Auburn vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why Auburn Will Win

The passing game is putting up the yards.

Bo Nix and TJ Finley haven’t been all that accurate, and the downfield plays aren’t there like they need to be, but the offense has hit 250 yards or more in each of the last three games. That might not seem like anything special, but in the overall scheme of the offense, that’s good enough.

Basically, the Tigers have to get to 400 yards of total O.

They’re 4-0 when they get there, 0-2 when they don’t, and 15-1 in their last 16 games as a program when they’re able to get to the mark.

The offensive line has been solid – take the Georgia game out of the equation – there aren’t a ton of big mistakes, and defense is doing a great job of getting behind the line.

But …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Arkansas Will Win

Arkansas allowed over 600 yards of total offense to Ole Miss in last week’s loss. That was the only time all season the Hogs gave up more than 400 yards, and Auburn isn’t Ole Miss offensively.

Just like the Auburn loss to Georgia, blow off anything that happens against that defense – it’s playing at a whole other level. The offense made up for it with over 300 yards both passing and rushing in the thriller against Ole Miss – but that’s not how the team wants to play this.

Grind it out a bit with the ground game, rely on the terrific pass defense that held relatively firm even against Matt Corral, and expect Auburn to continue to be just okay – it hasn’t hit 190 rushing yards in any of the last four games – running the ball.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Auburn has been solid, but this is when the season has to pivot with Ole Mis sup next, followed up by a trip to Texas A&M, followed up by Mississippi State, at South Carolina, and Alabama.

At 4-2, this is hardly a must win here, but finding two absolutely sure wins on the slate to get bowl eligible after this isn’t easy.

Arkansas has been fantastic – at least compared to expectations. At 4-2, the slide will stop with Arkansas-Pine Bluff next week if there’s a misfire against the Tigers, but there won’t be any need to stress about getting bowl eligible.

The Hogs will go back to doing what they do so well. They’ll get great offensive line play, the running game will come up with just enough big bursts to matter, and the team will overcome yet another penalty-filled day by controlling the tempo of the game throughout.

Expect more of a defensive grind than many might think.

BetMGM has Auburn as sizable underdogs to Arkansas for Wednesday night’s matchup

Auburn will enter Wednesday night’s matchup against Arkansas in Fayetteville as sizable underdogs.

Auburn will try to run its winning streak to three straight games while also getting revenge against Arkansas for a loss earlier this season when the Tigers take on the Razorbacks on Wednesday night in Fayetteville.

Despite the addition of Sharife Cooper to the Tigers’ lineup for the last three games, BetMGM still has the Razorbacks as sizable favorites at 7.5 points heading into the contest.

Arkansas and Auburn battled in each teams’ SEC season opener in Auburn Arena back on December 30, a 97-85 Razorbacks victory. That, though, was without the star freshman point guard in Cooper has come on in the last three games and made the Tigers’ offense much more productive.

Here are the rest of the lines from BetMGM for SEC action on Wednesday night:

Kentucky (-4.5) at Georgia

SEC releases statement on Bo Nix spike play near end of game

It was a controversial ending in Auburn as the Tigers walked away with a 30-28 victory.

It was a controversial ending in Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday as Bo Nix lined up under center to take a snap, fumbled said snap and then spiked the ball backwards.

While Arkansas fans are fairly upset about the ruling considering Anders Carlson made the game-winning field goal a play later, the SEC has issued a statement on the call.

Yeah, we are still considering the Tigers lucky to walk away with the win.

Throwback Thursday: Relive Auburn’s 2010 high-scoring win over Arkansas

Auburn and Arkansas met up in a top-15 matchup in 2010 and the scoreboard operator was extremely busy.

Defense was optional when No. 7 Auburn and No. 12 Arkansas met up in 2010 in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

In a game where the Razorbacks put up 566 yards of total offense to the Tigers’ 470, Cam Newton helped lead Auburn to a 65-43 win to stay undefeated. Newton himself had 140 passing yards and a touchdown while rushing for 188 yards and three scores.

Why Arkansas Will Win

So how is this happening? How did the program that was so miserable for so long pull off an upset over a Mississippi State team that throttled the LSU defense the week before? How did it hang around with Georgia for a half?

Turnovers and more turnvoers.

The offense hasn’t exactly been air-tight with five turnovers, but the two takeaways against Georgia helped and the four against Mississippi State were killers.

The Hogs have to be better than that against an Auburn offense that isn’t screwing up. If Arkansas can be at least a +2, and if QB Feleipe Franks can be as good as he was against the Bulldogs – 71% for 212 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions – this can be close. But …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Auburn Will Win

Arkansas isn’t moving the ball well enough.

The offense sputtered on third downs against Georgia and only converted on 5-of-14 chances against Mississippi State.

Auburn’s defense is having problems on third downs, and the team as a whole is settling in, but the offense isn’t going to make the big mistakes Arkansas needs. Defensively, the front needs to get past a rough day against Georgia, but Arkansas isn’t running for over 200 yards on this group.

At some point Anthony Schwartz is going to break out – the speedy receiver is only averaging 8.8 yards per grab – and Seth Williams is about to bounce back after being held to just 34 yards by Georgia.

The Auburn passing game will work again.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s one of the more fascinating games of the early SEC season. Is Arkansas for real? Can Auburn show that last week was just a bad day against an elite Georgia team?

Tiger QB Bo Nix might not be accurate enough, and he’s not getting enough help from the running game, but the offense will be efficient and the defense will keep finally start to come up with third down stops and get off the field.

BetMGM has Auburn as big favorites over Arkansas

Auburn is a big favorite over Arkansas but could have its hands full with a talented Razorbacks team.

Before the season began, all Auburn fans looked at the Arkansas game as a pushover and possibly a historic rout for the Tigers.

That’s not the case anymore as Gus Malzahn’s side looked less than mediocre in a 27-6 loss to Georgia on Saturday and the Razorbacks went into Starkville and upset everyone’s Week 1 darlings in the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

BetMGM Sportsbook still has Gus Malzahn’s team listed as 16.5-point favorites over the Razorbacks as Auburn hosts Sam Pittman’s side in Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday.

Here are the other odds for this week’s SEC slate of games:

Odds courtesy of BetMGM Sportsbook

Florida (-6.5) at Texas A&M

South Carolina (-12) at Vanderbilt

Tennessee at Georgia (-14)

Alabama (-24) at Ole Miss

Mississippi State at Kentucky (-3)

Missouri at LSU (-20.5)

Early Vegas odds have Auburn a 18-point favorite over Arkansas

Auburn needs to quickly get over the loss to Georgia as the Tigers face a better than expected Arkansas side.

[jwplayer YUMTYx0j-er0jUifI]

The early lines from Vegas are in and the bookies are expecting Auburn to rebound with gusto.

The Tigers started Sunday as a 18-point favorite over the visiting Arkansas Razorbacks. Gus Malzahn’s team is coming off a 27-6 loss to Georgia in Athens on Saturday night while Arkansas pulled off one of the many upsets of the day by grounding Mike Leach’s Air Raid attack in a 21-14 victory over Mississippi State, breaking a 20-game SEC losing streak.

Auburn hosts Arkansas at 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Here are some other odds for the upcoming week in SEC football:

Mississippi State at Kentucky (-3)

Tennessee at Georgia (-14)

Alabama (-23) at Ole Miss

Missouri at LSU (-18)

Florida (-7) at Texas A&M

South Carolina (-12) at Vanderbilt
