Lakers at Hawks: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Lakers 111, Hawks 109

Money line (ML)

With both LeBron and Davis questionable, it’s hard to make a money line bet here. If they play, I like the Lakers to win outright but if they’re sidelined, I’d pass on wagering on the money line.

The Hawks are set to have Young in the lineup and he’s been a stud of late, averaging 37.6 points per game across his last five. The Lakers’ money line isn’t all that appetizing at -225, either, so I’d PASS on the money line and look at the spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Lakers come in favored by 5.5 points over Atlanta. Both teams are 4-2 over their last six games and won their last times out; the Lakers squeaked by the Boston Celtics, while the Hawks beat the Washington Wizards by 16.

While the spread isn’t necessarily large, I like the HAWKS +5.5 (-110) to cover and possibly even win outright, especially if the Lakers are without James and/or Davis. Get the 5.5 points now before their official statuses are released.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Under has been hot for both of these teams. The Lakers’ last three games each played to the Under, as well as five of their last six. The total has gone Under in seven of the Hawks’ last 10 games, too.

I like the Under in this matchup, particularly if James and Davis are out. Even if they play, the Lakers offense hasn’t exactly been humming of late, averaging 98 points per game in their last three. Take the UNDER 218.5 (-110).

Atlanta Hawks at Washington Wizards odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Atlanta Hawks at Washington Wizards NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Atlanta Hawks (9-9) visit the Washington Wizards (3-11) Friday for a 7 p.m. ET game at Capital One Arena. Below, we analyze the Hawks-Wizards NBA odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Atlanta dropped its previous game against the Brooklyn Nets in a 132-128 shootout Tuesday but covered the spread as a 6-point home underdog. The Hawks are 4-2 straight up and 5-1 against the spread in their last six games.

Following a 13-day layoff due to COVID-19 issues, the Wizards have lost three straight road games by an average score of 117.3-98.3. They’re shooting 40.7% from the field and 30.2% from three over that span.

The Wizards won and covered in two of three meetings with the Hawks last season. The Hawks covered as single-point favorites in a 152-133 win in Jan. 2020.

Hawks at Wizards: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 1:50 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Hawks -160 (bet $160 to win $100) | Wizards +135 (bet $100 to win $135)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Hawks -3.5 (-110) | Wizards +3.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 234.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Hawks at Wizards: Key injuries

Hawks

  • SF Cam Reddish (quadriceps) probable
  • C Clint Capela (hand) probable
  • PG Rajon Rondo (ankle) questionable
  • SG Bogdan Bogdanovic (knee) out

Wizards

  • SF Deni Avdija (health and safety protocols) out
  • SF Troy Brown Jr. (health and safety protocols) out
  • PG Ish Smith (health and safety protocols) out

Hawks at Wizards: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Wizards 121, Hawks 115

Money line (ML)

Washington has several contributors returning from COVID-19-related absences and PG Russell Westbrook is active despite battling a quadriceps injury. There could be a ramp-up period for these returning players but the Wizards offense should be able to match up well against the Hawks. Atlanta is giving up the most points in the paint over its last six games. You know SG Bradley Beal and Westbrook want to attack the rim.

Speaking of which, Beal has recorded at least 24 points in each of his past seven games against the Hawks. While Hawks All-Star PG Trae Young has struggled in his six career games vs. the Wizards with only 18.7 points per game on 37.1% shooting. He has a 102 offensive rating against the Wizards vs. a 111 career offensive rating.

Finally, this is a Pros vs. Joes situation as more cash is on the Wizards to win outright while more bets have been placed on the Hawks, according to pregame.com. Since the money column is typically the sharp side of the market, let’s follow the money and BET WIZARDS (+135) for a quarter-unit.

Against the spread (ATS)

Simply put, if you’re going to bet a 3-11 team to win outright you should almost always take the points, too. Like the money line market, the pros are backing Washington plus points. TAKE WIZARDS +3.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

Atlanta has the highest free-throw rate on the season and this is a weak spot for the Wizards whose defense has the second-worst free-throw per field-goal attempt rate. Washington also excels at getting to the charity stripe and is fifth in free-throw rate.

I’m on the OVER 234.5 (-110) but only for a smaller wager because I prefer sides more than totals.

