Notre Dame basketball beats Tubby Smith for first time

Notre Dame is 2-0 after they beat an all-time college basketball coach for the first time in program history.

It wasn’t the best of starts for Notre Dame basketball on Tuesday night but for a 4:20 stretch the Irish were dominant enough to turn the tide of their second contest of the year.

After trailing Half Point 33-32 at halftime and falling back behind early in the second half, Notre Dame went on a 13-0 stretch from the 18:36 mark to the 14:16 mark take a 47-36 advantage of which they’d never look back from, ultimately winning 70-61.

Graduate-transfer Paul Atkinson, Jr. was as good as advertised as he led all scorers with 19 points.  Atkinson pulled down 11 boards for one of three Notre Dame triple-doubles on the night.  Nate Laszewski (10 points, 16 rebounds) and Dane Goodwin (12 points, 11 rebounds) joined Atkinson on a night Mike Brey and the Fighting Irish moved to 2-0.

It was far from a perfect showing by Notre Dame as they went just 6-31 from beyond the arc (19.4%) but it was enough for the Irish to get a win over legendary head coach Tubby Smith, who is one of just three coaches all-time to take five different programs to the NCAA Tournament.

Notre Dame lands impressive grad-transfer

Notre Dame basketball landed a huge piece of the 2021-22 puzzle as Paul Atkinson announced his commitment on Sunday night.

Mike Brey may have landed his biggest recruit to date on Sunday as grad-transfer to be Paul Atkinson has announced his intention to play at Notre Dame next season.

Atkinson started 60 games in three seasons at Yale and averaged 17.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game last season as he was named Ivy League Co-Player of the Year.

The Ivy League choosing not to play winter sports this year left Atkinson in a bit of a bind, but Notre Dame will gladly take his commitment.

Atkinson calls West Palm Beach, Florida home and attended high school at Westminster Christian School.

out his 2019-20 highlights below:

Former Notre Dame Running Back George Atkinson III Dead at 27

When I think of George Atkinson, III I think of an explosive play-maker who had absolutely mind-blowing speed.  His kickoff returns against Michigan State and USC in 2011 immediately come to mind while he had plenty of other huge runs during his three seasons.

Sad news out late Monday night that former Notre Dame running back and speedy return-man George Atkinson, III has died at the age of 27.

Atkinson’s twin brother Josh, also a former Notre Dame football player died unexpectedly last year.

George Atkinson III played for the Irish from 2011-2013, rushing for 10 touchdowns and returning two kickoffs for scores, both occurring in 2011.

Atkinson left for the NFL after his junior year, where he’d spend time with the Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs.
