Former Wisconsin basketball assistant lands job with AAU program in Iowa

Former Wisconsin men’s basketball assistant Dean Oliver announced his appointment as head coach of AAU program Iowa United Prep on Monday via social media.

Oliver spent seven seasons as one of Greg Gard’s assistants at UW and helped guide the program to a pair of Big Ten regular-season championships in 2019-20 and 2021-22.

The former Badger returns to where he began his basketball journey. He now mans the sidelines for Iowa United, the state’s premier amateur athletic union organization.

“After dedicating 13 years as a Division I assistant coach and 10 years as a professional basketball player, I am honored to accept this position,” Oliver said in his X statement.  This new chapter excites me as it allows me to continue contributing to the sport that has profoundly impacted my life and my family’s.”

Before joining the Badgers in 2017, Oliver coached at North Dakota from 2012-14 and Illinois State from 2015-17. A successful nine-year professional career, including two seasons with the NBA’s Golden State Warriors and several seasons in Europe, preceded his time as a coach.

Oliver’s specialty is rooted in developing the next generation’s guards. As a player, he suited up at guard from Iowa from 1998-2001 and pocketed third-team All-Big Ten honors on three occasions.

Given his experience in the development realm, Oliver is poised to excel in his next chapter with Iowa United.

Wisconsin basketball hires D-II head coach as new assistant

Wisconsin basketball finds a replacement for Dean Oliver:

Wisconsin basketball announced the hire of former D-II Saint Leo head coach Lance Randall as an assistant coach on Wednesday.

Randall joins head coach Greg Gard’s staff with over 400 career victories as a head coach. He replaces Dean Oliver on a Badgers coaching staff that now includes him, Joe Krabbenhoft, Sharif Chambliss and Kirk Penney as assistants.

“We are very pleased to welcome Lance Randall and his family to our staff,” Gard said in a statement to UWBadgers.com. “This search process was extensive and we evaluated a multitude of qualified candidates across many levels for the position. As we continue to evaluate and navigate the ever-changing college basketball landscape, I am confident that Lance will bring a wealth of experience and wide-range versatility to our program.”

Randall served as head coach for two stints at Saint Leo University (2011-15, 2019-24) and became the program’s all-time leader in wins. His long coaching career includes stops at Beloit College from 1994-97, Webster University from 1997-2000 and Lindenwood from 2015-19.

Randall is a Montfort, Wisconsin native and has deep ties to the state. His coaching experience and in-state connections should bring value to a program desperately in need of a resurgence.

Alabama assistant Ryan Pannone emerging as a finalist for Fresno State HC job

Fresno State basketball zeroing in on Alabama assistant Ryan Pannone as next head coach

After just one season with the Alabama Crimson Tide basketball program, assistant coach Ryan Pannone appears as if he may be on the move again as he has been tabbed as a finalist for the Fresno State head coaching vacancy, according to Mike Rodak of 247Sports. With the March Madness tournament still going on and the team preparing for the Final Four, I doubt we hear an announcement from either side soon but it appears as if he is their top target.

Pannone spent the first part of his career bouncing around overseas as an assistant before getting his first big break with the New Orleans Pelicans. After less than a year there, Pannone took one look at Tuscaloosa and saw all of the opportunities that [autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] assistants were getting and decided to follow that path.

Despite probably not being the most talented roster Alabama has ever had, it is their first-ever team to make a Final Four appearance. A large part of that success can be attributed to Oats as well as his entire coaching staff.

At only 39 years of age, Pannone is a hot young name in the coaching world and is the exact type of energy that is needed in this new name, image, likeness and transfer portal era. Especially when reviving a program like Fresno State that finished 12-21 a season ago.

Chiefs assistant coach Porter Ellett featured by NFL Films

#Chiefs assistant coach Porter Ellett was featured in a clip from NFL Films for his role in Kansas City’s Super Bowl LVIII victory.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ spectacular 2023 season ended with a Super Bowl LVIII victory against the San Francisco 49ers, due in no small part to the exceptional efforts of the team’s coaching staff.

One recognizable figure on Kansas City’s sideline last season was assistant running back coach Porter Ellett, who is affectionately known as Andy Reid’s left-hand man.

