon Humphrey Tramon Williams

That’s less than ideal, to put it nicely. If Week 12’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers were to happen right this minute, Baltimore wouldn’t be able to field a complete starting lineup, much less a game-ready roster.

Even if the Ravens were to bring up every player on the practice squad, they would just barely be able to put a starting lineup on the field. Defensive tackle Aaron Crawford would start in Calais Campbell’s spot and R.J. Prince be the new starting right tackle. Even then, a single injury to either the offensive or defense lines would put Baltimore right back to not having enough players to start.

While there’s a chance some players could be coming back from the Reserve/COVID-19 list in the coming days, it seems like a near-impossible task to still play this game on Tuesday with the roster looking like this. With the potential for more positive tests in the next few days, the pressure is on the NFL to have a backup plan ready.

Ravens place 6 more players on Reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday, including D.J. Fluker

The Ravens added six more players to the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday, including D.J. Fluker, making the offensive line even thinner

The Baltimore Ravens have not had a single day without a player and/or staff member testing positive for COVID-19. That trend continued on Saturday, marking the sixth consecutive day of the Ravens’ COVID-19 outbreak growing. According to the team’s Twitter account, they’ve placed the following six players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list:

  • OLB Jaylon Ferguson
  • OL D.J. Fluker
  • OL Will Holden
  • DT Broderick Washington Jr.
  • CB Tavon Young
  • CB Khalil Dorsey

Baltimore placed four more players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, bringing the total to 14 total players on the list prior to these latest additions.

Though players like Dorsey and Young were on injured reserve already, negating some of the impact it’ll have on the team immediately, that’s not the case with everyone. With Fluker and Holden going on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, Baltimore is really thin along an offensive line that is already dealing with two starters on injured reserve.

The NFL has already postponed Baltimore’s Week 12 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers twice and moved its Week 13 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys as well. With the Ravens continuing to see people test positive for COVID-19, it creates some doubt about Tuesday’s game against the Steelers.

Players who test positive for COVID-19 are held out a minimum of 10 days per the NFL’s protocols. Those that are considered a close contact during the league’s contact tracing following a positive test are held out a minimum of five days. Since the Ravens have been battling this outbreak all week, there’s the potential some players added early in the week could be eligible to play Tuesday against Pittsburgh. However, positive tests would not only miss Tuesday’s game but potentially miss Week 13’s game against Dallas as well.

Steelers player, coach test positive for COVID-19 Saturday

The Pittsburgh Steelers seem to be in the midst of a COVID-19 outbreak of their own, seeing more people test positive Saturday.

The Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers can’t catch a break this week. At the beginning of the week, the Ravens were firmly in the midst of a COVID-19 outbreak, seeing multiple players and/or staff members test positive every day. Now with Baltimore hopefully starting to get their outbreak under control, it appears the Steelers are just starting one of their own.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Aditi Kinkhabwala, Pittsburgh had multiple a player and coach test positive for COVID-19 on Saturday with multiple close contacts as well. The Steelers placed three players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Friday, bringing their total to four players. With an influx of new positive tests Saturday, that number will grow as tests are confirmed and contact tracing is done. The Ravens have 14 players of their own on the Reserve/COVID-19 list with more likely to be added in the coming days as those tests are confirmed.

The NFL has already rescheduled the Ravens vs. Steelers Week 12 game twice this week. Originally scheduled to play on Thanksgiving night, the game was moved to Sunday afternoon before being moved to Tuesday. With both teams continuing to see positive tests into the weekend, the NFL might have a tough decision to make about whether to play this game in spite of the outbreak or to switch to a backup plan of some type.

Ravens vs. Steelers injury report: CB Jimmy Smith returns Friday

The Baltimore Ravens’ injury report for Friday is just an estimation but cornerback Jimmy Smith was estimated to return to practice.

The Baltimore Ravens will now take on the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday following the NFL rescheduling their Week 12 game for the second time this week. As both teams have put players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, their respective injury reports aren’t quite as bad as they could be.

Though the Ravens have closed their training facility this week, making the injury reports estimations only, the extra rest time has been beneficial for Baltimore especially. Cornerback Jimmy Smith was estimated to return to practice on Friday after missing the last four days due to an ankle injury. With the Ravens having 14 players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, having every available starter as healthy as possible is a necessity if Baltimore wants to be competitive against Pittsburgh Tuesday.

Take a look at the Ravens’ and Steelers’ injury reports for Friday below:

Ravens have more positive COVID-19 tests Thursday

The Baltimore Ravens continue to deal with the COVID-19 outbreak, seeing more positive tests Thursday.

For the fourth-consecutive day, the Baltimore Ravens have had positive COVID-19 tests, though it’s unclear exactly how many right now. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a coach tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday. However, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said there was at least one player and several staff members who tested positive Thursday.

This is a continuation of the outbreak that has had the Ravens place nine players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Baltimore has also seen their Week 12 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers postponed from Thanksgiving night until Sunday afternoon. Under the NFL’s protocols, any players that test positive for the coronavirus will have to miss a minimum of 10 days while those labeled as “close contact” have a minimum of a five-day wait until they can return.

The Ravens have disciplined a strength and conditioning coach for conduct related to the outbreak that included not wearing a mask or the tracker used for contact tracing.
