Women’s Volleyball season starts tonight

Wisconsin volleyball is back!

The Wisconsin women’s volleyball season starts tonight, with the number two ranked Badgers facing off with number 15 Baylor at the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge.

Kelly Sheffield’s team is just two seasons removed from their National Championship win over Nebraska in 2021 and they’ll look to get back to the top again in 2023.

In 2022, the team advanced all the way to the final eight, losing to Pittsburgh 3-2 over five sets, the last of which finished 15-13.

With most of the roster returning this season, Wisconsin will have a shot to win their fifth consecutive Big Ten conference title.

After Baylor, the Badgers play again Saturday at 4:30 versus TCU.

Badger Athletics ranked in top 20 for 2022-2023 season

At UW-Madison the success of the school’s athletic programs continued in 2022-2023, being ranked in the top 20 colleges by Big Game Boomer.

At UW-Madison, sports have quickly become a very large part of the university’s identity and the success of the school’s programs continued in 2022-2023, being ranked in the top 20 by Big Game Boomer.

Although many will consider the 7-6 football team and the 20-15 men’s basketball teams rather disappointing, Wisconsin came in at 18th overall on the list.

This has to be greatly due to the success of a couple programs, the women’s volleyball team and the women’s hockey team.

Volleyball finished the 28-4 while winning their fourth consecutive Big Ten title, going on to make it to the quarterfinals of the 2022 NCAA Tournament following their championship in 2021. Head coach Kelly Sheffield was awarded the Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second time (2014) in his tenure with the Badgers.

The hockey team took it one step farther than their fellow Badgers, winning the 2023 National Championship over Ohio State 1-0. The victory notched Wisconsin their seventh national title in program history and perhaps its most improbable one after finishing the regular season 29-10-2, which was their most losses since 2012-2013. Head coach Mark Johnson and his Badger women have now won all seven championships since 2006 (18 seasons).

LOOK: Wisconsin’s Big Ten volleyball schedule is out

LOOK: Wisconsin’s Big Ten volleyball schedule is out

The Wisconsin Big Ten volleyball schedule is officially here! Last week, Wisconsin announced their 2023-24 Big Ten slate. Their run of four consecutive Big Ten titles will be put to the test this year.

Wisconsin begins things with Northwestern on the road in Evanston. That match is set for Friday, September 22.

The conference schedule has a pair of three-game homesteads. Wisconsin will be at home from October 13-18 for a trio of Big Ten matchups, and then seeย Minnesota back home on Oct. 29 before a pair of home games to finish out the second trio of matches at the UW Fieldhouse.

Wisconsin finishes out the slate with home matches against Nebraska and Iowa.

Opinion: Madison ranked too low in Big Ten college town list

The Big Ten college towns were ranked by Saturday Tradition on Wednesday, and Madison came in eighth, which is certainly too low.

The Big Ten college towns were ranked by Saturday Tradition on Wednesday, and Madison came in eighth — a ranking that is certainly too low.

Whoever made this list failed to actually consider everything that Madison has to offer. There are few fan bases in the country that care about their sports teams as much as Badger fans do.

Camp Randall and the Kohl Center regularly sell out for football and men’s basketball, while the fieldhouse is always packed for the women’s volleyball team. To speak to the fan environment and passion of the Madison community, they were the only school in the nation to have more than 8,200 attend three different women’s sports events in 2022-2023.

Now to speak to the town as a whole, Madison is welcoming to all visitors. Operating as one of the most walkable cities in the country, with attractions like the capitol building, State Street and Lake Mendota, Wisconsin’s campus is tucked away in its own world.

I don’t think it’s crazy to consider Maddison a better college town than almost all of the schools in the conference, just ask ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt!

Badger Volleyball set to start spring season Friday

The Wisconsin Badgers’ volleyball team launches their spring season Friday, taking on Marquette at Oconomowoc High School at 7:30 PM CT.

The Wisconsin Badgers’ volleyball team launches their spring season Friday, taking on Marquette at Oconomowoc High School at 7:30 PM CT. The team fell short of defending their National Title from 2021 in the fall, losing to Pittsburgh in the Elite Eight.

With star players like Devyn Robinson, Anna Smrek and Sarah Franklin back on the court together again this spring, the Badgers remain one of the most dominant teams in the country.

On top of the fact that the Badgers are returning 12 letters winners, five starters and a libero from last year, they have some impressive newcomers. Minnesota transfer Carter Booth (6-foot-7) joins Wisconsin after making the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2022 as well as incoming freshman Saige Damrow from Howards Grove, Wisconsin, who won four high school state championships.

Nebraska volleyball is doing something Wisconsin should do

Nebraska volleyball is doing something Wisconsin should do

Nebraska volleyball has long been a Big Ten powerhouse, and the Huskers deserve credit for one of the coolest initiatives the sport has seen.

This year was full of attendance records, with the latest being set by Wisconsin volleyball during its match at the Kohl Center.

Nebraska is set to shatter that on Aug. 30, 2023. The Huskers will be playing a match outdoors at Memorial Stadium, the Nebraska football team’s home stadium. The Huskers will take on Omaha in an exhibition matchup.

Could you imagine Wisconsin volleyball getting to play a game at Camp Randall stadium in front of 80,000 fans? If there is any way Wisconsin can pull this off, it needs to. The Kohl Center match was a good start, but this would be legendary.

Aug. 30 will be an awesome day for the sport:

Wisconsin volleyball to take on Marquette at a special venue in 2023

Wisconsin volleyball will take on Marquette next season

Right now the concern for Wisconsin volleyball and Badger fans is the NCAA Tournament, but there is already a lot to look forward to next season.

Wisconsin will renew the I-94 rivalry at Fiserv Forum as the Badgers take on Marquette on September 13, 2023.

“This is an exciting announcement and I’m thrilled that our volleyball team will have the opportunity to play in such a terrific venue,” said Wisconsin athletic director Chris McIntosh on Saturday. “We are always seeking impactful experiences for our student-athletes and this promises to be a special event.”

The Badgers concern right now? Beating TCU in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday night.

The Big Ten begins play in late August, with matches scheduled to start on August 26-27.

The Badgers had three players named to the Big Ten preseason team, as outside hitter Sarah Franklin, middle blocker Devyn Robinson, and middle blocker Anna Smrek all earned the nod. Here is a look at the Big Ten volleyball preseason poll and where the national champions ended up:

WATCH: Paul Chryst congratulates Wisconsin volleyball

The Badgers took home their first national championship

In his press conference earlier this week, Wisconsin football coach Paul Chryst opened with a congratulatory message for Badger volleyball. Wisconsin volleyball took home their first national championship in program history this past weekend, as they defeated Nebraska in a five-set thriller.

After back-to-back years of heartbreak for a team that reached two consecutive Final Fours only to fall short, the Badger seniors put together one last magical ride. This time, it ended happily.

Chryst spoke on how impressed he has been watching Wisconsin volleyball’s commitment and work ethic. Here is Wisconsin’s football coach on the Badgers taking home a national championship:
