Five takeaways from LSU Basketball’s win over Ole Miss

The LSU Tigers were led by Trendon Watford with 21 points as the team took down Ole Miss 75-61 on Saturday.

LSU basketball defeated Ole Miss 75-61 on Saturday night in Oxford, Mississippi. The two teams were not supposed to play each other, but Missouri had coronavirus concerns.

The Tigers were originally set to play at Missouri, but when that game was postponed, Ole Miss stepped in and decided to host LSU.

LSU led 39-21 at halftime but were outscored 40-36 in the second half. Still, LSU held on for the 14 point victory.

Will Wade’s team could now become ranked in the AP Top 25 poll come Monday with the Tigers winning both of its games this week. LSU now sits at 8-2 on the season.

Here are five takeaways from the Tigers’ 75-61 win over the Rebels.

Trendon Watford starting to take over

The Tigers sophomore forward scored 21 points on 7-of-16 shooting in 31 minutes of action to propel the team to another win. With freshman sensation Cam Thomas only playing four minutes, someone had to step up.

Watford did just that and more. Though he gets overshadowed by Thomas, LSU’s sophomore star took the reigns of the team on Saturday.

He finished 2-of-4 from beyond the arc and went a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line.

LSU basketball defeats Georgia in overtime

The LSU Tigers had to go to overtime against Georgia, but squeezed out a 94-92 win behind 26 points from Cam Thomas.

The LSU Tigers basketball team defeated the Georgia Bulldogs 94-92 in overtime on Wednesday inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

The Tigers entered the game with a 6-2 record and were coming off an 83-79 loss at Florida last Saturday, while Georgia came in at 7-1, with the lone loss coming to Mississippi State last week.

LSU improves to 7-2 with the win. Freshman Cameron Thomas scored 26 total points to lead the Tigers to the two point victory. Eight of his 26 came in overtime. Thomas’ 26 points came on 5-of-17 shooting in 35 minutes of action.

The game was tied at 42 going into halftime. Both teams scored 38 in the second half to go to extra time. Tigers guard Javonte Smart hit back to back three pointers to send the game to overtime. He finished the game with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting in 39 minutes on the court.

LSU sophomore forward Trendon Watford scored 17 of his own to help lead the Tigers to a big SEC win on 6-of-9 shooting. Aundre Hyatt scored six points off the bench for the Tigers in the win.

Justin Kier led Georgia in scoring with 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting including a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line.

The Tigers shot 44.3% from the floor on 31-of-70 shooting as a team. Georgia shot 47.9% on 34-of-71 field goals made in the loss.

Georgia had the upper hand behind the three point line as the team shot 34.3% to LSU’s 33.3%. The Bulldogs’ largest lead was 10 points, while LSU’s largest lead was 7.

Both teams shot 66.7% from the free throw line. Coming in, both teams were gaining steam in the paint, and Wednesday showed that the Tigers continue to get better in that area on the court.

The win pushes LSU to 2-1 in SEC play. Currently, the Tigers are tied for fourth place in the conference standings with No. 9 Tennessee, Florida and Mississippi State.

Up next, LSU travels to Columbia, Missouri, to face the No. 13 Missouri Tigers on Saturday. Tip off is slated for 7:30 pm CST on SEC Network.
