Moneyline

Tampa is great at home, but Baltimore is great on the road. And there’s no way we’re going with the -175 ML. Glasnow’s numbers against Baltimore are awesome, but he hasn’t faced them since 2020, and this is a much different team. PASS on the ML.

One prop that I want to key in on involves Bradish. He has given up 5+ ER in both career starts against Tampa and has not fanned 6 in either. He has fanned 6 just once in his last 6 starts overall. Tampa is 14th at 8.48 K’s/game. KYLE BRADISH UNDER 5.5 K’S (-135) seems like a win.

Run line/Against the spread

If Bradish can keep the crooked numbers to a minimum, I think the Orioles have a shot to take this one. Baltimore has a better pen with the 6th-ranked 3.53 ERA vs. Tampa’s 15th-ranked 3.94 ERA.

Lyles, while he has allowed just 3 ER in his last 3 starts, he has an ERA near 6 on the road. Rasmussen, while good at home, has an ERA over 4 against Baltimore this season. That tells me there will be runs scored early.

Wells has a 33.3% K-rate in 30 plate appearances vs. active Rays hitters with a .100/.154/.114 expected batting average, wOBA and slugging percentage slash line and an 81.2 mph exit velocity, according to Statcast.

Finally, Baltimore’s bullpen has a better WAR (4.4-1.5), FIP (4.03-3.62) and home run per 9-inning rate (1.12-0.82) than the Rays, per FanGraphs.

The Orioles +1.5 (-205) are too expensive but appropriately priced considering they are 52-27 RL as underdogs whereas the Rays -1.5 (+165) are 21-37 RL as favorites.

Over/Under

BET a half-unit on the UNDER 7.5 (-120) since Baltimore’s ML is my favorite look in this game.

But, there’s a “Pros vs. Joe’s” scenario shaping the betting market with nearly two-thirds of the money on the Under while more than 60% of the bets placed are on the Over, per Pregame.com. Since professionals wager a lot more dough than your average Joe, following the money is the sharp play.

More importantly, I’d argue both ballclubs’ pitching staffs play more of a role in their winning records than the lineups.

Even if the lefty is able to keep Tampa contained, the bullpen battle should favor the 100-win team.

At the plate Tampa was one of the best hitting teams against left-handed pitchers in the American League in 2021; Baltimore was the worst.

Sure, this is a new season, but not a lot has changed between these two clubs. The Rays were 15-4 ATS versus the Orioles last season.

It’s the first game of the year and there could be surprises in store for us so don’t get carried away, but consider a partial-unit play on the RAYS -1.5 (+115).

PASS.

Means did manage to keep the Rays under wraps in two of his five starts last season, but more importantly he was much sharper in the first half of the season and all five of his Rays meetings came after the break. The Orioles lefty recorded a 2.28 ERA in 12 first-half starts, in contrast to a 4.88 ERA in 14 starts after the All-Star break. It’s risky business to get behind him being lit up, necessarily.

As heavily as the Rays are favored against the Orioles, I’m not touching the money line in this game. At -400, there’s very little upside in betting on the Rays to win outright, and I’m nowhere near confident the Orioles will upset Tampa Bay on the road, having lost eight straight to the Rays.

PASS on the money line and instead bet on the spread.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Rays have won eight in a row against the Orioles and covered the spread seven times in that span. Overall, the Orioles have lost 14 games in a row to sink even further below .500 on the year.

Lopez allowed only 2 runs over 6 innings last time he faced the Rays, but Tampa Bay still wound up winning that game 9-6. I like the RAYS -2.5 (-120) to cover the spread and win by at least 3 runs Thursday.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Over/Under is 8.5 runs as the high-powered Rays lineup takes on a struggling starter. The total went Over the projected line in each of the last eight games between these teams and it is 68-50-3 in Rays games this season.

Tampa Bay shouldn’t have much trouble putting up runs against Lopez, as they scored 14 runs in the two games he started against them this season. Bet the OVER 8.5 (-135).
