UNC football’s highest remaining Class of 2025 recruit re-assures his commitment

A phone call with Bill Belichick landed the UNC football team another recruiting commitment.

If you’re a high school or college football player and you get a call from Bill Belichick, pick up the phone.

On Sunday, December 15, UNC football recruiting target Austin Alexander did exactly that.

Alexander, a 4-star defensive end from Burlington, Ky. who will graduate from Cooper High School soon and join North Carolina for the Fenway Bowl, reassured his commitment to UNC after a Sunday conversation with Belichick.

“He (Belichick) really spoke more about, ‘This is how we will use you coming in,’” Austin’s dad, Durran Alexander, told Cincinnati’s WCPO 9 ABC News. “How we will use your skills.”

In the same story, the elder Alexander said it’s a blessing his son will get to play for Belichick.

After the Tar Heels fired Mack Brown in late November, their future recruiting classes faced uncertainty. 2026 4-star edge rusher Zavion Griffin-Haynes de-committed, while 4-star quarterback Bryce Baker – who remained committed – said he was going to look at other programs.

Getting a re-assurance from Alexander is yet another Tar Heels recruiting victory. With Desmond Evans out of eligibility and Kaimon Rucker recently declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft, Alexander has a clear spot to starting from Day One.

Alexander totaled 245 tackles, 42.5 sacks and 26 tackles for loss in his high school career, which ended in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association 5A State Championship on Dec. 7. In short, Alexander produces and will bring his motor to a UNC unit that drastically improved in 2024.

Will Haynes join Alexander in pledging his loyalty to North Carolina? Will any other former Tar Heel targets – and uncommitted guys – select Chapel Hill as their college football destination?

Wisconsin’s class of 2025 ranks No. 20 in the nation with eight players committed. Defensive line remains one of the thinnest positions on the roster as Luke Fickell, Mike Tressel and Phil Longo continue to work to install their respective systems.

Class of 2024 cornerback decommits from Wisconsin

Austin Alexander, a three-star cornerback from Chicago Heights, Illinois decommitted from the Badgers on Wednesday.

Austin Alexander, a three-star cornerback from Chicago Heights, Illinois decommitted from the Badgers on Wednesday. The class of 2024 athlete has decided to reopen his recruitment and could still remain an option for the Badgers moving forward.

The cornerback originally made the decision to commit to Wisconsin in late October, but that was under a completely different coaching staff. With all the additions and hype around the program since Luke Fickell took over as head coach in late November, Alexander may have seen his expected role diminish in front of his eyes.

As a result of his decommitment, four-star quarterback Mabrey Mettauer (The Woodlands, Texas) is the lone recruit that the Badgers currently have set to join the program as a part of the class of 2024.

The Badgers may have found their next quarterback of the future.

The Badgers may have found their next quarterback of the future.

On Christmas Eve, The Woodlands (Texas) four-star QB Mabrey Mettauer announced his commitment to Wisconsin.

Mettauer (6-foot-5, 225 pounds) is ranked No. 21 at his position in the class of 2024 and No. 41 in the state of Texas. He led the Highlanders to a 10-3 record this past season.

A dynamic dual-threat quarterback, Mettauer has put up some very-impressive numbers over the last two seasons. He’s thrown for over 5,000 passing yards and 57 touchdowns to go with 11 interceptions. As a rusher, he’s totaled 1,057 yards and scored 24 touchdowns.

Here’s a look at Mettauer’s Junior year highlights.

Wisconsin beat out 23 other schools who made offers to Mettauer, including Florida, LSU and Colorado. He’s the second commitment of the Badgers’ 2024 class – the other being Marian Catholic (Ill.) cornerback Austin Alexander.

Wisconsin lands a commitment from 2024 three-star CB Austin Alexander

Wisconsin football secures its first verbal commitment in the 2024 recruiting class:

Madison, Wis. – On Monday, just a few weeks removed from an unofficial visit to Madison, Jim Leonhard and his coaching staff received their first verbal commitment in the 2024 recruiting cycle from three-star cornerback Austin Alexander out of Chicago Heights, Illinois.

Per the 247Sports recruiting rankings, he’s the No. 49 CB in the country and the No. 14 player in Illinois.

For Alexander, an under-the-radar prospect, Wisconsin was his only division-one offer, although he reportedly received interest from Miami (Ohio), Illinois, Iowa State, and Northern Illinois.

According to MaxPreps, the 6-foot-1, 165-pound defensive back totaled 49 tackles, seven interceptions, and a defensive touchdown for Marian Catholic High School in Illinois.

There is plenty of upside in Alexander’s game, leaving some to suggest he has yet to scratch the surface of his potential. He has good length, ball skills, and projectable size for the next level.

The Illinois native announced his verbal commitment to the University of Wisconsin on social media:
