Bowl Game Reactions
– Boca Raton: WKU 59, App St 38
– Celebration, New Mexico, Independence to come

Boca Raton Bowl Reaction: WKU 59, Appalachian State 38

– Now THAT’S a bowl game. It started early, started fast, and it kept on rolling until Appalachian State punched itself out in the second half. 1,246 yards of total offense, 97 points, big play after big play. This was why we all do bowl season.

– Bailey Zappe was incredible. He threw for 422 yards and six scores with no picks, but he had a whole lot of help. Zappe was the signature star coming in from Houston Baptist – and he set the single season passing record and broke Joe Burrow’s touchdown pass record – but battery mate Jerreth Sterns had a whole lot to do with it, too. The star WR caught 13 passes for 184 yards and three scores.

– Appalachian State could never get control. For good and for mostly bad, it kept scoring too quickly. It needed to slow things down to a stop, but it got caught up in a firefight and couldn’t keep up. The running game did what it was supposed to do – 251 yards – but the team only had the ball for just over 31 minutes. The time of possession battle needed to be lopsided.

– No, WKU’s defense didn’t do a whole lot – it couldn’t tackle, it gave up over 600 yards, and it struggled – but the four turnovers made a difference. The pace of the game made Appalachian State press, and the mistakes followed.

COMING: Celebration Bowl, New Mexico Bowl, Independence Bowl

CFN Predictions | 2021-2022 Bowl Schedule

Western Kentucky QB Bailey Zappe snapped Joe Burrow’s single-season TD record, and fans were in awe

Hilltoppers QB Bailey Zappe broke multiple huge college football records in the Boca Raton Bowl.

Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe entered Saturday’s RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl game against Appalachian State with 56 passing touchdowns this season. That was, by far, the most among FBS quarterbacks on the year, including 13 more touchdowns than Alabama quarterback and 2021 Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young.

So after a stellar performance in the Hilltoppers’ season finale, Zappe now owns the FBS record for most passing touchdowns ever in a single season, as well as the record for most passing yards in a season. And the senior quarterback’s numbers for the year and for his team’s bowl game are outrageous.

With Zappe’s 56 touchdowns prior to the Boca Raton Bowl game, he needed four to tie former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow’s record of 60, set during the Tigers’ 2019-20 championship season.

And after throwing for four touchdowns in the first half against the Mountaineers to tie the mark, Zappe’s fifth touchdown pass of the game broke Burrow’s record. Here it is from about midway through the third quarter on a two-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley:

But, as we mentioned, that wasn’t the only record Zappe set Saturday.

He also broke the single-season passing yards record, which previously belonged to Texas Tech’s B.J. Symons at 5,833 yards. Going into the bowl game, Zappe previously had 5,545 passing yards on the season — also the most among FBS quarterbacks at that point.

Here’s a look at the moment Zappe blew past the passing yards mark in the second quarter on a 43-yard pass to junior wide receiver Jerreth Sterns:

Leading Western Kentucky to a 59-38 victory over Appalachian State, Zappe completed 33-of-47 passes for 422 yards and six (!!!) touchdowns. So his single-season passing touchdown record is set at 62, while his single-season passing yards record is now 5,967.

Entering Saturday’s bowl game, Zappe already posted some incredible stats throughout his standout season. But once he broke two major college football passing records, fans were completely in awe of what he accomplished in 14 games this season.

Twitter reacts to history from Bailey Zappe

Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe set a single-season record with his 61st touchdown pass. Twitter was quick to react.

Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe entered the RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl with a chance at breaking the Football Bowl Subdivision single-season mark for touchdown passes, set in 2019 by Joe Burrow when he led the LSU Tigers to a National Championship.

With this touchdown strike in the second half, Zappe topped the record of 60 touchdown passes throw by Burrow in that season:

It was not the only record Zappe set in the game, as he also topped the single-season passing yardage mark. Football Twitter was quick with the reactions. Here are some of the best.

Bailey Zappe locks in early for Western Kentucky against Appalachian State

Bailey Zappe is closing in on a single-season record set by Joe Burrow.

Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe entered Saturday’s RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl five touchdowns shy of Joe Burrow’s single-season mark for touchdown passes in a year.

As the first quarter draws to a close, Zappe is now just three shy of the record.

