Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Atlanta Braves (43-33) take on the St. Louis Cardinals (40-37) Wednesday in the finale of a 3-game set at Busch Stadium at 7:15 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Braves vs. Cardinals odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Cards lead 1-0; Tuesday’s game was rained out and will be made up as part of a doubleheader at 1:45 p.m. ET Wednesday (had not yet been decided at press time)

After storms foiled Tuesday night’s game, the Braves had an extra 24 hours of bitterness following the 4-3 loss Monday night. Atlanta made things interesting in the 9th when Cards closer Ryan Helsley allowed 2 ER on 2 H and 2 BB before shutting the door. The Braves are 7-3 over their last 10 games.

The Cards caught a break when the Braves pushed back LHP Chris Sale to Thursday. He will not pitch in this game as originally scheduled. The Cards also switched things up, bumping RHP Andre Pallante from the afternoon game. They’ll go with a bullpen game, starting LHP Matthew Liberatore initially. Entering Wednesday, INF/OF Brendan Donovan has hit safely in 8 straight games and has an RBI in 7 straight games. The Cards are 7-3 over their last 10 games.

Braves at Cardinals projected starters

RHP Bryce Elder vs. LHP Matthew Liberatore

Elder (1-2, 6.46 ERA) makes his 6th start. He has a 1.94 WHIP, 4.2 BB/9 and 7.2 K/9 through 23 2/3 innings.

  • Last start: Loss, 3 IP, 6 ER, 9 H, 3 BB, 3 K in 9-1 home defeat May 19 vs. San Diego Padres
  • 1 career start vs. St. Louis: Win, 6 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 BB, 6 K in 5-2 road victory April 5, 2023

Liberatore (1-2, 4.46 ERA) makes his 5th start and 27th appearance. He has a 1.25 WHIP, 3.5 BB/9 and 6.6 K/9 through 38 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 3 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K in 4-3 loss June 19 at Miami Marlins
  • Starter/reliever splits: As a starter – 0-1, 7.24 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 6.6 K/9 in 13 2/3 IP vs. as a reliever – 1-1, 2.92 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 6.6 K/9 in 24 2/3 IP
  • 2 appearances (1 start) vs. Braves: 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 8.4 K/9 in 5 1/3 IP

  • Run line (RL)/Against the spread (ATS): Braves -1.5 (+145) | Cardinals +1.5 (-175)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Braves at Cardinals picks and predictions

Prediction

Braves 7, Cardinals 3

Moneyline

The Cards have a solid bullpen, but it’s more about the last 3 guys, as the middle relief has been pretty meh. The Braves scored 3 runs in 3 straight games entering today, and their bats are due for a breakout.

I love the BRAVES -115 at this price.

Run line/Against the spread

Liberatore is great against lefties with a .135/.167/.212 slash line. However, righties blister him to a .310/.394/.548 slash line this season. You know who is right-handed? Braves 3B Austin Riley is, and he homered Monday night. Props were not available at press time, but when they are, take AUSTIN RILEY OVER 1.5 H+R+RBI.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

The wind is slated to be blowing in from left-center at 9 mph, but it’s also expected to be super humid after the rain passed through. Those 2 factors should counteract each other, and Liberatore gave up 2 homers to his first 2 batters in his last start. He’s just not a good starter at this level. So I’m taking the OVER 8.5 (-115) as the Braves bats awaken.

Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Atlanta Braves (43-33) take on the St. Louis Cardinals (40-37) Tuesday in the 2nd game of a 3-game set at Busch Stadium at 7:45 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Braves vs. Cardinals odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Cards lead 1-0

The Braves fell 4-3 in the opener Monday night. OF Jarred Kelenic and 2B Ozzie Albies went 0-for-8 atop of the lineup, but Albies just missed a home run that died at the warning track. Atlanta made things interesting in the 9th when Cards closer Ryan Helsley allowed 2 ER on 2 H and 2 BB before shutting the door.

