Every single Boston Celtics All-Star in franchise history.

The 2024 NBA All-Star Game is set to kick off in Indianapolis, Indiana. A pair of Boston Celtics will be part of the action for the third year in a row as Jayson Tatum plays as a starter and Jaylen Brown a reserve for the Eastern Conference All-Stars.

Tatum and Brown join a long list of Celtics stars who have participated in the event, now entering its 73rd year of existence, which actually got its start in the old Boston Garden. Initially created to improve the image of professional basketball after a point-shaving scandal in NCAA ball besmirched the sport in the eyes of the public, the event has taken on a life of its own as one of the league’s most anticipated events.

On this day: Celtics forward Bailey Howell, center Patrick O’Bryant born

On this day in Celtics history, champion forward Bailey Howell was born, as was center Patrick O’Bryant.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, champion Celtics small forward Bailey Howell was born in Middleton, Tennessee back in 1937. Howell, who played for the Celts for 4 seasons between 1966 and 1970, was picked up by the Detroit Pistons with the second overall pick of the 1959 NBA draft after playing his college ball at Mississippi State University.

He remained with the Pistons for a total of 5 seasons until he was traded to the (then) Baltimore Bullets (now, Washington Wizards) along with Bobby Ferry, Les Hunter, Wali Jones, and Don Ohl for Terry Dischinger, Don Kojis, and Rod Thorn.

He would later come to Boston after being traded in exchange for Mel Counts in September 1966.

With Boston Celtics Hall of Fame Paul Pierce officially part of the incoming 2021 class and big man Kevin Garnett getting his formal induction into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in May 2021 — nearly a year after getting the nod due to the pandemic — all three members of the so-called “new Big Three” of KG, Pierce and Ray Allen have been ensconced in what serves as the Valhalla of basketball.

But they are far from the only Celtics so honored. In fact, there is a veritable host of Boston legends populating the Hoop Hall in Springfield, Massachusetts, just a short drive away from the NBA’s titletown. The Celtics have more players than any other team in league history.

The Boston Celtics are one of the bedrock franchises in professional sports. Legends such as Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, Tommy Heinsohn, Larry Bird, Robert Parish, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett dazzled fans with their athletic exploits and won the NBA championship in Boston.

A couple of hours down the Mass Pike in Springfield, no fewer than four dozen players, coaches, and contributors with ties to the Celtics franchise have been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame over the years, spanning the decades from the first years of the storied ball club’s existence up to the team’s last era of contention.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball, their unretired jersey numbers pack some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

On this day, the Boston Celtics traded Bailey Howell for Mel Counts, former Celtics Jm Seminoff and Ryan Gomes were born, and the team beat the Raps in the bubble.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the storied franchise traded for big man Bailey Howell, sending center Mel Counts to the (then) Baltimore Bullets (now, Washington Wizards). Counts, who played collegiately at Oregon State, was drafted by the Celtics with the seventh pick of the 1964 NBA draft. He won a title in each of his two seasons with Boston while averaging 6.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Howell had played for Mississippi State collegiately and had been drafted by the Detroit Pistons, playing there before his stint with the Bullets. The Tennessee native played four seasons as a Celtic, part of an eventual Hall of Fame career in the NBA.

He won two titles with Boston, logging 18 points and 8.4 boards per contest over his four seasons as a Celtic.

On this day: Howell, Siegfried and Bryant lost in ’70 expansion draft

The Celtics lost Bailey Howell, Em Bryant, and Larry Siegfried in the 1970 Expansion draft held today in that year.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team would lose three players to the 1970 NBA expansion draft. The draft — the fifth expansion draft in league history — was held to populate the rosters of three new teams joining the NBA, the Buffalo Braves (which would one day become the Celtics, but that is another story), Cleveland Cavaliers, and Portland Trail Blazers.

Former Celtics point guard Emmette “Em” Bryant would be drafted by the Braves after just two seasons with Boston between 1968 and 1970, with whom he won a championship in 1969, the Celtics’ last until the mid-seventies. The Chicago native holds the distinction of being one of the only players in NBA history to have been selected in multiple expansion drafts after having been selected from the New York Knicks by the Phoenix Suns in the 1968 expansion draft as well.

Bryant averaged 6.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game in his two seasons with Boston.
