Auburn drops in latest AP Poll but maintains top ranking in the SEC

Auburn slides in the AP Poll but remain in the top five.

It was a wild Saturday for the college basketball landscape as the final regular-season games are upon us and conference tournaments close in. The Auburn Tigers were among the top six teams that all fell on Saturday.

Bruce Pearl was bested by his old team 67-62 in Knoxville and Auburn fell in the polls once again. After finally achieving the No. 1 spot in the AP Poll several weeks ago, they are now No. 5. The Tigers still clinging on to the highest ranking in the SEC.

The Kentucky Wildcats also lost on Saturday in a wild game against the Arkansas Razorbacks. UK is now No. 7 in the polls while the Razorbacks climbed to No. 14, tied with Houston. The Tennessee Vols climbed four spots after the win over Auburn to No. 13. The Alabama Crimson Tide round out the top 25 SEC teams at No. 25, falling one spot this week.

No team climbed higher than the Baylor Bears, who knocked off the Kansas Jayhawks over the weekend. The defending national champions are now No. 3 in the polls. The UCLA Bruins were the big losers as they fell five spots in the rankings.

LSU was the only SEC team to receive votes but not make the top 25, the Tigers received seven total votes from AP voters.

Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes didn’t like ‘overrated’ chant directed at Auburn

Rick Barnes took offense to the ‘overrated’ chant in Saturday’s game against Auburn.

On Saturday it was a hard fought matchup between two of the top teams in the SEC. After building an early first-half lead, the Auburn Tigers were unable to fend off the Tennessee Vols in hostile territory. As is the case in most venues, the fans were very into the game and let the Tigers hear it with their overrated chant.

Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes wasn’t a fan of the ‘overrated’ chant from the fanbase directed at Auburn.

“Wherever I have been, when fans start doing that, I am like, ‘Stop,'” Barnes said. “Give us credit. Don’t demean what we just did. We just beat an outstanding basketball team.”

Going into the game Auburn was ranked No. 3 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll while Tennessee was the No. 17. The win gave the Vols their 20th win on the season. Still, Barnes believes Auburn is a really good top-five team despite losing three of their last six games.

“You just had a great, quality win against a team that first of all is not (overrated),” Barnes said. “Your fans are acting like you beat nobody. Well, we did. We just beat a top-five team. One, they are not overrated. Two, to me, it diminishes that you just won a great game against an outstanding basketball team.”

Wherever Barnes has coached during his head coaching career, which started in 1987 at George Mason, he hasn’t been a fan of the chant.

“I have thought that my entire career,” Barnes said. “I have never enjoyed it when fans do that. Our guys work too hard and won a game against an outstanding team today.”

Jabari Smith draws comparison to Kevin Durant

Tennessee coach Rick Barnes gives Jabari Smith high praise.

On Saturday afternoon Auburn forward Jabari Smith did everything he could to get the Tigers the win. He led the way in the scoring department but it was all for not as Tennessee came from behind to win the game. Following the game, Vols head coach Rick Barnes addressed the game and Smith’s play.

“Bruce (Pearl) is a very smart coach and a terrific basketball coach. When you’ve got a guy like that (Smith),” Barnes said as he paused in his postgame press conference. He then compared him to one of his former players at Texas. “I mean, Kevin Durant, we had a team where six out of the top seven were freshmen, and he played 36 minutes for a reason. He averaged 26 points a game. It’s hard not to give him the ball because it’s not like they’re selfish players. You know they’ll make the right read if they get double-teamed and pass the ball.”

That is some high praise for the freshman. During his lone season with the Longhorns, Durant won the college basketball player of the year award in 2007. He was also a consensus All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year. In 2007, Durant averaged 25.8 points per game with 11.1 rebounds, 1.9 steals, and 1.9 blocks.

In his freshman season, Smith has put together 16.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.2 steals, and one block per game. The numbers are quite equal, but Smith does have a similar size to Durant. Both are tall and long shooters that can score inside and out. Against the Vols, Smith scored 27 points with eight rebounds and two blocks. It was his third game in the last four times out that Smith had at least 27 points.