We cashed the +100 Cardinals moneyline Monday night. The Cards beat a really good team with 1B Paul Goldschmidt and 3B Nolan Arenado out of the lineup. OF Alec Burleson and INF/OF Brendan Donovan are carrying the team right now. They combined to go 5-for-7 with 2 RBIs Monday. C Willson Contreras also drove in a run in his first action in nearly 2 months.

Braves at Cardinals projected starters

RHP Reynaldo Lopez vs. RHP Kyle Gibson

Lopez (5-2, 1.57 ERA) makes his 14th start. He has a 1.08 WHIP, 2.8 BB/9 and 9.2 K/9 through 74 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: Win, 5 IP, 0 ER, 7 H, 1 BB, 6 K in 7-0 home victory Wednesday against Detroit Tigers
  • 1 career relief appearance vs. St. Louis: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K
  • Home/road splits: 6 road starts: 2-2, 2.14 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 9.9 K/9 vs. 7 home starts: 3-0, 1.11 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 8.6 K/9

Gibson (5-2, 3.44 ERA) makes his 15th start. He has a 1.20 WHIP, 3.3 BB/9 and 7.9 K/9 through 83 2/3 innings.

  • Last start: Win, 7 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 6 K June 14 in 3-0 victory at Chicago Cubs; missed his last start due to back tightness
  • Last 5 starts vs. Braves: 2-1, 4.91 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 35 K in 29 1/3 IP

Who’s going yard? Here’s a breakdown of today’s best home run props with our top picks. Include the BetMGM bonus code SBWIRE to score a $1,500 first-bet offer.

Braves at Cardinals picks and predictions

Prediction

Braves 5, Cardinals 3

Moneyline

I look for the Braves to rebound here. They had a lot of hard contact right at defenders or that just missed leaving the park Monday. Gibson had a great outing in his last start but missed time to the bereavement list and the back issue. I look for his control to evade him.

You can take the BRAVES -140 here, or you can make it interesting. Lopez hasn’t allowed an ER in his last 2 starts and has allowed more than 2 ER in just 1 of his 13 starts.

Take BRAVES ML + REYNALDO LOPEZ UNDER 2.5 EARNED RUNS (+100).

Run line/Against the spread

I’m pegging this to be a multi-run win for Atlanta, but I personally want more than +125 to incur the risk of it on the road. They’re just 19-20 ATS on the road this year.

Instead, I’m taking BRENDAN DONOVAN OVER 1.5 H+R+RBI (+110). Donovan has an 8-game hitting streak, and he has an RBI in 7 straight. He hit 5th in the order Monday and is clearly on another level right now.

BetMGM Sportsbook is offering an any sport 33% odds boost token that would make that prop bet +146.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

I don’t have as good of a feel on this one as I do the aforementioned wagers. It was 98 degrees and humid as all get out at the ballpark Monday, and the sides only mustered 7 runs with a couple of iffy starters. It’s slated to be 93 degrees with a 7-mph wind blowing out toward left-center. It could go either way, but after Monday’s showing, LEAN UNDER 8.5 (-115).

Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Atlanta Braves (43-32) take on the St. Louis Cardinals (39-37) Monday in the opener of a 3-game set at Busch Stadium at 7:45 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Braves vs. Cardinals odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting; Braves won 4-2 last year

The Braves took 2 of 3 from the New York Yankees over the weekend with a 3-1 win Sunday. They’ve won 5 of 6 and 8 of 10 as they look to hit their stride despite the major injuries they’ve suffered. Braves 3B Austin Riley‘s bat is coming to life with a .326 BA, 4 HR and 9 RBIs over the last 15 days.

The Cards completed a 3-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants Sunday with a 5-3 victory. RHP Sonny Gray took a perfect game into the 7th inning before the Giants got on the board. OFs Brendan Donovan (.362 BA, 4 HR, 11 RBIs) and Alec Burleson (.333 BA, 3 HR, 8 RBIs) have powered the offense over the last 15 days.

Cardinals C Willson Contreras (forearm) will be activated from the IL Monday vs Atlanta, if he passes a medical evaluation.

Braves at Cardinals projected starters

RHP Spencer Schwellenbach vs. RHP Lance Lynn

Schwellenbach (1-2, 4.99 ERA) makes his 5th start. He has a 1.20 WHIP, 2.9 BB/9 and 7.9 K/9 through 21 2/3 innings.

