Expert Picks: Does Auburn even their record on Saturday?

With Week 9 in the SEC set to kick off on Saturday, the Auburn Wire staff make their predictions for the Tigers matchup and the SEC slate.

After an open week for both teams, the Auburn Tigers and Arkansas Razorbacks get back to action in the SEC.

Prior to the bye, the Hogs took care of the BYU Cougars in Provo while the Tigers dropped another game where the opponents scored more than 40 points. The third this season, which ties a school record. They will look to avoid a third-straight game of opponents hitting the 40-mark after Georgia dropped 42 and Ole Miss added another 48.

The Auburn Wire staff make their picks for the X-Factors in the game against Arkansas as well as their game picks for the rest of the SEC slate of games. Will the Tigers lose their fourth straight game or will Bryan Harsin get his team back to .500 on Saturday?

Auburn vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

The No. 1 team in America got its scare against Georgia, and not it’s time to get back on track and get back up to speed.

At least that’s the conventional wisdom.

It was a tough shooting game against the Bulldogs, the threes weren’t falling, and the team was way too sloppy after a doing a nice job of protecting the ball for a few weeks.

For all of the good things Arkansas is doing lately – and despite going off on Georgia from the outside in a 99-73 bombing just a few days ago – it doesn’t do much from three, it’s not particularly great at guarding the three, and it tends to foul a bit too much at times.

However …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Arkansas Will Win

It’s sort of strange, but the Hogs don’t necessarily have to shoot well to win.

Of course that makes life easier, but when it’s not on, it’s got a way of making up for it on the offensive glass and also ramping up the pressure a bit.

In other words, if the Auburn defense locks down, it’s not the end of the world.

Auburn might still have just the one double-overtime loss to UConn from way back around Thanksgiving, but it’s been a bit shaky at times. It starts with the threes that just aren’t going in.

Again, the wins are there, but Auburn hasn’t made more than 27% of its threes in any of the last four games on in five of the last six.

What’s Going To Happen

Is Arkansas really that good, or has this hot run come because it played a slew of mediocre teams and LSU?

It might be a little of both – sorry for that lame line, but it’s sort of true.

The team schedule was easy when it suffered a midseason lull, and there haven’t been a ton of killers to face overall. On the plus side, the team has managed to get better and better as 2022 has gone on.

As good as Auburn is, it’s been grinding on the road. At home it rocks the party, but it struggled at Georgia. Struggled at Mizzou. Struggled a wee bit – but not much – at Ole Miss, and Alabama was a bit of a battle, even though it was in control.

Six of the team’s last eight road games were decided by six points or fewer,

This one will, too, but it’ll also get the win.

Losers from Auburn vs Arkansas

We’re happy to report that mistakes and losers were at a minimum against Arkansas.

What a win for Auburn on the road.

The Tigers needed a confidence boost heading into what is a daunting back half of the season, and they got it on the road in a 38-23 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Auburn’s running game hasn’t been a major factor for three straight games, but the Tigers have gotten it done. Bo Nix had a career day on the road, and had he not thrown the interception at the end of the first half, there would have been a real argument to have been made that this was his best performance in a game that mattered in his career. He just continues to step up even with his receivers dropping passes.

Here are five losers from Auburn’s win over Arkansas… but not all from the Auburn side.

First half takeaways from Auburn vs Arkansas

This is a tight game right now.

Auburn’s offense has been moving easier than I thought it would.

What’s even more surprising, is that the Tigers haven’t been able to run the ball well but the passing game has been consistent. Even though Nix through an interception late in the second. quarter, He’s been in rhythm with his receivers and tight ends.

It just feels like a matter of time before Arkansas rips off a huge run. Auburn’s run defense is not playing well right now, and Owen Pappoe and Marquis Burks are currently out with injuries.

Here are the first half takeaways as Auburn leads Arkansas 14-10.

SEC predictions for week 7

Does Auburn win on the road? Does Alabama do the unthinkable and lose two games in a row?

So Alabama lost to Texas A&M.

For the first time since 2007, Alabama lost to an unranked opponent. It was the first time Nick Saban lost to a former assistant. That was one of two games of the year, as Ole Miss had beaten Arkansas in a 52-51 thriller. College football has been amazing this season.

I went 6-1 in my picks last week to put me at 46-14 on the year. This week, five ranked SEC teams are on the road, three of them participating in cross-division games. Here’s to another solid week for my picks in the SEC.

