Broncos QB Bo Nix nominated for Rookie of the Week yet again

Broncos QB Bo Nix has once again been nominated for the Rookie of the Week award. Go vote!

The Denver Broncos stand at 7-5 after 12 weeks, and one of the biggest reasons for their surprising success has been steady quarterback play.

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix had another turnover-free performance against the Las Vegas Raiders, going 25-of-42 for 272 yards and two scores, both thrown to wide receiver Courtland Sutton.

Following that performance, Nix has been nominated for the Rookie of the Week award on NFL.com. Nix was one of six players on either side of the ball to be nominated for the award.

The other nominees are as follows:

  • Commanders QB Jayden Daniels (25 of 38 (65.8%) for 275 yards, 2 TDs; 74 rushing yards, rushing TD)
  • Bears QB Caleb Williams (32 of 47 (68.1%) for 340 yards, 2 TDs, 103.1 rating; 33 rushing yards)
  • Buccaneers RB Bucky Irving (151 scrimmage yards (87 rushing, 64 receiving), rushing TD)
  • Dolphins LB Chop Robinson (4 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 PDs)
  • Titans CB Jarvis Brownlee Jr. (4 tackles, INT, 3 PDs, TFL)

This is Nix’s fifth nomination for Rookie of the Week this season. After struggling to start the season, Nix has improved week after week, being a vocal leader of the Broncos as the year has progressed.

Fans can vote for Nix through Thursday morning on NFL.com.

Tyrann Mathieu nominated for Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

Tyrann Mathieu has been nominated for a special award Drew Brees won in 2018. He’s the New Orleans Saints’ pick for the Art Mooney Sportsmanship Award:

New Orleans Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu has been nominated as the Saints’ representative for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.

This is still a relatively new award, being created in 2014. There’s only been 10 award winners and two of them are former Saints players. Drew Brees received the award in 2018, while Teddy Bridgewater was the award’s recipient in 2020. At that time, however, Bridgewater had moved on to the Carolina Panthers.

This award is similar to the Walter Payton Man of the Year award in the sense that it is based on character, not statistics. The criteria for the award is on-field sportsmanship, fair play, respect for the game and opponents and integrity in competition.

Mathieu is one of the Saints biggest leaders and most respected players in the league, so his inclusion here is no surprise. The next step is to be selected by four former players as one of the NFC’s finalists. If he is able to get that far, his fate remains in the hands of active players.

Broncos QB Bo Nix wins 2 more awards: ‘It doesn’t end with just that’

Triple Crown: Broncos QB Bo Nix was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week, the Air Player of the Week and the Rookie of the Week.

The awards just keep coming for Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix.

After being named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week, Nix was also named the Air Player of the Week and the Rookie of the Week on NFL.com.

“I’m proud of where he’s at,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said of Nix after Wednesday’s practice. “He works tirelessly and [has] the confidence in his teammates. All of that stuff is what you hope to see.

“The best part is — you guys know him now — he’s very grounded and he’s very team-driven relative to what’s important. We just want to keep building on that. It’s good with where we’re at in this juncture of the season.”

Nix went 28-of-33 (84.8%) passing for 307 yards with four touchdowns and no turnovers in a 38-6 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

Nix was honored by this week’s accolades, but he knows there’s still work to be done.

“It’s cool, it’s a great honor,” Nix said Wednesday, “It’s a great responsibility, but at the same time it doesn’t end with just that. You obviously have to continue to go back. They only remember your last game, so you have to go out there and continue to do it. It’s a great honor. Many great players have won the award in the past, so it’s an honor to be included and be that recipient. [There is] a lot of work left to be done.”

Nix aims to remain even-keeled going forward.

“I understand what it’s like to be playing well, and then also not playing well,” Nix said. “So [I] definitely want to continue playing well. It’s just being able to stay grounded with being able to handle the highs and the lows and just remain the same. Be the same guy in the locker room all the time.”

Up next for the Broncos is a road game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Taysom Hill recognized with his second career Offensive Player of the Week award

Take a bow, Taysom Hill. The Saints’ standout football player was recognized with his second career Offensive Player of the Week award:

Take a bow, Taysom Hill. The New Orleans Saints football player was recognized with his second career NFC Offensive Player of the Week award after making plays as a runner, receiver, and passer against the Cleveland Browns — not counting his impressive kick return for 42 yards.

