Baker Mayfield stresses the significance of their upcoming Bye Week

Players, especially Baker Mayfield, know how important the timing of the Bye Week is for everyone.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been on a tough stretch in recent weeks and are heading into their Bye Week, having lost four straight games. Just a few weeks ago, the team was atop the NFC South, and now they are just one game away from being at the bottom.

Players, especially Baker Mayfield, know how important the timing of the Bye Week is for everyone.

Speaking to the media post-game, Baker Mayfield preached the importance of taking the Bye Week to get healthy as a team. He also mentioned that the Bucs have the fight and will to win; they just have to show it.

Last week, it was Todd Bowles saying that the team can get used to losing but the play is showing they have been complacent. A bye week coming right now is perfect in more ways than one and as Mayfield points out, getting healthy is step one in correcting things.

5 key takeways from the Bucs 23-20 loss to the 49ers

In a game that was not nearly as close as the scoreboard would indicate, here are 5 key takeaways as the Bucs continue to look for answers.

In what was sort of a midseason battle of attrition of under-performing teams between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and San Francisco 49ers, the Buccaneers once again fell short, this time in regulation as Jake Moody hit a game-winning FG as the clock expired.

In a game that was not nearly as close as the scoreboard would indicate, here are 5 key takeaways as the Buccaneers continue to look for answers following their fourth-straight loss.

The Buccaneers are not built for close games

Close games are traditionally won by out-coaching your opposition. Todd Bowles is unable to do that and has proven it time and time again. Whether it is poor clock management or just simply playing without a killer instinct and playing to win, Bowles is overstaying his welcome among fans. Offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who would be the front-runner to take over the team should the Buccaneers make the unlikely midseason move at head coach, has continued to show flashes of great calling, followed by headscratchers. On the season, the Buccaneers

Bucky Irvin should be RB1 from now on

Of that headscratcher, as mentioned above, decisions would be why the Buccaneers have not named rookie RB Bucky Irving the clear-cut RB1 after routinely out-gaining Rachaad White on running plays. White is dynamic in the passing game; however, splitting nearly 50% of carries every week is less than ideal as Irving is not only the team leader in rushing yards but out-gains White by over a yard per carry, which is a lot considering how close the Buccaneers games have been as of late.

Defense is poorly indescribable

Injuries be damned. Players get hurt weekly, and there is no excuse for how poor this Buccaneers defense is, especially with the number of self-inflicted wounds we see weekly. That falls back on coaching. Bowles continued odd-man substitutions rarely allow for his best players to be on the field at the same time, namely on the defensive line. In last week’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Yaya Diaby, Vita Vea, and Calijah Kancey all saw more than 55% of defensive snaps, which was the highest for all three players all season. Antoine Winfield Jr. has to put 120% effort into every play, not to account for a lack of talent but for a lack of effort from his teammates, which is a recipe for disaster as the season progresses.

The lack of depth at WR should’ve been addressed

The NFL trade deadline came and went, and all the while, the Buccaneers were missing superstar WRs Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. This left Mayfield solely to rely on a young and unproven wide receiver corps, as Jason Licht and the Bucs front office chose to stand pat and not make a move. TE Cade Otton has emerged as Mayfield’s favorite–and most reliable– target over the last several weeks; outside of Otton and the Bucs running backs being utilized in the passing game, it’s become a total crapshoot if and when someone else will step up. Luckily for the Buccaneers, Mayfield continues to toe the line as an outlier in the MVP conversation. Evans will likely return following the bye, which should help open up the offense more.

Bucs playoff hopes dwindling

Per The Athletic, the Buccaneers entered Week 10 with only a 21% chance of making the playoffs, and with another NFC loss to a team in the Wild Card picture, that only makes things harder. Five of the remaining seven games are against fellow NFC teams, making each a must-win bout. As the Bucs enter the bye week, they will look to address some of the problems in hopes of shoring up the defense. In Week 12, the Buccaneers will play against the New York Giants, who have been a mess all season, with the caveat that Bowles has never won a game following a Bye Week.

49ers may face Buccaneers QB making 1st-career start

Baker Mayfield missed the first two practices of the week for the Buccaneers.

The San Francisco 49ers may not be the most banged up team when they visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10.

While the 49ers’ practice participation report features a slew of names, Tampa Bay’s is also crowded and includes star wide receiver Mike Evans. Their other star WR, Chris Godwin, is already on IR for the season because of an ankle injury.

Most notable on Tampa Bay’s participation reports from Wednesday and Thursday was the inclusion of quarterback Baker Mayfield. He’s dealing with a toe injury that kept him out of both of the Buccaneers’ practices to start the week.