Brooklyn Nets at Atlanta Hawks odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Brooklyn Nets at Atlanta Hawks NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Atlanta Hawks (9-8) host the Brooklyn Nets (11-8) Wednesday at State Farm Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Nets-Hawks NBA odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

It’s been an interesting couple of weeks for the Nets, who acquired G James Harden in a blockbuster trade while simultaneously dealing with the absence of PG Kyrie Irving. It hasn’t been profitable betting on the three-headed monster in Brooklyn as the Nets are just 2-4 against the spread since Harden joined the team.

Atlanta has beaten up on bad teams but is 4-1 straight up and ATS in its last five games, including a 108-99 win as a 6-point home favorite over the Los Angeles Clippers Tuesday.

The Hawks lost to the other three above-.500 opponents they’ve played in the past two weeks in the Utah Jazz, Portland Trail Blazers and Milwaukee Bucks.

These teams split their earlier meetings this season, but the Hawks covered the spread in both games. Brooklyn won the first meeting in a 145-141 shootout, then Atlanta hammered the Nets 114-96.

Nets at Hawks: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 2:25 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Nets -280 (bet $280 to win $100) | Hawks +220 (bet $100 to win $220)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Nets -6.5 (-110) | Hawks +6.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 238.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Nets at Hawks: Key injuries

Nets

  • SG Spencer Dinwiddie (knee) out

Hawks

  • SG Cam Reddish (Achilles) questionable
  • SG Bogdan Bogdanovic (knee) out
  • Clint Capela (hand) questionable
  • SF Danilo Gallinari (ankle) probable

Nets at Hawks: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Nets 117, Hawks 106

Money line (ML)

PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

Since the beginning of last season, Atlanta has been the worst bet when playing on no rest: The Hawks are an NBA-worst 3-11 ATS with a minus-10.6 ATS margin in the second half of back-to-backs.

This is major because while Atlanta has a relatively clean injury report at the moment, they’ve battled injuries all season with key contributors at less than full health.

Also, Brooklyn has to be motivated by getting crushed in its last game against Atlanta. Now that The Beard has joined forces with Irving and SF Kevin Durant, this game will go differently.

GIMME NETS -6.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

Brooklyn’s 98-85 victory over the Miami Heat in its last game broke a 12-game Over streak. The Nets have the second-highest Over percentage in the league whereas the Hawks have the highest Under percentage.

Atlanta is going to be pumped for this rubber match so I’m disregarding any of that “tired legs from playing the night prior” talk. The Hawks will at least try to D up the Nets.

Despite liking the Nets side, I lean UNDER 238.5 (-110) for a half-unit because this is too high of a projected total for how reliant Brooklyn is on three guys.

Los Angeles Clippers at Atlanta Hawks odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Los Angeles Clippers at Atlanta Hawks NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Los Angeles Clippers (13-4) visit the Big Peach Tuesday without their dynamic duo for a 7:30 p.m. ET game with the Atlanta Hawks (8-8) at State Farm Arena. Below, we analyze the Clippers-Hawks NBA odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

This will be Los Angeles’ first game without Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Pat Beverley who are all inactive for a couple of reasons. Leonard and George are out in accordance with the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols and Beverley is dealing with a sore right knee.

The Clippers will hope to have the next man up mentality for the bench to keep the team’s winning ways up. Los Angeles has won seven straight games and covered the spread in four of its past five games entering Tuesday.

Atlanta had its three-game win streak snapped (3-0 against the spread) at the Milwaukee Bucks Sunday. The Hawks were without two starters in PG Trae Young and C Clint Capela and were boat raced 129-115. They failed to cover as 12-point road underdogs.

Clippers at Hawks: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 3 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Clippers +155 (bet $100 to win $155) | Hawks -190 (bet $190 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Clippers +4.5 (-110) | Hawks -4.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 221.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Clippers at Hawks: Key Injuries

Clippers

  • SF Kawhi Leonard (health and safety protocols) out

Clippers at Hawks: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hawks 114, Clippers 112

Money line (ML)

PASS with a lean on Clippers (+155) since I’m betting Los Angeles to cover the spread but I don’t like the payout enough to sprinkle on the underdog’s money line.

Wait until closer to tip-off because if Young is active, Clippers’ backers should get a juicier payout.

Against the spread (ATS)

BetMGM and every sportsbook know the Clippers are missing their best players yet they still opened this game with the Hawks favored by just 2.5 points. More than 90% of the market is currently betting Atlanta according to Pregame.com, which has steamed the line up to Hawks -4.5 (-110).

Don’t sleep on Los Angeles’ depth and the veteran presence without Kawhi and PG. No one is arguing who has more talent but in the batten down the hatches scenario the Clippers are currently in, vets like SG Lou Williams, PF Marcus Morris and C Serge Ibaka can hold down the fort.

It’s more of a lean than a like but I’m on CLIPPERS +4.5 (-110) for a half-unit because the market is just too lopsided right now based on information everyone can access.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Clippers have been torching teams with their offensive execution but rank 27th in pace of play. I see the Hawks pushing the tempo and trying to get the Clippers off their game and Los Angeles still has three of its top four 3-point shooters available.

As in the above sections, it might be better to wait closer to tip-off because the market is hammering the Under. The Clippers-Hawks projected total opened at 224.5 and everyone is making the obvious bet. Let’s fade them and TAKE OVER 221.5 (-115) for 1 unit.

Atlanta Hawks at Minnesota Timberwolves odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Atlanta Hawks at Minnesota Timberwolves NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Atlanta Hawks (7-7) drop by the Target Center Friday for an 8 p.m. ET tip-off against the Minnesota Timberwolves (3-10). Below, we analyze the Hawks-Timberwolves NBA odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The Hawks clawed back from a 17-point deficit to beat the Detroit Pistons 123-115 in overtime and cover as 4.5-point favorites at home. Atlanta got amazing performances out of its frontcourt—PF John Collins put up 31 points and 11 rebounds and C Clint Capela dominated the interior with 27 points and 26 rebounds—while All-Star PG Trae Young dropped 38 points with 11 assists. Over their past five games, the Hawks are 3-2 straight-up and against the spread, including a 108-97 win over the Timberwolves in Atlanta  Jan. 18.

Minnesota has been terrible all season, losing three straight and 10 of its last 11 games. The Timberwolves have the second-lowest net rating in the NBA and are in the bottom-10th in effective field goal percentage, defensive rebounding percentage and assist to turnover ratio.

Hawks at Timberwolves: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 12:50 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Hawks -225 (bet $225 to win $100) | Timberwolves +185 (bet $100 to win $185)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Hawks -6.5 (-105) | Timberwolves +6.5 (-115)
  • Over/Under: 225.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Hawks at Timberwolves: Key Injuries

  • SF Danilo Gallinari (ankle) doubtful
  • SG Bogdan Bogdanovic (knee) out

Hawks at Timberwolves: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hawks 117, Timberwolves 113

Money line (ML)

PASS with a slight lean to the Timberwolves (+185) since I like Minnesota to cover. Atlanta has a lot more talent and if they can shoot well—keep in mind the Timberwolves are one of the worst defensive teams in the league—this game could get out of hand.

Against the spread (ATS)

While on one hand, you could argue that the first Hawks-Timberwolves meeting was way more lopsided than the final score indicates, the biggest factor in the rematch is the probable absence of SF De’Andre Hunter.

There’s a lot of intriguing pieces on the Hawks, and if they can work out the kinks in their offense, Atlanta should be a lock for at least the postseason play-in tournament for the Eastern Conference.

However, I am here to tell you that Hunter is Atlanta’s best player with the most upside. The NBA is run by wings, and his ability to shoot from deep, finish around the rim and defend positions 1-4 make Hunter special.

Hunter scored a team-high 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting in the first Hawks-Timberwolves game and was key in making Minnesota’s SG Malik Beasley and SF Josh Okogie essentially non-factors.

BetMGM also saw the box score from this game and brought the line down a half-point from that meeting not because the Timberwolves are at home, but because Hunter will probably not be available.

GIMME TIMBERWOLVES +6.5 (-115) for a half-unit (pending final injury report).

Over/Under (O/U)

TAKE OVER 225.5 (-115) for 1 unit because BetMGM has overreacted too greatly to the first Hawks-Timberwolves result. In their first meeting this season, the Hawks-Timberwolves’ final score fell short of the 228.5-point projection by 23.5 points.

Bookmakers’ reacted by opening this total at 222 points, and the market has already steamed it up 3.5 points. Also, the previous five Hawks-Timberwolves meetings before the last went Over the total.

Finally, part of me thinks Atlanta’s ninth-best defensive rating is a bit of a mirage, and Hunter is the Hawks’ best on-the-ball defender. The OVER 225.5 (-115) is my favorite play here.