  • Last start: Win, 6 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 7 K in 2-1 home victory Tuesday against Detroit Tigers
  • Has never faced Cardinals before
  • Home/road splits: 2 road starts: 0-1, 6.75 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 5.9 K/9 vs. 2 home starts: 1-1, 3.27 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 9.8 K/9

Lynn (2-3, 4.08 ERA) makes his 16th start. He has a 1.43 WHIP, 3.6 BB/9 and 8.8 K/9 through 75 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 5 1/3 IP, 5 ER, 10 H, 0 BB, 5 K in 9-8 loss in 10 innings Tuesday at Miami Marlins
  • Last 5 starts vs. Braves: 3-2, 4.55 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 18 K in 27 2/3 IP

Braves at Cardinals picks and predictions

Prediction

Cardinals 6, Braves 5

Moneyline

The Cards are averaging 6.3 R/game over their last 6 games, and they’re going to need all of that to outlast the Braves. I think this is the only game in the series the Cards have a legitimate shot at winning with RHP Reynaldo Lopez and LHP Chris Sale starting the next 2.

Lynn isn’t going deep, and he has seen at least 4 runs on the board, earned or unearned, in 6 of his last 7 starts. The CARDINALS +100 find a way to mash just enough.

Run line/Against the spread

Take your pick here, but I like LANCE LYNN UNDER 16.5 OUTS (-110) and LANCE LYNN UNDER 5.5 STRIKEOUTS (-155).

Lynn has not recorded 17 outs in 4 straight starts and hasn’t done it in 2 straight vs. Atlanta. He also has 6+ K’s once in his last 7 GS.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

It’s slated to be 93 degrees with an 8-mph wind blowing left to right. The Braves are 5-4-1 O/U in their last 10, and the Cards are 5-5. The Over has cashed in 7 of the last 10 meetings against one another.

With the heat, the pitching matchup and the Cards’ offense pulling its weight, we’re going OVER 8.5 (-115).

Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Atlanta Braves (4-1) and St. Louis Cardinals (2-3) meet Wednesday to wrap up a 3-game series. First pitch from Busch Stadium is set for 1:15 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Braves vs. Cardinals odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Braves lead 2-0. Atlanta won the 2022 season series 4-3.

The Braves won 4-1 Tuesday as +122 underdogs a night after prevailing 8-4 as -113 favorites in Monday’s opener. 3B Austin Riley hit a 2-run HR in the 1st, RF Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a solo shot in the 2nd and C Seth Murphy added an RBI single in the 3rd as Atlanta jumped out to a 4-0 lead Tuesday. SP Dylan Dodd (W, 5 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 3 K) and 5 Atlanta relievers scattered 10 hits in allowing St. Louis just 1 run.

So far, St. Louis pitching has struggled. The Cardinals pitching staff owns a 5.40 ERA (45 IP, 27 ER) through the first 5 games. They’ve allowed 9 runs twice and have yielded 4 or more runs in all but 1 game — a 4-1 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday. Offensively, 3B Brendan Donovan (.300, 5 HR, 5 RBI) and DH Nolan Gorman (.500, 2 HR, 6 RBI) have supplied a little pop.

Braves at Cardinals projected starters

RHP Bryce Elder vs. RHP Miles Mikolas

Elder will make his 1st start of 2023. He went 2-4 with a 3.17 ERA in his rookie season last year with a 1.24 WHIP, 7.8 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 through 54 IP.

  • Posted a 1-3 record with a 3.66 ERA (32 IP, 13 ER) and 1.25 WHIP across in 5 starts with 1 relief appearance in away games last year
  • Went 1-3 with a 4.74 ERA (19 IP, 10 ER) in his 4 March/April starts a year ago
  • Career vs. Cardinals: Wednesday will be his 1st outing vs. St. Louis

Mikolas (0-0, 13.50) makes his 2nd start of 2023. He was roughed up for 5 ER on 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings in his 1st outing, a no-decision that the Cards lost 10-9 to the visiting Toronto Blue Jays Opening Day. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out 6.