Mayfield on Wednesday told Bucs reporters in a press conference he’s “a little sore,” but also noted he expects to play Sunday.

If Mayfield is unable to go, the Buccaneers would turn to third-year signal caller Kyle Trask for his first-career start.

Trask was a second-round pick by Tampa Bay in the 2018 draft out of Florida. Across three seasons he has played in four games and thrown only 10 passes. He’s 3-for-10 for 22 yards. His only snaps this season came in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders when he took the two kneel downs to close out a 37-20 Buccaneers win.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan would surely love to avoid Mayfield, a player he said he wasn’t eager to face in the NFC championship game last season. Mayfield is even better this year than he was a season ago. He’s leading the NFL with 23 touchdown passes while completing 71.4 percent of his throws and averaging a career-best 7.6 yards per attempt.

Sunday’s game is one the 49ers need badly. It becomes an even bigger must-win if they’re facing a first-time starting quarterback.

Seahawks QB Geno Smith is still the NFL’s passing yards leader

Seahawks QB Geno Smith is still the NFL’s passing yards leader

The NFL is the ultimate “what have you done for me lately?” league, and unfortunately, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith had the worst possible timing for his worst game of the year. Throwing three interceptions – including one returned 103-yards for a touchdown – in a 26-20 overtime loss to the Rams is the last game on memory for the 12th Man and the rest of the league.

However, despite his poor showing (one where he actually openly apologized), he is still having a strong season. No, his touchdown and interception numbers are not looking great. Smith has 11 touchdowns against 10 interceptions… and while I will argue not all have been his fault, as a quarterback you sign the check with every pass you throw.

Still, despite playing behind easily the worst offensive line in the league and dealing with an inconsistent rushing attack, Smith remains atop the NFL when it comes to passing yards. Smith has thrown for 2,560 yards this year. Right behind him is Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield, who has 2,389 yards. With Smith on a bye week, he is likely to be overtaken in this category, at least temporarily.

While it is impressive, I do want to mention the inconsistent rushing attack once more. Seattle’s offense is not an air raid one. This is a team that wants to run the ball effectively… but has failed to do so. Smith’s passing yards have been less by design, and more by necessity. If the Seahawks want to turn their season around following their Bye Week, they must find a way to become less reliant on his arm and find some balance offensively.

Baker Mayfield says he didn’t push for a two-point conversion against the Chiefs

On Wednesday, Baker Mayfield told the media that he was not pushing for them to go for two either.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming off a disappointing loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football. The game made it to overtime because of the final drive, which was led by Baker Mayfield and the Bucs’ offense.

Coach Todd Bowles’s decision to go for two was controversial. On Wednesday, Baker Mayfield told the media that he was not pushing for them to go for two either.

“I didn’t lobby for it. Hindsight is 20/20 when you look at it. [We] had a little momentum there on the long drive, they were gassed a little bit but yeah, hindsight is 20/20. You’re hoping to win the coin toss. I’m not a fan of the overtime rules. Obviously it’s gotten us twice now so yeah, overtime rules – not the best.”

Fans and players alike have long disdained the overtime rules. While a change is likely, the Bucs’ approach to them could be tweaked much more easily.

Why 49ers were worried about facing Buccaneers in NFC championship game

Kyle Shanahan: Big Baker Mayfield guy.

The San Francisco 49ers punched their ticket to Super Bowl LVIII with a thrilling NFC championship game victory over the Detroit Lions.

While the Lions’ sensational first-half performance forced a dramatic comeback by the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium, Detroit nearly didn’t get out of the divisional playoffs after an eight-point victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Wednesday told reporters he wasn’t excited about the prospect of facing the Buccaneers and quarterback Baker Mayfield.

“I think Baker is a stud,” Shanahan said. “I think last year, I thought he was at the top of his game last year playing real well and this year I think he’s the same, if not better. I think he’s one of the main reasons I think they were a couple plays away from playing us in the NFC Championship last year. We were worried, real worried about him going into that game. He just got hotter as the whole year went. And he’s playing at such a high level right now.”

The 49ers saw Mayfield up close in Week 11 last season. He completed 29-of-45 throws for 246 yards with one touchdown and one interception in a 27-14 San Francisco victory at Levi’s Stadium. The numbers weren’t great, but he made some sensational throws in that game that helped paint a picture of what he might be capable of in a better offense.

This year, Buccaneers new offensive coordinator Liam Coen has gotten the most out of Mayfield. Even without his top two wide receivers, Mayfield managed to go into Kansas City in Week 9 and go 23-of-31 for 200 yards and two touchdowns.

