Giants injury report: Daniel Jones among 8 missing practice

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones (neck) headed a massive list of injured players who were unable to practice on Wednesday.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday ahead of a Week 6 game against the Buffalo Bills in Orchard Park and all eyes were on quarterback Daniel Jones.

Despite head coach Brian Daboll expressing optimism that Jones could play on Sunday, and DJ sharing similar sentiments, the news was anything but positive.

Jones was unable to practice because his neck was “more sore” than the day prior. Compounding matters, multiple other players also missed practice due to injury, including offensive linemen Andrew Thomas, Matt Peart and John Michael Schmitz, wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson, tight end Darren Waller and linebacker Azeez Ojulari.

In total, the Giants were able to field just six offensive linemen from their 53-man roster during Wednesday’s practice.

The Giants’ full Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: QB Daniel Jones (neck), LT Andrew Thomas (hamstring), OL John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), OL Matt Peart (shoulder), LB Azeez Ojulari (ankle), LB Micah McFadden (ankle), TE Darren Waller (groin), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee/rest)

Giants’ Daniel Jones provides ominous update on neck injury

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones tried to downplay his neck injury but ultimately admitted it felt similar to the injury he suffered in 2021.

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones lay on the grass in obvious pain after absorbing his 28th sack of the season and his 16th over the past two games.

It’s a scene that has become all too familiar to Giants fans but this time, Jones was slow to get back up. Instead, he was immediately tended to by trainers before being whisked away to the blue medical tent and then the locker room.

The Giants almost immediately ruled him out for the game.

Such a swift designation is rarely a positive sign and that fear was realized when the team announced that Jones had suffered a neck injury.

That injury is significant because Jones suffered a terrifying neck/spinal injury in 2021 that cost him the final six games of the season and required surgery, although he insisted at the time it was unrelated.

After the 31-16 loss to Miami, Jones attempted to downplay his injury but ultimately admitted that the pain was similar to the 2021 injury.

“I think I’m certainly in some pain, physical game. So I’ll meet with the doctors and trainers and then go from there,” Jones told reporters. “I’ve certainly dealt with a similar issue. Like I said, I’ll meet with the doctors and trainers and go from there.”

Jones will have an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury but given his history, it’s likely he’ll miss some time.

However, like Jones himself, head coach Brian Daboll attempted to downplay the injury a bit until more information was available.

“I just saw him when I came in. He was sitting at his locker. I asked how he was doing, and he said, ‘I’ll be OK.’ That’s what he said,” Daboll told reporters. “Got hit pretty good. He’s been getting hit quite a bit.”

Jones has been getting hit entirely too much but now Daboll has a plan.

“Affecting the quarterback plays an important role in the game. We have to figure out ways to protect him better,” Daboll said.

Unfortunately for Jones, it’s a little late for that.

Giants clobbered by Dolphins, 31-16, in latest embarrassment

The New York Giants were smacked around by the Miami Dolphins, 31-16, in Week 5 and lost QB Daniel Jones (neck) in the process.

The New York Giants faced off against the dynamic Miami Dolphins down at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida on Sunday afternoon in hopes of pulling off an upset that could rejuvenate their sagging season.

The Giants entered the game as 12.5-point underdogs to the Dolphins, who lead the NFL in offensive yards gained and total points through the first four weeks of the 2023 regular season.

The Giants played without Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) for the third straight week and were also missing left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring) and center John Michael Schmitz (shoulder).

Needless to say, there was no upset and there was no rejuvenation. Instead, the Giants were smacked around and lost quarterback Daniel Jones (neck) in the process.

Giants vs. Dolphins: 3 reasons for optimism in Week 5

The New York Giants visit the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon in Week 5, and here are three reasons for optimism.

The New York Giants will go on the road to battle the Miami Dolphins in Week 5 in hopes of pulling off a significant upset to improve to 2-3 on the season.

The matchup will be a handful for the Giants, particularly on the defensive side of the ball as they try to slow down the top-ranked scoring offense in the league.

With the Giants clearly outmatched in this game, it could be a blowout in a hurry but hopefully, Brian Daboll’s crew are up to the task.

Here are three reasons for optimism heading into Sunday.

Giants injury report: Andrew Thomas, John Michael Schmitz remain sidelined

New York Giants LT Andrew Thomas and rookie OL John Michael Schmitz remain sidelined in practice and appear unlikely to play in Week 5.

The New York Giants took the field for their second of three practices leading up to Saturday’s departure for Florida.

There was hope that both left tackle Andrew Thomas and rookie center John Michael Schmitz would return to the field but that did not happen. Instead, head coach Brian Daboll revealed that nothing would change from the day prior.

That likely means no Thomas, JMS or reserve Shane Lemieux for the Giants on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

It also wasn’t entirely accurate as linebacker Micah McFadden was added with an ankle injury.

Running back Saquon Barkley was once again limited but he, too, remains uncertain for the Week 5 game.

The Giants’ Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: LT Andrew Thomas (hamstring), OL John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), OL Shane Lemieux (groin)

Limited participant: LB Azeez Ojulari (hamstring), RB Saquon Barkley (ankle), TE Daniel Bellinger (knee), OL Evan Neal (hand/ankle), OL Marcus McKethan (knee), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee) and RB Gary Brightwell (ankle), LB Micah McFadden (ankle)

Giants injury report: Andrew Thomas, John Michael Schmitz miss practice

The New York Giants were without three offensive linemen in practice on Wednesday, including Andrew Thomas and John Michael Schmitz.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday, just two days removed from a humiliating loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football.