For the Tigers to make a run at the national championship, it will like come on the shoulders of their freshman sensation.

Cold second half dooms Auburn in Knoxville

Jabari Smith’s 27 points not enough to hold off Tennessee.

It was a battle early on between the Auburn Tigers and Tennesee Vols, as the two went back and forth.

Facing a 19-13 deficit in the latter part of the first half, the Tigers defense put on the pressure and the offense answered with a 13-0 run. The Vols were finally able to stop the bleeding as they cut into the Auburn lead 26-21 with under three to play until halftime.

The Vols were cleaning the class in the first half, they pulled down 11 offensive rebounds leading to 10 second-chance points. Tennessee was getting those opportunities due to the 23 missed shots early on. They were shooting 28.1% from the floor.

Jabari led the way in the first half with 11 points, five rebounds, and one block. Walker Kessler was held to just two points in the first half with four rebounds and two blocks. Wendell Green Jr provided the energy with five points, five rebounds, and four steals off the bench.

Coming out in the second half, it got chippy with Smith and Tennessee’s Uros Plavsic. It culminated in Smith getting a very questionable technical foul called against him. It was a lot of sloppy play to open the second half as emotions ran high for both teams.

Once Smith and Kessler went to the bench, the Vols were able to make a run to get the game tied at 39 with under 13 to go. During this stretch, the Tigers went a full five minutes without a single field goal, their two points coming from Smith at the charity stripe. KD Johnson finally broke through. with under eight to go in the game.

Down the stretch, Auburn just couldn’t stop the bleeding with the lack of scoring. The team went from the 16:42 mark of the second half to 7:19 between field goals. Following the cold streak being snapped, Tennessee did basically what they wanted. Tigers were down 11 with 3:38 left in the game and they needed some Jabari magic to happen to win this game.

Smith wouldn’t score until 1:08 remaining when he sunk both free throw attempts after getting fouled on a jump shot. The Tigers trailed 63-56 at that point of the game. On the following inbound, Smith nailed a three-pointer in which he was fouled. He added another free throw on the four-point play. Despite getting within three, it just wasn’t enough.

Auburn dropped their fourth game of the year, 67-62. Smith led the team with 27 points.

How to watch No. 3 Auburn men’s basketball vs. Tennessee

This should be a great game.

Auburn will look to make it seven straight wins over Tennessee Vols on Saturday. It will be no simple feat though, as No. 4 Auburn (25-3, 13-2 SEC)has lost their last two road games and Tennessee has not lost at home.

No. 17 Tennessee has already beaten several top-ranked teams at home, beating No. 2 Arizona and No. 6 Kentucky in Thompson-Boling Arena this season.

This rivalry game will once again have implications for the regular-season SEC title. Auburn has a one-game lead on Kentucky and is just two games ahead of Tennessee and Arkansas.

A win in Knoxville would be Auburn’s second-best of the season, trailing the home victory over Kentucky in January. To do so they will need to beat one of the top defenses in the country.

The Vols rank third in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency rankings (87.9),  45th in opponent field goal percentage (40.7%) and ninth in steal rate (13.8%).

On the positive, Auburn will have several players coming off of strong performances against Ole Miss.

Zep Jasper had his best scoring game of the season, scoring 15 points and making 4-of-5 3-pointers. Wendell Green Jr. also looked to have snapped his cold streak, scoring 14 points. He also had five rebounds and four assists.

Auburn vs Tennessee Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

The Tigers have had to fight a bit too hard over the last few games, but they’ve been able to win three of the last four after losing at Arkansas.

They continue to be great defensively – seven of the last nine teams failed to get to 40% from the field – and they’ve been better moving the ball around.

How do you know the Tiger offense is working? The assists.

Auburn failed to get to ten assists just twice all year – once was in the loss to Arkansas, and the other was in the loss at Florida. The offense was able to get to double-digit assists in every other game with the only loss coming to UConn way back in November.

Tennessee has allowed fewer than ten assists just once in nine of the last ten games in 15 of the last 17.