Shanahan was worried about facing Mayfield in January, but now in Week 10 the 49ers will have to face him with their chances of playing next January hanging in the balance.

Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie discusses support from teammates: ‘We’ve got your back’

Kansas City #Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie discusses support from teammates: ‘We’ve got your back’ | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs’ overtime victory last Monday night over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers featured a rare bend moment from the defense. Baker Mayfield completed a game-tying touchdown pass in regulation to force the extra session and a moment of regret from an All-Pro defensive back.

Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie revealed to reporters on Wednesday his frustrations and the support he received from teammates after the Buccaneers scored the tying touchdown on his watch.

“B-Cook (Bryan Cook), J-Reid (Justin Reid) (and) Chamarri (Conner) came over there while I was ticked off that I allowed the score that (allowed) them tie the game,” said McDuffie. “They’re just like, ‘Look, bro, it’s going into overtime. We’ve still got more games. Don’t worry about it. We’ve got your back; we know what you can do.”

McDuffie and the defense had an impressive streak of ending games on their end this season but were bailed out for once in overtime as the offense scored a touchdown on their initial possession.

“For me, that was just a way to kind of lock back in, and also just be like, ‘Man, that’s special, to be in a locker room where guys, you give up a big play in the game, said McDuffie. “I think that kind of speaks volumes as to the character of what we have in here.”

The strong bond between the defense and the team has contributed enormously to the team’s undefeated start to the season.

Bucs QB Baker Mayfield addresses the biggest problem the 49ers present

Look for Liam Coen to scheme in some passing plays that get the ball out quicker than normal as a result.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are looking to get above .500 on Sunday when they snap their losing streak to the San Francisco 49ers. Baker Mayfield spoke to the media on Wednesday about the importance of the game and the issues their defense presents them.

“Pass rush – it starts up front. Obviously, [Nick] Bosa, unbelievable player, [we] have to know where he’s at and then you know, they brought in Leonard Floyd who’s a great player as well that has his own production. The way they rush the passer, they’re jetting up field, that’s their system – they teach those guys to rush straight up field and so [we] have to know that, have to be able to protect up front and get the ball out. . .”

Nick Bosa and Leonard Floyd have a combined 5.5 sacks on the season and 44 quarterback hurries between them. They generate a lot of pressure that can cause problems for the Bucs offense.

Look for Liam Coen to scheme in some passing plays that get the ball out quicker than normal as a result.

Final score: Chiefs sink Buccaneers 30-24 in overtime on ‘Monday Night Football’

The Kansas City #Chiefs defeated the Tampa Bay #Buccaneers 30-24 in overtime on “Monday Night Football.”

The Kansas City Chiefs advanced their record to 8-0 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on “Monday Night Football” in Week 9, winning the Super Bowl LV rematch 30-24 in overtime.

The Chiefs trailed Tampa Bay 10-17 heading into the fourth quarter but mounted a late-game comeback led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes to remain undefeated heading into Week 10.

Mahomes threw for 291 yards, tossed three touchdown passes, and completed 34 of his 44 attempts. Star tight end Travis Kelce led Kansas City in receiving yards, but it was newly-acquired wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins who stole the show with two touchdown catches.

For their part, Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers put up a great fight, but couldn’t quite break through to spoil the Chiefs’ perfect season.

Defensively, Kansas City was led by linebacker Drue Tranquill, who combined for seven tackles and was credited with half a sack.

The Chiefs are set to face the Denver Broncos in Week 10 with a chance to advance to 9-0.

Bucs QB Baker Mayfield will not be punished for Zyn use on sideline

Going back to Week 7 against the Ravens, the injuries the Bucs suffered covered up much of what everyone remembered from that game.

Returning to Week 7 against the Baltimore Ravens, the Bucs’ injuries covered up much of what everyone remembered from that game. For the NFL, they remember something else that Baker Mayfield did on the sideline of that game.

During the broadcast, Mayfield was seen taking a Zyn pouch and putting it in his mouth. For those unaware, Zyn is a nicotine product that the NFL prohibits from the sidelines, let alone from being used.

Jenna Laine of ESPN reported that the NFL reviewed the matter and concluded that it would not punish Mayfield for the use.

Mayfield’s play has been discussed in recent weeks, so it is likely to be rinsed through the news cycle. What fans and media are much more concerned about is his consistency. The team has scored over 30 points per game in its last four games but is only 1-3 in those.

The defense needs to perform better, but Mayfield also has seven turnovers in those games, and they are making a difference.