Take that with his 138 rushing yards, 50 receiving yards, and an 18-yard pass, and Hill amassed 188 yards from scrimmage with 230 all-purpose yards. Each of those totals were personal bests for him, and he had three touchdown runs on the afternoon, too.

This is the third weekly honor for Hill after he was previously named NFC Offensive Player of the Week in 2022 and NFC Special Teams Player of the Week in 2018. Call him a quarterback, fullback, tight end or wide receiver — wherever Hill lines up, he makes plays. That’s what interim head coach Darren Rizzi expressed to FOX Sports sideline reporter Jennifer Hale during Sunday’s win over the Browns.

“Taysom’s an unbelievable football player, usually the more we can use him the better off we are,” Rizzi said on the broadcast, acknowledging Hill’s highlights despite an interception and fumble on the day. “We just gotta do a better job limiting the negative plays, can’t turn the football over. But we’re going to use Taysom as much as we can.”

Hill is averaging a career-high 38.3 rushing yards per game this season on top of 21.4 receiving yards per game, which is also the most for his time in the NFL. Over the summer Klint Kubiak and the Saints coaching staff expressed an eagerness to get more out of Hill than in past seasons, and you’re seeing that pay off. Hill just needs to stay healthy, protect the football, and keep earning recognition for his efforts.

Bo Nix makes more Broncos history with AFC Offensive Player of the Week nod

Bo Nix is the first rookie quarterback in Broncos history to win AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has been named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week following his impressive performance against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 11, the NFL announced Wednesday.

Nix is the first rookie quarterback in franchise history to win the award, yet another accomplishment added to his growing list of accolades.

Nix went 28-of-33 (84.8%) passing for 307 yards with four touchdowns and no turnovers in a 38-6 win over the Falcons on Sunday. It was a historic performance as Nix became the first rookie QB in NFL history to throw for at least 300 yards and four touchdowns with a completion rate above 80%.

The last Broncos quarterback to win this award was Trevor Siemian in 2016. Denver’s last player to win it was wide receiver Jerry Jeudy in 2022. Nix is the tenth rookie in franchise history to take home the honors.

Earlier this season, Denver kicker Wil Lutz (special teams), cornerback Pat Surtain (defense) and linebacker Cody Barton (defense) received Player of the Week recognition.

Bill Belichick says Sean Payton should be a Coach of the Year candidate

“They don’t even have a full team here from a salary cap standpoint,” Bill Belichick said of what Sean Payton is doing with the Broncos.

The Denver Broncos are 6-5 and within reach of making the playoffs, and former NFL coach Bill Belichick has taken notice.

During his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday, Belichick suggested that Broncos coach Sean Payton should be in consideration for Coach of the Year honors.

Technically, Belichick said “Executive of the Year” for the way Payton has managed the team, but that’s not an award Payton would qualify for.

“I think Sean really should be in the running for — whatever, Executive of the Year or whatever you want to call it,” Belichick said. “I mean, to play with, you know, a team that’s 30% under the strength based on the salary cap and the dead money that they had to carry.

“They don’t even have a full team here from a salary cap standpoint. But these guys are playing really well and they’re in a tough division, but seems like they’re getting better. And they’re good on defense.”

The Broncos took on a $53 million dead money cap hit this spring when they released quarterback Russell Wilson. Despite that, Denver’s been competitive this fall, which is no small feat.

Belichick also spoke about the fit Nix has been in Payton’s offense as a rookie.

“Sean runs a tough offense,” Belichick said. “He does. They substitute almost on every play. They change formations a lot. They don’t repeat plays — they repeat concepts but not plays. There’s a lot for the quarterback to do to get things organized cleanly, and it seems like Nix is doing a good job of it. … It’s a pretty smooth operation.”

Notable praise from one of the best coaches in NFL history. Payton and Nix appear to have the Broncos back on track.

Broncos QB Bo Nix making a real case of Offensive Rookie of the Year

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is building a strong case to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award this fall.

After a slow start to his pro career, Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix has been red-hot in recent weeks.

Nix posted a record-breaking performance in a 38-6 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, completing 28-of-33 passes for 307 yards with four touchdowns and no turnovers.

