Jalen Hurts and dad Averion attend 76ers vs. Lakers matchup one day after overtime win against Buffalo Bills

Eagles’ All-Pro quarterback Jalen Hurts scored the winning touchdown on a quarterback draw with 2:37 left in overtime, and the Philadelphia Eagles moved to 10-1 on the season, defeating the Buffalo Bills 37-34 on a cold, rainy afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field.

Hurts threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more, outplaying Buffalo’s Josh Allen down the stretch while rallying the Eagles from a 17-7 halftime deficit for the second straight game.

One night after the huge performance, Hurts and his dad, Averion, sat courtside for the Los Angeles Lakers one trip to the Wells Fargo Center to face Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers.

Embiid had a triple double (30-11-11), while Tyrese Maxey had 36 points, and 8 assist as The Sixers defeated LeBron James and the Lakers, 138-94.

We’re looking at some takeaways and instant analysis from the Philadelphia Eagles promoting QB coach Brian Johnson to the offensive coordinator position

In a move that has been expected since Shane Steichen accepted the Colts’ head coaching job, Brian Johnson has been promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator.

A former college quarterback at Utah who has known the Hurts family for years, Johnson is completing his second season with the Eagles after serving as the offensive coordinator for the University of Florida, helping get Kyle Trask and Kyle Pitts to the NFL.

He’ll now be tasked when making sure the NFL’s most dominant offense keeps its identity while taking the next step in efficiency and innovation.

Here are takeaways and an instant analysis of the move.

Averion Hurts on his son Jalen facing Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl: It’s huge for the culture

Jalen Hurts’ dad Averion talked about the matchup between his son and Patrick Mahomes in #SuperBowlLVll calling it huge for the black culture

The topic of whether black quarterbacks could be successful in the NFL has been ongoing since Fritz Pollard became the first to play the position in the league in 1923 and Doug Williams was the first to start and win a Super Bowl for Washington in 1988.

Ten days from now, Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts will be the first Black quarterbacks to face off in a Super Bowl.

The NFL had 11 black quarterbacks start regular season games in 2021, and the father of one MVP candidate believes the matchup will be huge for the culture.

“I think it’s huge,” said Averion Hurts. “We understand how it was and how it’s been for a long time and the narratives that used to be out there on what African Americans could do at the quarterback position.”

The Channelview High School head coach echoed Nick Saban’s recent comments about Hurts’ commitment to the process.

“That’s just him by nature. He is a very driven, very determined person. Whatever he sets his mind to, he locks in on it and he goes for it,” said Averion Hurts. “He’s very steadfast in what he believes in and he doesn’t allow any outside factors to deter him.”

Mahomes became the third Black quarterback to win the Super Bowl in 2020 and is aiming to become the first Black quarterback in NFL history to win multiple Super Bowls, while Hurts could become the fourth Black quarterback to win the Lombardi Trophy.

Eagles new QB coach has a unique connection and relationship with Jalen Hurts

Eagles new QB coach Brian Johnson has known Jalen Hurts and his father Averion since the quarterback was four years old

The Eagles have a new quarterback coach and depending on the lens you use to objectively look at things, Carson Wentz’s time in Philadelphia could still be coming to an end.

Most of the Eagles hires have reportedly centered around fixing Wentz, but the coach brought in to work with the quarterbacks has actually known Philadelphia’s backup quarterback since the young age of four and the relationship extended to collegiate recruitment.

During an Inquirer article from last May detailing the Eagles selection of Hurts, Dak Prescott was used as the example to have a solid backup quarterback in case of injury.

Johnson then the Gators offensive coordinator, spoke on Prescott’s ascension to NFL starter and the similarities that the Cowboys quarterback shared with Hurts.

Could Hurts do the same thing if necessary? Johnson’s perspective on that question is unique. Hurts’ father, Averion, was an assistant coach at Baytown Lee High School in Baytown, Texas, when Johnson played there. “I’ve known Jalen since he was 4,” Johnson said. And when Hurts was a star at Channelview High, Johnson recruited him. Hurts’ decision came down to Mississippi State and Alabama. He chose the latter.

“You never see him sweat,” said Johnson, now the quarterbacks coach at Florida. “I do think he and Dak have similarities in their games – not only in their games, but in their approach and their mindset. Both of those kids are two of the mentally toughest people I’ve ever seen or been around – how they handle themselves, the competitive nature they have.

It’s an interesting read and dynamic, and if Carson Wentz is truly unnerved by the presence of Jalen Hurts, then having a familiar face and family friend on the staff could make things even shakier as the 2021 offseason plays out.