Detroit Pistons at Atlanta Hawks odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Detroit Pistons at Atlanta Hawks NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Detroit Pistons (3-10) are in the Big Peach Wednesday to play the Atlanta Hawks (6-7) at State Farm Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Pistons-Hawks NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Detroit has done an awesome job cashing tickets for point-spread but has not done such a great job winning any of these games. Detroit is 6-3-1 against the spread in its last 10 games. The push was in its previous outing—a 113-107 loss to the Miami Heat as a 6-point road underdog.

The Pistons’ big offseason acquisition, SF Jerami Grant, is showing to be a worthwhile investment. He is leading the Pistons in scoring (24.9 points per game) on .467/.389/.863 shooting and is second on the team with 6.1 rebounds per game.

The Hawks have struggled to win outright or ATS coming into Wednesday’s game. Atlanta is just 3-7 in its last 10 games (4-6 ATS) but enters off a 108-97 home win as a 7-point favorite against the Minnesota Timberwolves Monday.

What’s surprising so far about the Hawks is how poorly they are shooting from the field and that Atlanta has relied on its defense. The Hawks are third in opponent’s effective field goal percentage and second in rebounds per game.

The Pistons lost their only meeting with the Hawks this season (128-120 in Atlanta) but covered as 10.5-point underdogs as part of a three-game ATS winning streak vs. Atlanta. Last season, Detroit pummeled the Hawks by 25 and 33 points in the final two meetings and won the 2019-20 season series 2-1.

Pistons at Hawks: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 2:30 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Pistons +165 (bet $100 to win $165) | Hawks -200 (bet $200 to win $100)

Pistons at Hawks: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Pistons 114, Hawks 107

Money line (ML)

Despite Atlanta’s startling year over year improvement in defense, the Hawks didn’t defend the Pistons well in their first meeting this season and Detroit has scored at least 120 points in its last three games vs. Atlanta.

Detroit put up 120 earlier this season even without PG Derrick Rose (team leader in assists per game and second in points per game) and PF Blake Griffin.

Since Detroit is healthier this time, the Hawks are less healthy and I plan on betting Detroit to cover, I lean PISTONS (+165) for a quarter-unit.

Against the spread (ATS)

Atlanta’s end-of-game performances make the Hawks a tough team to back. The Hawks have the third-lowest net clutch rating and play at the second-fastest pace in the clutch. Atlanta loses its composure in the final minutes.

Detroit has its own issues with clutch rating and offensive efficiency but, to the Pistons’ credit, they rank second in defensive turnover percentage so they should capitalize on Atlanta’s miscues.

I’m on PISTONS +4.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

LEAN Under 219.5 (-110) but officially I’ll PASS ON THE TOTAL. The market is hammering the Under mostly because of Atlanta’s 2-11 O/U record but I’ve already made my case as to why Detroit’s offense could have some success in this one, which correlates with my Pistons’ money line and spread bets.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Atlanta Hawks odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Monday’s Minnesota Timberwolves at Atlanta Hawks NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Atlanta Hawks (5-7) host the Minnesota Timberwolves (3-8) Monday at State Farm Arena. The Martin Luther King Day tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Timberwolves-Hawks NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Minnesota has lost four of its past five (3-2 against the spread), including a 118-107 home loss to the Memphis Grizzlies Wednesday. The Timberwolves were outscored 38-17 in the fourth quarter to blow the game and their biggest issue surfaced again—interior defense. Minnesota was outscored in the paint 80-44 by Memphis and is allowing the most points in the paint in the league.

The Hawks also dropped their last game—a 112-106 loss at the Portland Trail Blazers Saturday—and have lost six of their last seven (straight-up and ATS). It was another poor shooting night for a Hawks team that is second-to-last in field-goal percentage and 23rd in effective field-goal percentage. Atlanta was 6-for-30 from behind the arc against Portland and PG Trae Young was 30.4% from the field and made no 3’s in the second half.

These teams split last season’s series (straight-up and ATS) with the road team each winning a game. The Hawks are 3-1 straight-up and ATS vs. the Timberwolves since drafting Young in 2018.

Timberwolves at Hawks: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Timberwolves 116, Hawks 111

Money line (ML)

Atlanta is one of the worst shooting teams in the league, and the biggest weakness of the Timberwolves—interior defense—the Hawks probably won’t be able to exploit. The Hawks are middle of the pack in drives per game and last in field-goal percentage on drives.

Also, Minnesota’s backcourt—PG D’Angelo Russell and SG Malik Beasley—are both averaging 20-plus points per game and I give the Timberwolves the edge on the perimeter. It’s more of lean because I like Minnesota plus points, but let’s put a tiny wager on TIMBERWOLVES (+260).

