Panthers place two offensive linemen on reserve/COVID-19 list

With starting center Pat Elflein now on the shelf, the Panthers will be rolling out yet another new offensive line combination in Week 16.

If the Carolina Panthers lead in the something, it’s probably for their amount of different starting offensive lines. Unfortunately, they’ll be adding to that lead come Sunday.

The team announced the placement of three more players to the reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday. That trio includes starting center Pat Elflein, backup offensive lineman Dennis Daley and practice squad defensive end Austin Larkin.

Elflein, with Matt Paradis having sustained a season-ending knee injury earlier in the year, has started in the middle in each of the past five weeks. His status will now give way and the start for the Week 16 matchup to Sam Tecklenburg—marking what’ll be the 12th unique combination along the front for Carolina in 15 games.

Also in question for the contest is left tackle Cameron Erving, who was listed on Wednesday’s injury report as a limited participant with a calf issue. Rookie Brady Christensen would presumably get the start on the blindside against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers if Erving isn’t a go.

Panthers waive 2 players, sign 2 others before Sunday practice

The Carolina Panthers have made a few roster moves ahead of today’s training camp practice.

The Carolina Panthers have made a few roster moves ahead of today’s training camp practice. The team announced that they have signed former Packers defensive end Kendall Donnerson, as well as defensive back LaDarius Wiley.

Donnerson was a seventh-round pick by the Packers in the 2018 NFL draft. Since then he has been bouncing around – first on and off Green Bay’s roster, then he spent time with the Raiders, Bengals, Bills and Saints. Donnerson also was with Carolina earlier this year, but he was released 10 days after he was signed. He has not played in a live game as of yet.

As for Wiley, he played his college ball at Vanderbilt, where he forced seven fumbles. He has played for the Titans and Seahawks.

To make room for the new guys, the Panthers waived defensive end Austin Larkin – who suffered a groin injury last week – plus undrafted offensive lineman David Moore.

Panthers injury udpates: CB A.J. Bouye, DE Austin Larkin

The worst of them could be veteran cornerback A.J. Bouye’s.

The Panthers are roughly halfway through their 2021 training camp schedule. They had been relatively lucky with injuries most of this offseason, but this week that luck took a turn. Beginning with Keith Kirkwood’s concussion at the hands of J.T. Ibe’s dangerous hit, Carolina has suffered several injuries the last few days.

The worst of them could be veteran cornerback A.J. Bouye’s, who’s expected to miss a couple weeks with a soft tissue problem, per coach Matt Rhule.

With Bouye sidelined, Myles Hartsfield has been lining up in the slot. Whether he’s fully recovered or not, Bouye will miss the first two games of the season due to a PED suspension.

In related news, during Thursday’s practice defensive end Austin Larkin was carted off the field and did not return. Rhule told reporters afterwards his injury is to the groin area.

Linebacker Denzel Perryman and running back Darius Clark remain sidelined.

Panthers sign former Baylor CB, former Falcons DE

Panthers sign former Baylor CB, former Falcons DE

The Carolina Panthers have announced two signings at the outset of today’s training camp practice.

Three days ago, the team brought in former Baylor cornerback Jameson Houston and former Falcons defensive end Austin Larkin for a tryout. Today they added both of them to the 80-man roster, per the team website.

In a pair of corresponding moves, the Panthers waived veteran defensive end DaVonte Lambert and cornerback Cole Luke.

Carolina doesn’t have much depth to go around at cornerback. That combined with Houston’s experience with coach Matt Rhule might give him a legitimate shot to make the roster or a practice squad spot.

Larkin faces a more difficult path as the Panthers are still relatively loaded with young edge talent.

Panthers tried out former Falcons DE, two rookie defensive backs

Yesterday, the Carolina Panthers tried out a former Falcons defensive end and two rookie defensive backs.

The Panthers have been one of the most active teams in the NFL trying out free agents lately. On Sunday, the team worked out one quarterback and four wide receivers, including Cam Phillips, who will be signing.