  • Last season at home: 6-3, 2.38 ERA (94 2/3 IP, 25 ER), 69 K across 14 starts
  • Career vs. Braves: 1-3, 3.04 ERA (26 2/3 IP, 9 ER), 1.09 WHIP, 6.8 K/9.
  • Last season vs. Braves (1 start): L, 6 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 2 HR, 1 BB, 4 K in 3-0 road loss July 6

Braves at Cardinals picks and predictions

Prediction

Braves 6, Cardinals 4

Moneyline

LEAN BRAVES (+105).

The Braves are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings with the Cardinals. In the last 16 head-to-head matchups, Atlanta is 12-4. including a 7-game win streak from June 20, 2021 – July 6, 2022.

While I don’t put much weight into these trends, I feel the need to point out that Atlanta is 1-4 in its last 5 Wednesday games.

Run line/Against the spread

BET BRAVES +1.5 (-190).

Recent history says the Braves should win, and by a decent margin, but the 2022 season series was only a 4-3 advantage for the Braves. It’s hard for me to see a team as good as St. Louis get swept in this series. However, only 2 of the last 10 Atlanta-St. Louis matchups came within 1 run and St. Louis won both. If this is game comes down to 1 run, expect St. Louis to win.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

LEAN OVER 9 (-115).

The Over is 6-1 in the last 7 head-to-head meetings in St. Louis and 4-1 in the last 5 meetings overall. Despite the recent Over streak, the O/U has been extremely balanced in recent games between these teams, going 5-5 in the last 10 games.

Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Atlanta Braves (3-1) will square off against the St. Louis Cardinals (2-2) in the 2nd game of a 3-game series on Tuesday at Busch Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Braves vs. Cardinals odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Braves lead 1-0.

The Braves have won 3 of their first 4 games to begin the season. Atlanta has scored 7-plus runs in each of its 3 wins and has outscored its opponents 23-11.

The Cardinals lost 8-4 to the Braves on Monday with RHP Jake Woodford tallying 3 K, 3 BB, 6 ER, and 3 HR in 4 1/3 IP. St. Louis has scored 4-plus runs in each of its first 4 games of the season.

Braves at Cardinals projected starters

LHP Dylan Dodd vs. LHP Steven Matz

Dodd will make his major league debut on Tuesday. He recorded a 3.36 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 2 BB/9, and 9.7 K/9 in 142 IP in the minors in 2022.

  • Was 12-9 in 26 starts in the minors last season
  • Notched a 2.00 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 2 BB/9, and 10 K/9 in 18 IP during spring training.

Matz notched a 5-3 record in 10 starts in 2022 with a 5.25 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 1.9 BB/9, and 10.1 K/9 in 48 IP.

  • Has allowed 1 HR/9 or more in all 8 of his MLB season

Braves at Cardinals picks and predictions

Prediction

Cardinals 6, Braves 5

Moneyline

With Dodd making his debut in the majors, I’ll lean toward taking the CARDINALS (-140) at home. St. Louis has excelled against southpaws in recent years.

Run line/Against the spread

PASS.

Both Dodd and Matz are tough to trust on Tuesday, so I’m not comfortable taking the spread for either team in this matchup.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

OVER 9 (-120) is a high total, but the pitchers in this matchup could struggle against loaded lineups. The Cardinals led the league with a .202 ISO and a 131 wRC+ against LHP in 2022.

The Braves finished 5th in ISO (.179) and wRC+ (118) against lefties in 2022, so plenty of runs could be scored in Tuesday’s bout.

Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Atlanta Braves (2-1) and St. Louis Cardinals (2-1) open a 3-game series Monday at Busch Stadium in an early season battle of NL pennant contenders. First pitch is at 7:45 p.m. ET. The Cards took 2 of 3 from the Toronto Blue Jays in their opening series as they stormed off with a 9-4 victory Sunday. DH Nolan Gorman hit 2 homers and drove in 4 runs in the finale.