Against the spread (ATS)

To be honest, it’s hard to make a pro-Timberwolves case, but I’m looking to fade the Hawks as much as possible. I get Atlanta has a plus net rating and Minnesota has the worst net rating, but the Timberwolves have played the third-toughest schedule so far and the Hawks just 15th.

Furthermore, the Hawks have been a bad bet at home this season and are just 1-4 ATS as a home favorite. Atlanta isn’t a tough environment pre-COVID and the Timberwolves beat the Hawks on their home floor last season.

GIMME TIMBERWOLVES +7.5 (-110) for 1.5 units.

Over/Under (O/U)

lean UNDER 229.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit because Atlanta has a 2-10 O/U record and its opponents have the third-lowest effective field-goal percentage. However, since both teams are so inconsistent, the Over has cashed in five straight Timberwolves-Hawks games and I have a stronger grasp of the sides, I wouldn’t wager much on the total.

Hawks at Suns: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Suns 115, Hawks 111

Money line (ML)

The Suns have actually lost two straight games in which they have been favored, but the Hawks have lost four of five overall. Phoenix is 3-1 at home this season, and Atlanta is missing several key players against a nearly healthy Suns squad. Take the SUNS -200.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Suns have been consistent in their performance against the spread. It mirrors their regular record. If they win the game, they cover. If they lose, they do not. This will be the first time in six games that the Hawks are not favored. They have covered the spread this year each time they have been the underdog. The Suns have lost and failed to cover the last two games in which they have been favored. Take the HAWKS +5.5 (-115)

Over/Under (O/U)

This total dropped quite a bit, but it’s still pretty risky. The Suns’ games have gone Over in four of five and the fifth game was one point short of a push. Atlanta’s games have gone Under in each of their last six games and in all but two this season. Neither they nor their opponents have scored more than 114 points in that six-game stretch. Take UNDER 228.5 POINTS (-105).

Atlanta Hawks at Charlotte Hornets odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Atlanta Hawks at Charlotte Hornets NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Atlanta Hawks (4-4) pay a visit to the Charlotte Hornets (4-5) at Spectrum Center Saturday for a 7 p.m. ET tip-off. Below, we analyze the Hawks-Hornets NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The two teams played Wednesday with the Hornets earning a 102-94 win in Atlanta. It was the third-straight loss for the Hawks.

The Hornets will play the second half of a back-to-back and their fourth game this week. They’re 2-1 in the stretch following a 118-110 road win over the New Orleans Pelicans Friday.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Hawks -5.5 (-105) | Hornets +5.5 (-115)
  • Over/Under: 228.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Hawks at Hornets: Key Injuries

Hawks

  • PG Kris Dunn (ankle) out
  • C Bruno Fernando (hip) probable
  • SF Danilo Gallinari (ankle) out
  • PG Rajon Rondo (knee) out
  • Onyeka Okongwu (foot) out

Hawks at Hornets: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hawks 126, Hornets 108

Money line (ML)

The HAWKS (-200) can be backed for the outright win, albeit at a chalkier price. Both teams shot just 38% from the field in Wednesday’s meeting, but Atlanta was undone by a disastrous 7-for-40 performance from 3-point range. The Hawks are shooting 36.2% from three for the season to rank 15th in the NBA.

The Hornets used a 36-point fourth quarter to cap a comeback victory over the Pelicans Friday. They trailed 38-22 after the opening 12 minutes but turned it on late and got 27 points off turnovers to the Pelicans’ 14.

Hawks PG Trae Young, an early MVP contender with 25.9 points per game and 8.4 assists per game, will have a key edge against the tired Hornets backcourt.

Against the spread (ATS)

The Hawks are the No. 1 rebounding team in the NBA with 49.0 rebounds per game while the Hornets are 14th at 44.9 RPG. Factor in the tired legs and a weaker defensive effort, and Hawks C Clint Capela should add to his 13.2 RPG average for the season.

Take the rested HAWKS -5.5 (-105) to get some revenge against a tired opponent. Atlanta was a 6-point favorite Wednesday, so we’re getting better value as it looks to end a three-game losing skid.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 228.5 (-110). These two fell way below a projected line of 232.5 Wednesday, but that was with both teams shooting well below their season averages from 2- and 3-point range. A little positive regression from either side will get to the Over on a line 5 points lower than it was three days ago.