Here are my SEC picks for week seven.

Auburn vs Arkansas: Where the Tigers have an advantage

Where does Auburn have an advantage over Arkansas?

Auburn’s matchup with Arkansas begins what is a brutal back half of the season for the Tigers.

The Tigers are current road dogs (ESPN’s FPI gives Arkansas a 60% chance to win) with current aspirations of making the SEC title game.

I don’t want to jinx it, but we’ve seen this movie before. A two-loss Auburn team, with only one loss in their conference? A brutal bottom half of the schedule? A vulnerable Alabama team that has to face Auburn at the end of the season?

I honestly don’t think it will happen again, for two reasons. One, Auburn isn’t as good as they were in 2017 in the trenches. Two, Bo Nix. If they’re going to make a push though, it starts with this Arkansas game.

Where does Auburn have an advantage? Here’s every position group matchup.

Will Auburn’s deteriorating run game wake up against Arkansas?

Can Auburn’s offense get up off the floor after being knocked out by Georgia last weekend?

Auburn’s offense has been slowly regressing as the season has gone on.

The Tigers started out the season hot with two 60+ point performances. In the four games since, Auburn is averaging 22 points per game. Not good.

While Auburn may not be able to throw the ball efficiently (due in part to the 23 drops the receivers have had this season), their dependent run game has slowly been shutting down.

Auburn ran for 364 yards against Alabama State. The following week, they ran for 182 against Penn State. Then 166 against Georga State, then 163 against LSU… and finally 39 yards against Georgia this past weekend.

Without good receiver play or even average receiver play, Auburn can’t sustain offense. Their run game is slowly dying because of it. Opponents have keyed into what Auburn wants to do with Tank Bigsby and Jarquez Hunter, and it has hurt them.

This weekend, the offense is tasked with scoring enough points to beat a top 20 team on the road. Can they do it?

No. 17 Arkansas (Auburn’s opponent this weekend) is 11th in the SEC in rushing yards allowed per game (181.5) and 10th in yards allowed per run (5.44). Even if Auburn’s passing game falters (which there’s a chance that it does), the Tigers should still be able to run the ball barring catastrophe.

They’re going to have to get something going to build momentum heading into the back half of the season. The SEC West title is still on the line.

Auburn vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

The passing game is putting up the yards.

Bo Nix and TJ Finley haven’t been all that accurate, and the downfield plays aren’t there like they need to be, but the offense has hit 250 yards or more in each of the last three games. That might not seem like anything special, but in the overall scheme of the offense, that’s good enough.

Basically, the Tigers have to get to 400 yards of total O.

They’re 4-0 when they get there, 0-2 when they don’t, and 15-1 in their last 16 games as a program when they’re able to get to the mark.

The offensive line has been solid – take the Georgia game out of the equation – there aren’t a ton of big mistakes, and defense is doing a great job of getting behind the line.

But …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Arkansas Will Win

Arkansas allowed over 600 yards of total offense to Ole Miss in last week’s loss. That was the only time all season the Hogs gave up more than 400 yards, and Auburn isn’t Ole Miss offensively.

Just like the Auburn loss to Georgia, blow off anything that happens against that defense – it’s playing at a whole other level. The offense made up for it with over 300 yards both passing and rushing in the thriller against Ole Miss – but that’s not how the team wants to play this.

Grind it out a bit with the ground game, rely on the terrific pass defense that held relatively firm even against Matt Corral, and expect Auburn to continue to be just okay – it hasn’t hit 190 rushing yards in any of the last four games – running the ball.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Auburn has been solid, but this is when the season has to pivot with Ole Mis sup next, followed up by a trip to Texas A&M, followed up by Mississippi State, at South Carolina, and Alabama.

At 4-2, this is hardly a must win here, but finding two absolutely sure wins on the slate to get bowl eligible after this isn’t easy.

Arkansas has been fantastic – at least compared to expectations. At 4-2, the slide will stop with Arkansas-Pine Bluff next week if there’s a misfire against the Tigers, but there won’t be any need to stress about getting bowl eligible.

The Hogs will go back to doing what they do so well. They’ll get great offensive line play, the running game will come up with just enough big bursts to matter, and the team will overcome yet another penalty-filled day by controlling the tempo of the game throughout.

Expect more of a defensive grind than many might think.
