Rutgers basketball got an impressive and gutsy win on Wednesday night.

Rutgers answered the bell on Wednesday night, overcoming a 12-point deficit in the second half to emerge with an 87-82 overtime win over Nebraska in a hard-fought battle.

Down 63-51 with 8:22 left in the game, Rutgers pulled off the impressive comeback and were the better team in overtime.

As the Scarlet Knights improved to 10-7 (2-4 Big Ten) on the season, they were led on the night by Aundre Hyatt and Mawot Mag. That talented duo combined for 37 points and came through in overtime. Two free throws from Hyatt made it an 83- 79 game with less than a minute left in overtime, giving the Scarlet Knights a lead they would not relinquish.

Additionally, Rutgers dominated in the paint, scoring 34 points while only allowing 24. Their play in the paint was key as Rutgers slowly put the game out of reach.

 

While the Cornhuskers hard work went unrewarded, they still had some strong performances on the road. Those include the play of Brice Williams, who led the way offensively with 22 points. It marked the first time since he reached the 20-point mark since November 18. He got some help from Keisi Tominaga, who added 16 points.

Although Rutgers was far from perfect, they showed a lot of grit in this game. They were able to wear down the Cornhuskers and end their losing streak in conference play.

Rutgers men’s basketball lost on Sunday, a 73-55 decision at Michigan State. Rutgers was able to keep the game close in the first half before the Spartans took over in the final 20 minutes.

The loss drops Rutgers to 9-7 (1-4 Big Ten).

Michigan State was led by Malik Hall and Tyson Walker in their second straight win. Hall scored more than 10 points for the second straight game, adding 15 to his resume. Walker continued to be a scoring machine with 13 points. He has scored at least 10 points every game this season.

In this matchup, Rutgers only turned the ball over 10 times, but Michigan State built their lead on three-pointers. The Spartans shot 48 percent from beyond the arc.

However, that was not enough to stop Michigan State. In the second half, they outscored Rutgers 45-33. That included a 19-0 run in a four-and-a-half-minute span that put the game out of reach. As a result, Rutgers is now 1-4 in conference play.

With their 16th game of the season in the books, Rutgers will shift its focus to its next game against Nebraska on Wednesday. The Cornhuskers are 3-3 in conference play this season.

Rutgers men’s basketball got a big lift with a midweek win over Indiana.

On Tuesday night, Rutgers men’s basketball finally got their first Big Ten win of the season in their fourth try. Rutgers beat Indiana 66-57 as five players,Rincluding Mawot Mag, scored double figures. While Mag continued to be a scoring machine, he got help from various sources.

Along with Mag, Aundre Hyatt, Derek Simpson, Austin Williams and JaMichael Davis had at least 10 points. Hyatt’s play, in particular, stood out since he is Rutgers’s leading score. Before Tuesday’s win, he had not scored more than nine points in a game since December 30th.

As Rutgers rolled to their ninth win of the season, they were able to take care of the Hoosiers mistakes. Indiana turned the ball over 18 times, allowing 18 points off turnovers. Their largest lead of the night was seven points.

 

While Tuesday night didn’t go as planned for Indiana, there were still a few bright spots. That includes the talented trio of Malik Reneau, Mackenzie Mgbako, and Kel’el Ware. They each scored 13 points and Ware had a big night on the boards with 13 rebounds.

On Tuesday, Indiana will take on a Rutgers team still looking for their first win in January. The Scarlet Knights have lost two straight games, both against Big Ten opponents. Against the Hoosiers, they have an excellent opportunity to get their first conference win of the season.

Entering this matchup, Mawot Mag is coming off the best game of his collegiate career. Against Iowa on Saturday, the talented forward scored 24 points. He was also a monster on the boards with ten rebounds.

While Mag’s play has been encouraging, Rutgers needs Clifford Omoruyi and Aundre Hyatt to step up. Omoruyi has scored less than ten points in two straight games. In that span, Hyatt has only scored 18 points and struggled from three-point range.

As Rutgers looks to secure their eighth win of the season, this game represents a perfect opportunity for their stars to have a big night. Additionally, Mississippi State shut down one of Rutgers best players, Clifford Omoruyi. After scoring a career-high 25 points against Long Island last Saturday, he only scored three points in 20 minutes. He also struggled on the boards and did not record a rebound.
