Senior infielder Ryan Targac chosen to wear No. 12

Coach Jim Schlossnagle has chosen which Aggie will have the honor of wearing No. 12 for the 2024 season

Head baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle announced on Tuesday that Ryan Targac would follow in the footsteps of Troy Claunch & Austin Bost by wearing No. 12 for the 2024 season.

The honor of wearing No. 12 was established by Schlossnagle and his staff during the 2022 season and is typically awarded to a player in his last year of eligibility that has exemplified the core values of the university and program at a very high level.

Targac spoke on what it means for him to be chosen to wear the number 12 for the Aggie baseball team.

“Being named No. 12 is such an honor to me,” To be able to represent Texas A&M and what it stands for is such a privilege. I wouldn’t be in this position if it weren’t for God, my family, coaches, and teammates. The work still continues though. I will continue to show up and be the best version of myself and to serve others.”

Targac will no doubt represent the number well and we are eager to see the Aggie baseball team take the field on February 16th.

Projecting where Aggie prospects could land in the 2023 MLB Draft

Ahead of the 2023 MLB Draft, which begins Sunday night, Texas A&M has no shortage of prospects who could hear their names called.

The 2023 MLB Draft kicks off on Sunday, July 9, and carries through Tuesday, July 11, in Seattle. This marks the second straight year that the event has coincided with the MLB All-Star Game, and it could also feature a handful of Texas A&M prospects.

Ahead of the start of Round 1 of the draft, which opens at 5 p.m. CT on Sunday, Texas A&M will have no shortage of potential prospects who could, realistically, hear their names called. Granted, the top of the draft is arguably reserved for the likes of LSU‘s Paul Skenes, Dylan Crews, and Florida‘s Wyatt Langford, who are all expected to be off the board in the top five. But once it’s all said and done, a handful of Aggies could be making their way to the big leagues next year.

Outfielders Brett Minnich and Jordan Thompson, relievers Matt Dillard (LHP) and Carson Lambert (RHP), and second baseman Austin Bost all saw their college eligibility come to a close and will look to make the jump to the majors.

Additionally, LHPs Evan Aschenbeck, Will Johnston, Brandyn Garcia, RHP Nathan Dettmer, shortstop Hunter Haas, third baseman Trevor Werner, first baseman Jack Moss, and utility Ryan Targac have a chance to become professional.

Dettmer, Haas, and Moss all made the first stop on that journey after showcasing their skills at the MLB Draft Combine last month in Phoenix.

As shared through GigEm247, here is a look at which former, current, and potentially future A&M players are in the MLB.com Top 250 and ESPN Top 300 prospect rankings. The slot value for each projected pick is included as well.

MLB.com Top 250

Round 3, No. 79: Flower Mound (Texas) Marcus outfielder Caden Sorrell – $901,500

Round 6, No. 188: Haas – $295,000

ESPN Top 300

Round 3, No. 77: Sorrell – $930,600

Round 6, No. 180: Grahovac – $314,800

Round 6, No. 187: Dettmer – $297,400

Round 7, No. 201: Haas – $265,500

Round 7, No. 216: Montgomery County (Texas) Lake Creek RHP Weston Moss – $235,000

Aggie senior Austin Bost reflects on his Texas A&M career in touching final interview

Austin Bost reflects on his time at Texas A&M and what it has meant to him over the years

Time is something you can never get back. So, however you choose to use it comes at a cost and hopefully results in lasting memories. Austin Bost came to Texas A&M in 2020 after achieving All-Conference First Team honors at Panola College. He eventually worked himself into the starting lineup and earned All-SEC honors.

In 2023 Coach Jim Schlossnagle and the staff chose Bost to wear number 12 for the season because of his leadership, competitiveness, and selflessness. Bost wore the number with pride and represented the Aggie family well.

But all good things must end at some point, and unfortunately for Bost and the Aggie Baseball team, it needed in Northern California against Stanford. After winning back-to-back games to the Regional Final, Stanford beat Texas A&M twice, sending them home earlier than pre-season predictions could have foreseen.

With the season over and his playing career at Texas A&M ending, Bost spoke about his time as an Aggie, plus what it meant to return for his senior year.

Austin Bost was a joy to watch, and I’m happy I chose to spend some of my time watching him play.

Jim Schlossnagle, Austin Bost, and Nathan Dettmer speak after Texas A&M’s season-ending loss to Stanford (NCAA Regional)

After losing 7-1 to Stanford in the Regional Final, Jim Schlossnagle, Austin Bost, and Nathan Dettmer spoke for a final time this season.

Texas A&M’s 2023 Baseball season ended Monday night after falling to Stanford 7-1 in the Regional Final, destroying any hope of a brief revival of the Lone Star Showdown as the Cardinal will now face the Texas Longhorns in the Super Regional.

The Loss had to be frustrating for junior RHP Nathan Dettmer, who, in his first start in the Tournament, struck out eight batters in six innings, which on any other night would have been more than enough for an Aggie offense that seemed to have found consistency at the plate, freshman outfielder Jace Laviolette’s second-inning home run to take a 1-0 lead was all the Aggies could muster.

Texas A&M’s 2023 season cannot and should not be defined by one loss, especially after winning six of their final eight SEC series, earning a spot in the SEC title game, and advancing to a Super Regional is nothing to scoff at. Going into the offseason, head coach Jim Schlossnagle is tasked with making additions and avoiding subtractions through the transfer portal, especially in the bullpen.

After the game, Jim Schlossnagle, Austin Bost, and Nathan Dettmer spoke for a final time this season to reflect on the loss while Bost’s memorable Aggie career officially ended. Here is what all three had to say.

Social Media Reacts to Aggies drumming of HCU

Social Media reactions to 23-0 win on the HCU Huskies

It’s always fun to watch your favorite team put up enough points so the backups can get some quality work in during the season. Tuesday night in College Station was such a time for that opportunity. The Aggies got hit after hit and walk after walk that led to a 23-0 win over the HCU Huskies to win their second straight.

This has been an up-and-down season for the offense and some of the better hitters from last year have been a little cold to start this year. So, the 17-hit game after a strong 9th inning for the comeback win over Portland has the Aggies trending in the right direction.

Austin Bost had his best game so far this season and earned his 100th RBI before the night was out. He went 3 for 4, two doubles, a Grand slam home, and 6 RBIs. Below he gives his thoughts on the game and the early season struggles.

“We knew we were struggling, trying to find ourselves,” senior second baseman Austin Bost said. “But we weren’t nervous … we knew we just had to trust the process and we knew good things were coming.”

“It was a load of fun,” Bost said. “Being able to come out here and have fun … that’s the big thing.”

I’m going to enjoy this win by soaking in some of the social media reactions during the game. Check them out with us below.