They now have just four days to prepare for a Week 5 game against the high-powered Miami Dolphins, who are looking to bounce back following a Sunday loss to the Buffalo Bills.

As the Giants took the field in East Rutherford, all eyes were on their banged-up offensive line and the news wasn’t good.

Left tackle Andrew Thomas, rookie center John Michael Schmitz, and reserve Shane Lemieux all missed practice due to their respective injuries. However, head coach Brian Daboll did indicate that JMS could play against the Dolphins on Sunday.

Meanwhile, linebacker Azeez Ojulari returned to limited participation following his recent return and was joined by tight end Daniel Bellinger and several others.

The Giants’ Wednesday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: LT Andrew Thomas (hamstring), OL John Michael Schmitz (shoulder), OL Shane Lemieux (groin)

Limited participant: LB Azeez Ojulari (hamstring), RB Saquon Barkley (ankle), TE Daniel Bellinger (knee), OL Evan Neal (hand/ankle), OL Marcus McKethan (knee), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (knee) and RB Gary Brightwell (ankle)

Giants still waiting for their pass rush to arrive

The New York Giants desperately need their pass rush to step up and they hope that Azeez Ojulari’s Monday night return provides a spark.

The New York Giants have invested heavily in pass rushers over the past few years — an investment they are still waiting to reap the benefits of.

In 2021, they selected Georgia outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari with the 50th overall pick. After a promising inaugural season in which he set a franchise record for sacks by a rookie, Ojulari has been besieged by injuries, playing in just seven games last season and one this year.

Ojulari has missed the past two games with a hamstring injury.

The Giants drafted Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux with the fifth overall pick last year to pair with Ojulari, as bookends of sorts, but that plan has not fully manifested itself as of yet.

Thibodeaux has had some ‘a-ha’ moments but has largely struggled at times. He has five sacks in 17 games as a Giant.

This season, the Giants have recorded only two sacks with 16 pressures and have the lowest quarterback-hurry rate in the NFL (2.1 percent of dropbacks).

Ojulari and Thibodeaux should be on the field together on Monday night when the Giants host the Seattle Seahawks at MetLife Stadium.

“He’s a good player for us,” head coach Brian Daboll said of Ojulari. “We’ve got to get him into those situations where we can utilize his skillset, which he does a good job of rushing the passer, but we’ve got to play good team defense, good team football in order to get to some of those situations.”

Truer words have never been spoken. The Giants have been behind in games for all but 19 seconds this season. That has to change.

Giants vs. Seahawks: 5 biggest storylines for Week 4

The New York Giants face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4. Here are the five biggest storylines to follow for this contest.

The New York Giants (1-2) host the Seattle Seahawks (2-1) at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Monday Night Football in Week 4 of the 2023 NFL season.

Here are five storylines we are following.

Giants injury report: Andrew Thomas misses practice

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll wouldn’t call it a setback but LT Andrew Thomas (hamstring) missed practice on Friday.

The New York Giants were back at practice on Friday, this time working inside the field house with Mother Nature dumping buckets of water on the northeast.

The concerning development for the Giants was the status of left tackle Andrew Thomas (hamstring), who appeared to take a step backward. He did not participate on Friday after being limited in practice on Thursday.

However, head coach Brian Daboll refused to say Thomas suffered a “setback” and wouldn’t address his chances of playing on Monday night.

“It’s the right thing to do,” Daboll said of Thomas not practicing, adding that the left tackle received treatment.

In more positive injury-related news, running back Saquon Barkley (ankle) practiced for the second consecutive day, as did linebacker Azeez Ojulari (hamstring).

The Giants’ Friday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: OL Andrew Thomas (hamstring)

Limited participant: LB Azeez Ojulari (hamstring), RB Saquon Barkley (ankle), TE Daniel Bellinger (neck), DL Davidson (elbow)

Full participant: OL Ben Bredeson (concussion)

Giants injury report: Saquon Barkley, Ben Bredeson return to practice

The New York Giants did not have anyone miss practice on Thursday with RB Saquon Barkley and OL Ben Bredeson returning.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field for the first time (save for walkthroughs) in more than a week on Thursday and it provided an opportunity to see where several of the team’s injured players are at.

As head coach Brian Daboll alluded to earlier in the week, left guard Ben Bredeson has cleared concussion protocol and appears to be a go in Week 4. Left tackle Andrew Thomas also appears to be on the mend.

They weren’t alone as the entire team practiced in some capacity, even running back Saquon Barkley, who is nursing a high-ankle sprain.

“So, everybody will practice today. Some in a limited role, but we’ll see where they go from individual, team, but they’re all practicing today,” head coach Brian Daboll said.

Things appear to be trending in the right direction and that’s something Big Blue needs as they head into a must-win game against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday night.

The Giants’ Thursday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: N/A

Limited participant: LB Azeez Ojulari (hamstring), OL Andrew Thomas (hamstring), RB Saquon Barkley (ankle), TE Daniel Bellinger (neck), DL Davidson (elbow)
