College football season is on the horizon and the Badgers’ opener is now 70 days away as Wisconsin faces Buffalo on Sept. 2 at Camp Randall. In 2010, the Badgers set multiple scoring records, starting with their 70-3 win over Austin Peay on Sept. 25.

In the contest, quarterback Scott Tolzien threw for 217 yards and three touchdowns, but the running game is what made the difference for the Badgers. Starter John Clay turned 15 carries into 118 yards and a score while backup James White truly burst onto the scene. The true freshman recorded 145 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries.

Montee Ball added another 64 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries while Wisconsin set the program record with 70 points. That record wouldn’t stand long though, as the team went on to beat Indiana 83-20 in November.

Wisconsin finished the 2010 campaign 11-1 before going on to lose the 2011 Rose Bowl to TCU by a score of 21-19.

Dayne burst onto the scene with Wisconsin in 1996, producing 2,109 rushing yards and 21 scores on the ground, both of which were program records. He only became a bigger star as time went on, rushing for over 1,400 yards while scoring at least 15 times in each of his four seasons with the team.

In total, he finished his career with 7,125 yards and 71 rushing TDs, both of which were all-time highs for a Badger at the time of his departure. The yards record still stands while Montee Ball (77) has passed him in touchdowns.

Dayne went on to help the Badgers win the Rose Bowl in both 1999 and 2000 while winning the 1999 Heisman Trophy. His stellar career in Madison led to him being selected 11th overall in the 2000 NFL Draft by the New York Giants.

Leading Wisconsin to an 11-2 overall record, Tolzien completed 194 passes for 2,459 yards and 16 touchdowns while starting all 13 games. The 2010 season was the start of a three-year stretch where the Badgers made the Rose Bowl each season, losing all three.

He finished his career in Madison with 5,271 passing yards (seventh all-time) and 32 passing touchdowns (10th all-time). His 72.9 percent completion percentage remains the highest total for a single season in program history, just barely edging out Russell Wilson’s 72.8 percent from 2011.

Tolzien went on to go unselected in the 2011 NFL Draft and he started two games for the Green Bay Packers in 2013 and two others for the Indianapolis Colts (one in 2016 and another in 2017) before retiring.

The Wisconsin football team is just 78 days away from taking the field Sept. 2 versus Buffalo in their 2023 season opener. With the Badgers looking to make a mark in the first year under new head coach Luke Fickell, wide receiver Jared Abbrederis did just that in 2013.

Entering his fourth and final season with the Badgers, Abbrederis was coming off of back-to-back productive campaigns in 2011 and 2012, but he’d set a record in 2013. He recorded a program-high 78 receptions on his way to 1,081 yards (fourth all-time) and seven touchdowns.

The Badgers went 9-3 in the regular season that year prior to losing to South Carolina 34-24 in the 2014 Capital One Bowl. Abbrederis, a senior, entered the 2014 NFL Draft and was selected in the fifth round (176th overall) by the Green Bay Packers.

Although he didn’t last long in the league, the wide receiver’s career at Madison was one of the best in program history ranking tied for first with Brandon Williams in receptions (202), second in receiving yards (3,140) and tied for second with Tony Simmons in touchdown catches (23).

The Wisconsin football team is now 81 days away from their season opener Sept. 2 against Buffalo at Camp Randall as the 2023 college football campaign is on the horizon. As the Badgers gear up for their much-anticipated first season under head coach Luke Fickell, the team turned a corner in 1981.

Prior to the 1981 season, quarterback Randy Wright joined the Badgers and operated as the top backup behind starter Jess Cole. On the season, Wright only completed 21 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns as the 7-4 Wisconsin squad went on to lose to 28-21 to Tennessee in the Garden State Bowl game.

It was Wisconsin’s first bowl appearance since 1962 and the team wouldn’t have to wait long to get another try. In 1982, led by Wright as the starting quarterback, the Badgers won the Independence Bowl, beating Kansas State 14-3.

The quarterback threw for two touchdowns and was selected as the offensive MVP in the contest after Wright had delivered the Badgers their first ever bowl victory.

In total, Wright only spent two seasons as the team’s starting signal-caller, but he left a massive mark. His 5,003 passing yards and 38 passing touchdowns were both program records when he ended his Wisconsin career following the 1983 campaign.

Wright went to be selected in the sixth round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers, starting 32 games for the team over a five-year professional career.