Braves at Cardinals projected starters

RHP Charlie Morton vs. RHP Jake Woodford

Morton makes his first start. He was 9-6 with a 4.34 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 3.3 BB/9 and 10.7 K/9 through 173 IP last season.

  • Allowed 4 ER on 5 H and 3 BB with 4 K in 5 IP in no-decision at St. Louis last season (Aug. 27).
  • Started slowly last year with a 7.00 ERA (14 ER in 18 IP) in 4 April starts.

Woodford makes his 1st start. He was 4-0 with a 2.23 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP, 2.0 BB/9 and 4.5 K/9 through 48 1/3 IP last season.

  • Had a great spring with a 2.04 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and a surprising 18 K’s in 17 2/3 IP.

Braves at Cardinals picks and predictions

Prediction

Braves 6, Cardinals 5

Moneyline

The Braves are the correct side here, but the Cards’ bats will make it interesting. The Cards plated 22 runs in their first 3 games, but the Braves have more talent in the bullpen to offset them. Woodford keeps the game close, but Atlanta delivers late.

Take the BRAVES (-130).

Run line/Against the spread

I’m not a fan of either side here and want to look elsewhere. As previously mentioned, I think the game is tight in the first 5 innings. So I’m going with UNDER 4.5 RUNS FIRST 5 INNINGS (-120) to win a FULL UNIT, and I’ll drop a HALF UNIT on UNDER 3.5 RUNS FIRST 5 INNINGS (+155).

Over/Under

The Braves’ bullpen has been lights-out with a 1.50 ERA, but this Cardinals lineup is loaded with good eyes that grind out at-bats. The Cards’ pen has not been good with a 4.61 ERA. While I like the Under for the first 5, I like the Over for the entire game. Take the ALTERNATE OVER 8.5 (+100) as this could be a shootout late. It also hedges the possibility both teams fire out of the gates early.

Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Atlanta Braves (79-48) clash with the St. Louis Cardinals (72-54) Saturday in the 2nd game of a 3-game set at Busch Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. ET (FOX). Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Braves vs. Cardinals odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Braves lead 4-1

The Braves took advantage of some poor defense and a patchwork St. Louis bullpen to claim an 11-4 victory in Friday’s opener. Atlanta only led 2-1 after the 4th inning but scored 3 in the 6th and 3 apiece in the final 2 innings before St. Louis plated 3 in their last at-bat. Atlanta is red-hot at 8-2 over the last 10 and 15-5 over the last 20.

The Cards will try to answer the bell with LHP Jordan Montgomery, who has been nothing short of phenomenal since coming over from the Yankees at the trade deadline. St. Louis actually led 1-0 and were putting up good at-bats against stud Atlanta RHP Spencer Strider Friday before a throwing error on a surefire double play led to 2 runs. The doors just burst open after that.

We nailed all 3 bets on this game Friday and aim to do the same Saturday.

Braves at Cardinals projected starters

RHP Charlie Morton vs. LHP Jordan Montgomery

Morton (6-5, 3.99 ERA) makes his 25th start of the season. He has a 1.17 WHIP, 3.1 BB/9 and 10.9 K/9 in 135 1/3 IP.

  • 1-0, 2.49 ERA (25 1/3 IP, 7 ER), 0.87 WHIP, 13.5 K/9 in 4 starts this August
  • Struggles on road with 5.08 ERA (62 IP, 35 ER), 1.37 WHIP and 9.6 K/9 vs. 3.07 ERA (73 1/3 IP, 25 ER), 1.01 WHIP and 12.0 K/9 at home

Montgomery (7-3, 3.08 ERA) makes his 26th start. He has a 1.01 WHIP, 1.7 BB/9 and 7.8 K/9 in 140 1/3 IP.

  • Coming off his 1st-career shutout, allowing 1 hit and striking out 7 Cubs – with no walks – in 1-0 victory at Wrigley Field Monday
  • Since joining Cards: 4-0, 0.35 ERA (25 2/3 IP, 1 ER), 0.62 WHIP, 1.1 BB/9 8.4 K/9 in 4 starts

Braves at Cardinals picks and predictions

Prediction

Cardinals 4, Braves 2

Money line

Even after Friday’s poor showing, the Cards are still 14-6 and 21-9 over the last 20 and 30 games, respectively. Expect them to bounce back Saturday with Montgomery on the mound. He has been a stud, gives them length, and closer Ryan Helsley came back from paternity leave Friday. Look for him to be available for 2 innings Saturday.