“I thought he played well,” coach Sean Payton said after Sunday’s win. “You feel like you’re in good hands. He’s smart with the football. He makes plays with his feet. A lot of times you’re calling plays for certain looks [and] the looks aren’t there. He has that ability to create and all the while protect the football. I thought he played really well.”

Broncos left tackle Garett Bolles also gushed with praise for Nix.

“I think he’s incredible,” Bolles said. “Bo is my dog, and he leads his team. He leads this offense. We go as far as his play. Us five up front just needed to handle business and that’s what we did. What makes him so special is when he has time to throw the ball, he gets the ball to our playmakers. He’s a deadly quarterback in this league.”

Nix is now gaining steam as a legitimate Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate, joining Jayden Daniels in the conversation.

“He’s been on fire all year,” receiver Troy Franklin said. “He’s been doing really well, especially his confidence and the way he carries himself in the locker room. We really didn’t feel like we had a rookie. He just feels like an experienced veteran, and he’s been on the field every play.

“With his elusiveness and being able to extend plays, he doesn’t quit on any plays. He’s Bo Nix. He wants to make the most of every play so it’s a lot of fun playing with him.”

Nix has scored 19 total touchdowns this season (14 passing, four rushing and one receiving). The next-closest among rookies is Daniels (14).

“The dude should be in conversations for Rookie of the Year,” veteran receiver Courtland Sutton said. “There should be no hesitation. He shows up week-in and week-out, he’s only been able to progress each weekend. That’s all you can ask for. For a young guy to continue to progress, continue to meet the challenges that are faced in front of them, and that is what he continues to do.

“It’s a lot of fun to be a part of. A lot of fun to watch him go out there and just have fun. You can tell he’s like a kid, he is just enjoying himself. For your quarterback to be out there enjoying himself and not panic, there’s not one ounce of panic that goes upon him, no matter what part of the game we’re in. It’s a lot of fun.”

Oddsmakers have also noticed Nix’s ascension. Before the season started, BetMGM had Nix listed with +1700 odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. He’s now all the way down to +400, only trailing Daniels (-600).

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

“I haven’t seen a quarterback, a rookie quarterback, like him, in a long time,” running back Javonte Williams said. “And just the way he keeps composure, the way he treats people, and just the way he plays on the field. I mean, he’s the full package.”

Broncos star cornerback Pat Surtain took it a step further by suggesting Nix is in the conversation for NFL MVP this fall.

It’s probably too early to talk NFL MVP, but Nix has certainly put himself in the mix to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. Nix will look to build on his 2,572 yards and 19 touchdowns when Denver goes on the road to face the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 12.

Broncos nominate former player Keith Bishop for Salute to Service award

The Broncos nominated former offensive lineman and current Vice President of Security Keith Bishop for the 2024 Salute to Service.

The Denver Broncos have nominated former offensive lineman and current Vice President of Security Keith Bishop for the 2024 Salute to Service Award presented by USAA nominee, the team announced Friday.

“After his retirement from a ten-year NFL career, Keith worked in federal law enforcement as a special agent for the United States Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration for 20 years,” according to a press release from the team. “He was assigned as the DEA Assistant Regional Director/Assistant Special Agent in Charge and Country Attache at the DEA office in Kabul, Afghanistan (2008-2012).”

In his role with the Broncos, Bishop works closely with first responders at all levels to protect the members of the team. His appreciation for members of the military goes far beyond his years in government service.

“His personal support for the military reaches far into the community, as Bishop supports military-serving organizations including Freedom Service Dogs (FSD) and the Center for American Values,” said the team’s statement. “FSD transforms lives by providing custom-trained service dogs to assist veterans, first responders and active-duty service members who have post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, and loss of limbs or mobility due to combat-related injuries.

“The Center for American Values’ mission is to honor the sacrifices made by civilians and veterans alike to help sustain America’s values of honor, integrity and patriotism. Bishop is a committed board member for the center and was a featured speaker for the On Values speaker series in February of 2024. For these reasons and more, Keith has earned the Broncos’ nomination for the 2024 Salute to Service Award.”

This marks the second year in a row the Broncos have nominated a former player for the Salute to Service award. Denver nominated Hall of Famer Randy Gradishar for the honor in 2023.

The winner of the award will be revealed during NFL Honors before the Super Bowl in February.