Zappe started the morning red-hot for the Hilltoppers, hitting on 10 of his first 13 passes for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He missed on his first two throws of the game, before locking in to lead the Hilltoppers to a touchdown. The big play on that opening drive was this second-down shot downfield:

Western Kentucky capped off the drive with this shield-screen for the score:

His second touchdown of the game showed why NFL teams will be interested in Zappe come the draft. Watch as simply flicks the wrist and delivers a strike on the glance route with perfect placement for the one-play scoring drive:

The end zone angle of this strike is a must-see:

Interestingly enough, Chase Brice and Appalachian State are playing their part, as the former Duke passer has two touchdown passes of their own. Should this game turn into a shootout, as seems likely, Zappe will be in good position to break that record set by Burrow.

Boca Raton Bowl Prospect Preview: WKU Hilltoppers vs. Appalachian St. Mountaineers

Boca Raton Bowl Prospect Preview: WKU Hilltoppers vs. Appalachian St. Mountaineers #GoTops #GoApp

We have now reached the first Saturday of bowl season and I expect today to be a bit less shocking than Friday as both games were nail biters and were expected to be blowouts. The first game on Saturday kicks off at 11:00 AM and features the WKU Hilltoppers (8-5) of the C-USA taking on the Appalachian State Mountaineers (10-3) of the Sun Belt.

This game should be the most exciting of the Saturday slate with the sprad being less than a field goal and both teams looking to avenge thier conference championship losses, but that’s not why we are here. Let’s dive into the top prospects!

WKU’s Bailey Zappe throws for 577 yards, 4 TDs in C-USA title game

Western Kentucky fell just short in the Conference-USA title game, but Bailey Zappe still put up more huge numbers

It somehow wasn’t enough, but Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe did everything he could to lead the Hilltoppers to a conference title Friday night.

Despite the 49-41 loss to UTSA in the Conference-USA championship game, Zappe kept putting up the same ridiculous numbers he’s posted all season long, throwing for 577 yards and four touchdowns.

The 2022 NFL draft class doesn’t have a clear-cut front-runner at quarterback, and while Zappe isn’t likely to be the first passer off the board, his incredible production this season makes him one of the more intriguing prospects in the group.

Western Kentucky QB Bailey Zappe is putting up some ridiculous numbers

If you’re looking for an under-the-radar QB prospect in the lackluster 2022 class, Western Kentucky’s Bailey Zappe might be your guy

If you’re looking for an under-the-radar quarterback prospect to get excited about in this year’s lackluster class, Western Kentucky’s Bailey Zappe is doing everything he can to be that guy.

Zappe has put up video-game numbers for the Hilltoppers this season, throwing for nearly 5,000 yards and 52 touchdowns. Those numbers aren’t far off from what we saw back in 2019 from Joe Burrow at LSU, when he delivered the most statistically dominant season from any quarterback in college football history.

Though he may not have high-upside physical tools, Zappe has plenty of skills to work with at the next level, and there’s no denying his ability to be productive. If he lands in the right spot during draft weekend, he could develop into a quality starter.

Studying Western Kentucky QB Bailey Zappe against Michigan State

Mark Schofield dives into six throws from Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe against Michigan State.

Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe is putting up video-game numbers for the Hilltoppers this season.

Through nine games Zappe has completed 69.9% of his passes for 3,688 yards, 37 touchdowns and six interceptions. But when you look at some of his single-game numbers, the production is eye-popping. Zappe threw for seven touchdowns in a season-opening win over Tennessee-Martin. He threw for five touchdowns in a win over Old Dominion in Week 6.

Against Michigan State in Week 4? Zappe completed 46 of 64 passes for 488 yards and three touchdowns.

In this video breakdown we’ll look at six throws from that game and highlight an aggressive passer who throws without hesitation, and who does a good job diagnosing pre-snap, and changing expectations post-snap if the defense tries to fool him:

Stock Watch: Kenny Pickett shines, Sam Howell and Spencer Rattler bounceback

Mark Schofield delivers his weekly look at what college quarterbacks are trending up, and who might be headed in the wrong direction.

The first full week of college football action was perhaps most notable for the performance of Matt Corral, as the Mississippi passer had the stage to himself on Monday night and did not disappoint in a win over Louisville. But the second week of college football action saw two passers bounceback after underwhelming opening games.

Furthermore, we also have reason to add two more passers to our watch lists, if that has not already been done. Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett shined in a win over Tennessee, while Western Kentucky’s Bailey Zappe put up big numbers again, albeit in a loss to Army.

Also, we have to take a moment and talk about Texas. Yes, this a quarterback-centric piece, but man…

Here’s this week’s Stock Watch.
