Report: Ravens cut UDFA QB Tyler Huntley

The Baltimore Ravens are cutting UDFA quarterback Tyler Huntley, making way for Trace McSorley to make the Ravens’ 53-man roster again.

The Baltimore Ravens continue to make their cuts as they look to create the best 53-man roster possible for the regular season. That means trimming back at the most important position on the team: quarterback.

According to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic, the Ravens have cut undrafted free agent quarterback Tyler Huntley. The move comes as a bit of a shock since Huntley had been outplaying Trace McSorley throughout training camp, showing off a big arm and accuracy to go along with his mobility.

Baltimore coach John Harbaugh indicated the team was likely to keep three quarterbacks on the roster yet again this season. This bucks a tradition of keeping just two on the roster in previous years. However, with primary backup quarterback Robert Griffin III in the final year of his contract and having said he wants to start again, the third quarterback would seemingly be groomed to be Lamar Jackson’s backup as early as next year. The decision was too close to call heading toward the deadline with McSorley’s experience likely winning out over Huntley’s offseason play.

The decision to cut Huntley is yet another blow to the Ravens’ chances of keeping a UDFA on the team. Huntley and safety Nigel Warrior seemingly had the best chances of making Baltimore’s 53-man roster, but have been cut with a chance to return on the practice squad. The coronavirus pandemic has made it harder for undrafted players to make the team this season, potentially breaking a 16-year streak of the Ravens keeping at least one UDFA on the 53-man roster.

Ravens cut 3 players, place DeAndrew White on IR ahead of 53-man roster deadline

With less than a week before the Baltimore Ravens roster needs to be trimmed to 53 players, the team made some early moves

The Baltimore Ravens are entering regular-season mode this week as they transition out of training camp and turn their focus on their Week 1 opponent, the Cleveland Browns. Part of that transition is trimming down their roster from 80 players to 53 ahead of Saturday’s deadline. Though there will be some really tough decisions that will likely come down to the wire, some are going to be far easier. That’s the case as Baltimore has already begun trimming their roster well ahead of the deadline, making three cuts on Monday.

According to the Ravens, they’ve waived outside linebacker John Daka, wide receiver Michael Dereus, and center Sean Pollard. The team also placed wide receiver DeAndrew White on injured reserve. The moves take Baltimore down to 76 players on the roster, with another 23 left to make over the next five days.

All three cuts were expected considering they were undrafted free agents who signed with the Ravens following the 2020 NFL Draft. Dereus and Pollard had an uphill battle to make the team with Baltimore selecting two wide receivers and two offensive linemen in April’s draft on top of the already impressive depth on the roster.

Daka was one of three UDFA outside linebackers the Ravens brought in this offseason. With limited depth behind Matthew Judon and the team not using one of their 10 picks in the 2020 NFL Draft to address the position, the UDFAs were expected to have a better than average chance of making Baltimore’s 53-man roster. While Daka is among the first cuts, this could be a case where the Ravens are hoping to sneak him through to their practice squad where they can continue his development this season for another shot next year.

White was signed just last week following a workout that also included wide receiver Dez Bryant. White quickly impressed Harbaugh, earning a positive review of his first day in a Ravens uniform.

“He looked good out there today, didn’t he? He came out about halfway through practice – maybe before that – and jumped out and made a couple catches,” Harbaugh said following White’s first practice. “So, he looked good. I had a chance to chat with him briefly after practice. He’s in great spirits. He’s appreciative of the opportunity.”

White joins cornerback Iman Marshall and wide receiver Antoine Wesley on Baltimore’s injured reserve list.

8 UDFAs most likely to make Ravens’ 53-man roster

The Baltimore Ravens have a history of finding gold in their UDFA class. But which ones can really make the Ravens’ roster in 2020?

The Baltimore Ravens’ front office has earned a reputation for being one the best in the NFL, scouting and drafting star talent over the years. But perhaps their best work has been done after the draft, with the undrafted free agents.

The Ravens have a history of finding diamonds in the rough with their UDFA classes. Stars have been born from the group, from linebacker Bart Scott to kicker Justin Tucker, Baltimore has gotten quite a lot of value from the forgotten draft prospects. Entering this offseason, the Ravens have had at least one UDFA make the 53-man roster for the last 16 consecutive years.

With the 2020 NFL Draft over, Baltimore brought in 21 UDFAs to fight for roster spots. While some are pretty clearly training camp fodder, others have a legitimate chance of making the cut and extending the Ravens’ streak. Whether it’s from outstanding talent or being at a more shallow position, these eight players have the best shot of making the Ravens’ 53-man roster in 2020.

TE Jacob Breeland

With the trade of Hayden Hurst to the Atlanta Falcons, there’s a third spot on Baltimore’s tight end depth chart. Obviously, Nick Boyle and Mark Andrews are in the first two spots but Charles Scarff is far from a lock to make the team as the third option, even if he was on the practice squad with the Ravens last year. With a competition brewing at tight end, Breeland has the experience and college production to point to him being in the mix.

Breeland had his best season at Oregon in 2019, despite playing in just six games. He caught 26 passes for 405 yards and six touchdowns, proving he’s a pretty effective weapon. He’s got a big frame at 6-foot-5 and 252 pounds, and with solid hands, Breeland is a good option in the receiving game. While his blocking isn’t the worst I’ve ever seen, he’ll be more useful as a chip-blocker before going out for a route.

The biggest knock against Breeland is that he’s coming off a season-ending injury, tearing his ACL and meniscus, requiring surgery. Though he had to miss the NFL Scouting Combine, he suffered the injury in October, which means he could still be healthy enough to really compete for the roster spot at training camp.

Ravens waive S Bennett Jackson

The Baltimore Ravens freed up a roster spot by waiving safety Bennett Jackson, potentially making room for Brynden Trawick to return from IR

The Baltimore Ravens sit at 10-2 and atop the AFC playoff picture. But they’re not satisfied with their roster as it stands right now. So as they enter Week 14 and prepare to take on the Buffalo Bills, they’re altering their 53-man roster a bit.

According to the team’s Twitter account, Baltimore waived safety Bennett Jackson.

While there’s no fellow roster decision to immediately fill Jackson’s spot, it’s likely to make room for safety Brynden Trawick, who is eligible to return from injured reserve this week.

Jackson has primarily been used as depth this season after the Ravens saw injuries to safeties Tony Jefferson and DeShon Elliott as well as injuries to cornerbacks Tavon Young and Jimmy Smith. Jackson was signed to the roster for Week 7 but has been active for just four of the six games he’s been with the team, playing mostly on special teams.

Trawick suffered an elbow injury in Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals. While Baltimore kept him on the 53-man roster, subsequent defensive lapses saw the Ravens need the roster space to make some additions in Week 5, sending Trawick to injured reserve after two weeks.
