On this day in Celtics history, Ray Allen broke the all-time NBA record for made 3-pointers, and team founder Walter A. Brown was born.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, champion Celtic shooting guard Ray Allen broke Reggie Miller’s all-time made 3-point shot record in 2011.

It came in a 92-86 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, which took some of the shine off the event, but Miller — who held the previous record of 2,560 3-pointers made — was in the audience to congratulate Allen. Ray held the record (2,973 career made 3-pointers), and while several active players are above 2,000 career makes, it remains to be seen whether anyone will pass the current owner of the accomplishment in the short term, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry.

At present, he broke the record on Dec. 14, 2021, and holds the record as of this writing.

On this day In Boston Celtics history, Robert Williams III and Vincent Poirier were born, Jayson Tatum and Semi Ojeleye made their NBA debuts, Fred Scolari passed and Walter Brown was honored.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, former Celtics center Robert Williams III was born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1997, growing up in the area and attending North Caddo High School in nearby Vivian, Louisiana.

A consensus four-star prospect coming out of high school, Timelord — as Williams is often called — played his college basketball with the Texas A&M Aggies, and twice won the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year award in his two seasons with that team. He was taken by the Celtics with the 27th overall pick of the 2018 NBA draft slipping because of concerns over his health.

An issue that has indeed bothered him since, though less each season he has been in the league.

The Boston Celtics have retired 24 jersey numbers – these are the players so honored

It’s no coincidence this team has the most retired jersey numbers with 17 banners hanging alongside them as of Oct. 2023.

There are no teams in the history of the NBA to have more titles than the Boston Celtics — at least not yet — so it makes sense there are no other franchises with more retired numbers to honor the players over the decades who earned and hung those banners.

In fact, there are no teams in any sport with more retired jersey numbers at 24 overall, a reflection of the excellence behind the Celtics mystique built by franchise architect Red Auerbach. From his signing with the team as coach and general manager onward, Boston became one of the premier teams of the greatest basketball league on the planet.
