Two Colorado transfers land at Power Five schools

Colorado transfers Aubrey Smith and Jake Wiley are both staying in the Power Five

While the bulk of Colorado’s outgoing transfers have struggled to receive big-time college offers, a pair of former Buffs are remaining in the Power Five. Jake Wiley committed to UCLA and Aubrey Smith landed at Houston, which is set for its inaugural Big 12 season.

Smith had a standout spring, but the freshman linebacker entered the portal on April 24 just days after earning his No. 32 jersey number.

Wiley, a sophomore offensive lineman, entered the portal on April 26 and immediately received Power Five offers from other schools such as Purdue, Duke, Washington State, Cal and Cincinnati. Colorado will see Wiley’s Bruins on Oct. 28.

Wiley and Smith both committed on Tuesday.

Former Buffs tight end Zach Courtney announced on Monday that he’s headed to Coastal Carolina.

Returning Colorado linebacker Aubrey Smith earns his No. 32 back

With Aubrey Smith being the fourth player at the position to earn a number, Colorado’s linebacker room has been impressive this spring

I’ve been pleasantly surprised to see how many Buffs from last season’s 1-11 team have earned their jersey number this spring.

On Wednesday, Colorado linebacker Aubrey Smith took back his No. 32, joining tight end Louis Passarello, safety Trevor Woods and linebackers Marvin Ham II and Isaac Hurtado as returning players who’ve impressed the new coaching staff.

Smith, a former three-star class of 2022 recruit out of Georgia, appeared in nine games during his true freshman season and recorded 10 total tackles, one sack and fourth quarter forced fumble against Cal.

Entering this spring, many saw the linebacker position as an area of concern, but with four players already having earned their uniform numbers, including Clemson transfer LaVonta Bentley, the Buffs’ LBs have been a definite bright spot this spring.

Colorado football state of the position: Outside Linebackers

Colorado’s outside linebackers will play a big role in 2022

CU is being tricky this year with its position groupings. The Buffs have a group of defensive ends we previewed last week listed as outside linebackers, while all of the linebackers are listed as inside linebackers. So, we could see some players moving around a bit.

Regardless, we will be highlighting the listed inside linebackers who we believe will be playing more on the outside, got it? As we highlighted earlier this month, the 4-3 alignment utilizes two outside linebackers, a SAM (a strong side LB that moves with the tight end) and a WILL (a weak side LB that positions himself away from the TE).

Let’s dig in with our projected depth chart coming first followed by some analysis:

Colorado commits Victor Venn and Aubrey Smith navigating state title run, visited by Dorrell and assistant coaches

These Colorado Buffaloes commits are doing work in their state championship run.

The Colorado Buffaloes football season concluded and now is the time to switch over to the recruiting side of things.

The Buffs have been busy getting recruits and also busy losing players to the transfer portal, with La’Vontae Shenault, Keith Miller III and Ashaad Clayton among those deciding to leave Boulder and head elsewhere.

Nonetheless, the Buffs still have a lot of talent coming in, including three-star running back Victor Venn from Buford High School in Georgia.

The Buffs’ commit exploded for 195 yards on the ground in a 27-0 victory over Lee County in the 6A Georgia quarterfinals, and he followed that up with 103 yards on 17 carries and a score in the semifinals.

Venn, who committed in March, has a lot of talent and the Buffs should be excited about bringing him on board.

But Venn isn’t the only future Buff on Buford’s roster. Three-star linebacker Aubrey Smith more recently committed to CU on Oct. 22. Smith also got a visit from Dorrell, along with inside linebackers coach Mark Smith. In the state semifinal game, he came up with a big tackle for a loss.

Buford’s pair of Colorado commits will face Langston Hughes on Friday in the state championship game.