Back the CARDINALS (+100) at even-money.

Run line/Against the spread

There isn’t much to like about either RL Saturday, and I’m not sold that either offense will take charge in the first 5 innings. I do like CARDINALS +0.5 FIRST 5 INNINGS (-160), which is a bit pricey but gives them a cushion if the game is tied after 5.

I also like COREY DICKERSON OVER 1.5 TOTAL BASES (+135). He’s 8-for-18 (.444) with 2 HR lifetime off of Morton and is coming off a historic 10-for-10 stretch.

Over/Under

The Under is 4-0 in Montgomery’s last 4 starts. There isn’t a lot of data supporting the Under besides that. In fact, this Over would have hit in 5 of the 7 last meetings, dating back to last season. The wind is blowing to the left-field foul pole at 7 mph. Truly, it could go either way. I would lean Under 7.5 (-125), but my official take is PASS.

Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Atlanta Braves (78-48) clash with the St. Louis Cardinals (73-53) Friday in the 1st game of a 3-game set at Busch Stadium. First pitch is set for 8:15 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Braves vs. Cardinals odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Atlanta leads 3-1

This is a story about 2 teams ablaze with their sights set on October. Atlanta is 8-2 in the last 10 games and 15-5 in the last 20 and is close to getting 2B Ozzie Albies back from injury. The Braves are averaging 6.5 runs per game in the last 10, but that number is skewed by a 13 and 14 spot. They have 1 of their horses on the mound Friday.

The Cards are averaging 6.8 runs per game in the last 10, but that, too, is skewed by 13, 16 and 13 spots. St. Louis has had a soft spot in its schedule with the Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs. This will be a real test for them as we creep into September. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt is starting to run away with the MVP trophy, hitting .383 with 9 homers and 27 RBIs this month. He’ll have to do it without sidekick 3B Nolan Arenado, who was placed on the paternity list Friday afternoon.

Braves at Cardinals projected starters

RHP Spencer Strider vs. LHP Jose Quintana

Strider (7-4, 2.95 ERA) makes his 16th start. He has a 1.02 WHIP, 3.3 BB/9 and 13.5 K/9 in 100 2/3 IP.

  • Owned St. Louis with 12 K’s in 6 shutout innings July 7
  • A little less lethal on the road with a 3.48 ERA and 12.9 K.9 vs. 2.54 ERA and 14.0 K/9 at home

Quintana (4-5, 3.45 ERA) makes his 25th start. He has a 1.30 WHIP, 2.9 BB/9 and 7.7 K/9 in 122 2/3 IP.

  • Struggled in Arizona last time out with 2 ER, 7 H, 3 BB and 0 K’s in 2 2/3 IP
  • Is 1-0 with a 3.20 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 7.3 K/9 in 4 starts with Cardinals

Braves at Cardinals picks and predictions

Prediction

Braves 5, Cardinals 3

Money line

Atlanta is a fairly heavy favorite, and a lot of that is because of what Strider did to the Cards in his first start. However, he hasn’t been as dominant over his last 7 starts with a couple of clunkers mixed in. With Arenado out, the Cards’ offense is still pretty solid, but that’s a big piece missing when facing a stud like Strider. I’ll take the BRAVES FIRST 5 INNINGS (-108).

Run line/Against the spread

The Braves are 36-24 on the road, and while the Cards are great at home, the Braves took it to them in Atlanta. The Braves’ 3 wins were by a combined score of 16-4, and the Cards won the finale, 3-2, in 11 innings. LEAN BRAVES -1.5 (+105).

Over/Under

This number is heavily weighted on Strider’s dominance, which hasn’t been there of late with his 3.60 ERA in the last 7 starts. Two of the 4 previous meetings went over 8 runs, and both teams are clicking this time around. Even with Arenado out, I’m still going to LEAN OVER 7.5 (+112).