But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Tennessee Will Win

Tennessee has been lights out at home going 14-0 including a blowout win over Kentucky last week.

It shoots well overall no matter what, but it’s particularly great at home, it was on fire from three against UK, hit 20-of-23 from the free throw line, and it didn’t get destroyed on the boards.

Yeah, Auburn has to move the ball around well to win – and it will – but Tennessee leads the SEC in assists per game and is among the nation at generating steals.

Auburn isn’t all that bad when it comes to turnovers, but it’s been struggling a bit lately compared to earlier in the year with ten or more in nine of the last ten games.

Top 25 Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

Tennessee is too good at home, and Auburn has lost its last two on the road.

The Tigers will rise up defensively to keep this close, but the Volunteers should be able to shoot over the top of the D and should have just enough points off of turnovers to matter.

It’ll be a fun, spirited game with a whole lot of energy. Tennessee will hang on in the final moments.

Why Tennessee Will Win

Can Jarrett Guarantano somehow recreate the magic of a few years ago?

The Vols were able to beat Auburn in 2018 when Guarantano went off for 328 yards, two touchdown passes, and a whole slew of big plays. The Vols either need him to catch fire, or hope the experience Harrison Bailey got in the Arkansas game is enough to be ready to step in and give the Tigers trouble.

Auburn might be finding ways to come up with wins, but the defense hasn’t been great at getting off the field – Tennessee has to somehow keep the chains moving. The Tiger pass defense got hit by LSU for 315 yards, and the run D that got ripped up by Ole Miss a few weeks ago.

There isn’t one glaring weakness on the AU D, but it’s generally just okay. However …

Why Auburn Will Win

Tennessee is a strange mess. The offense that looked like it would grow into a thing after the first three weeks just sort of stopped. Granted, Kentucky keeps scores low and Alabama is Alabama, but the 302 yards put up in 31-point loss to the Tide marked the only time the Vols get over 300 in the last four games.

The running game isn’t working, the passing attack managed 107 yards against Arkansas, and nothing seems to be happening even with the offensive line not playing all that poorly.

Auburn has its issues – congrats on being the last win in the Will Muschamp era at South Carolina – but it’s finding ways to win.

Did it catch a break against Ole Miss? Yeah. Did it catch a monster break against Ole Miss? Oh yeah. But it’s the SEC. If you’re 4-2, you won four games, you take them, you don’t ask questions, and you move on.

As much as Bo Nix and the passing game have to do a better job of clicking, the offense has managed both 200 yards rushing and receiving in each of the last three games, and is coming off its best performance of the season with a big day against LSU.

What’s Going To Happen

The losing coach in this won’t be Muschamped, but the fan base will get really, really, really grouchy.

Auburn has more of its stuff together and should be consistent enough offensively to survive – at least compared to Tennessee. The Vols don’t do any one offensive thing well, and the defense isn’t taking the ball away enough to matter.

Auburn (24-6) vs. Tennessee (17-13) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Auburn Will Win

The Tigers came up with a 73-66 win just a few weeks ago at home over the Vols. They got out rebounded and outshot, but they won with relative ease by forcing lots and lots of turnovers.

The Vols might have a great defense, and they come up with a whole lot of blocked shots, but they alway give up a whole lot of mistakes. Auburn doesn’t generate a whole lot of pressure, but it can force easy points.

Do that, hit from three against a shaky Tennessee defense from the outside, and the offense should click again.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Tennessee Will Win

Auburn’s been lousy lately.

It lost its last two games and four of its last six – around the win over Tennessee – by going dead-cold from three way too often.

The 1-of-17 performance was an issue against Missouri, but overall the threes just haven’t been falling. Even in the win over Tennessee, AU only hit 35% from the outside.

The Vols are too good defensively on the inside. As long as they’re not turning the ball over like they did in the first game they should be able to at least hang around.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s the final home game of the regular season for Tennessee in a must-win game. It’s been red hot from the field over the last few games, and it’ll stay strong with a big victory to keep NCAA Tournament hopes alive.