Yesterday, Carolina worked out three more players, including a former Falcons defensive end and two rookie defensive backs. Here’s a quick review.

DE Austin Larkin

Larkin (6-foot-3, 255 pounds) went undrafted after playing his college football at Notre Dame then Purdue. He has been on and off the Falcons roster for much of the last calendar year. In 2019, he played a total of 36 snaps, mostly on special teams.

DB DeMarkus Acy

Acy (6-foot-2, 195 pounds) is a product of Missouri, where he posted three interceptions and 20 pass breakups in 38 games. The Panthers have plenty of speed and athleticism in their defensive backfield, but not much size and length, which could help Acy if he signs.

CB Jameson Houston

Finally, Carolina also worked out another guy who played for Matt Rhule at Baylor. Houston (5-foot-11, 199 pounds) posted a career-high 44 tackles and eight pass breakups as a senior last season. Fellow former Baylor cornerback Derrek Thomas left practice early yesterday, so it’s possible his spot could go to Houston if he has a significant injury.

Titans waive OLB Josh Smith, work out two players

The Titans continue to make moves at the outside linebacker position.

Outside linebacker and Vanderbilt product Josh Smith, who was the last Tennessee Titans player remaining on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, was activated and then waived on Saturday, the team announced.

Smith spent parts of the 2019 season on the Titans’ practice squad. Smith, rookie offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson and veteran defensive lineman Jack Crawford all spent time on the COVID-19 list recently.

Tennessee also took a look at a few more outside linebackers after holding workouts for Austin Larkin and Chris Peace, a pair of players who went undrafted in 2019.

Peace played for both the New York Giants (four games) and Los Angeles Chargers (one game) in 2019. He was in for a grand total of 21 snaps on special teams and three on defense.

As an interesting side note, Peace completed an internship with NASA earlier this offseason.

Larkin took part in one game with the Atlanta Falcons last season, totaling one tackle. He played 26 snaps on special teams and 10 on defense.

Falcons waive DE Austin Larkin, two undrafted free agents

The Atlanta Falcons continue to tweak their roster as the team tries to get down to 80 players by the NFL’s August 16 deadline.

The Atlanta Falcons continue to tweak their roster as the team tries to get down to 80 players by the NFL’s August 16 deadline.

Defensive end Austin Larkin along with undrafted free agents LB Bryson Young and CB Rojesterman Farris were waived on Tuesday, as reported by ESPN’s Vaughn McClure below:

This comes just a day after the team released P Ryan Allen, OT Scottie Dill, OL Austin Capps, TE Caleb Repp and LB Jordan Williams.

The Falcons currently have six players on the reserve/COVID-19 list — FB Keith Smith, LB Foye Oluokun, S Jaylinn Hawkins, DT Tyeler Davison, CB Jamal Carter and QB Danny Etling — after just a week of camp.

These six players on the COVID-19 list don’t currently count towards the active roster, leaving Atlanta’s total at 77 players.

Falcons promote DE Austin Larkin to active roster

Defensive ends Vic Beasley and Takk McKinley have combined for 3.5 sacks since Week 10, but Atlanta may be without McKinley, who was ruled questionable for Week 12.

The Falcons struggled to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks during their first eight games, but have suddenly turned things around over the last two weeks.

Defensive ends Vic Beasley and Takk McKinley have combined for 3.5 sacks since Week 10, but Atlanta may be without McKinley, who was ruled questionable for Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers.

The team released guard Sean Harlow and signed defensive end Austin Larkin from the practice squad to its active roster.

Larkin has yet to play in an NFL regular season game but was impressive during the preseason with the Falcons. The 24-year-old former Purdue standout should finally make his NFL debut against the Bucs.

Harlow will likely be re-signed to the practice squad as his release was more about the team needing to add depth to its defensive line with McKinley questionable and Adrian Clayborn dinged up.

Atlanta will look to win its third straight game in Week 12, and opened as a 4.5-point favorite over Tampa Bay.