Ellett has been with the Chiefs since 2017 and was featured by NFL Films for his role in Kansas City’s latest Super Bowl run.

While assistant coaches rarely steal the spotlight, Ellett’s steady presence with the Chiefs made for an intriguing story and warranted a closer look.

It takes a concerted effort by every part of a team’s organization to achieve the success that Kansas City has found in recent seasons, and insights like the ones NFL Films gave fans with this video serve to illustrate the group effort that lifted the Chiefs to their latest championship.

Notre Dame football: Marcus Freeman on firing of Chasni Stuckey

Freeman speaks on the move…

In a bit of surprising news Tuesday, Notre Dame announced the termination of Chasni Stuckey as wide receivers coach.

Stuckey had been with Notre Dame for each of Marcus Freeman’s two years as head coach as he replaced Del Alexander in the role.

Notre Dame released a statement on Tuesday evening regarding the move.  It included the following statements from Freeman:

“First of all, I want to thank Chansi for all of the work he put into our program,” said Freeman. “ I wish Chansi and his family all the best.

Over the past few days, we had continued discussions on the overall performance of our wide receiver group and my expectations for the development of that position. I decided it was in the program’s best interest to part ways.”

The release also noted that current offensive coordinator Gerad Parker will coach Notre Dame’s receivers in preparation for their upcoming bowl game.

Report: Michigan State relieves assistant football coaches of their duties

MSU has reportedly fired all of its assistant coaches

Michigan State’s 2023 football season ended last night inside of Ford Field with a historically horrific offensive performance against Penn State, losing 42-0. Now, with the season over, Athletic Director Alan Haller has made the decision to remove the rest of the Spartans coaching staff.

According to a report from Detroit Free Press reporter Chris Solari, all assistant coaches have been relieved of their duties with the university.

One would assume the next Michigan State head coach will assess the staff and bring back who they see fit.

Sooners assistant due for a raise according to USA TODAY Sports

The Oklahoma Sooners have had a bounce back season in 2023 and USA TODAY Sports believes one OU assistant is due for a raise.

The Oklahoma Sooners have a chance to finish the season with double-digit wins in Brent Venables’ second season in Norman.

After going 6-7 in 2022, the idea in 2023 was simply to get better. And they’ve done that across the board. The offense is playing at a higher level, but, more importantly, the defense has improved.

As we near the conclusion of the 2023 season, the coaching carousel has already begun across the college football landscape. Several Power Five jobs have opened up, which means coach movement will unfold over the next few weeks.

As the season winds down, USA TODAY Sports’ Tom Schad broke down seven assistants he believes deserve a pay raise. Either because they had a strong season or simply because their current program would be wise to do what they need to to keep the assistant.

Among Schad’s seven assistants who deserve a raise is Oklahoma Sooners co-defensive coordinator – pass defense, cornerbacks and nickelbacks coach [autotag]Jay Valai[/autotag].

Oklahoma is tied for the FBS lead with 17 interceptions, including two last weekend against West Virginia and two that have been returned for touchdowns. It’s a credit to the Sooners’ entire defensive staff but also the impact of Valai, who has been highly sought-after in recent years and looks poised to take another step. The 36-year-old spent one year in the NFL, as a quality control coach with the Kansas City Chiefs, and has since coached defensive backs at some of the nation’s premier football programs, including stints at Alabama and Texas before arriving at Oklahoma in 2022. – Schad, USA TODAY Sports

Valai is making $700,000 a year.

The Oklahoma Sooners secondary has been significantly better in 2022 than it was a year ago. The unit has improved from 119th in the nation in pass defense to 90th. A year ago, the Sooners were 10th in the nation in interceptions per game. This year, they’re tied for first. They have done this while dealing with injuries at cornerback and safety throughout the season.

As Schad mentions, it’s been a total team improvement, but the secondary has made a big jump in understanding of the defense to execution. At the same time, you can’t deny the effect Valai has had on the cornerbacks and the pass defense.

Valai was a strong hire shortly after Brent Venables’ arrival, and two years in, it’s paying dividends. It may be time for the Sooners to pay Valai.

Contracts announced for Alabama MBB’s two new assistant coaches

New Alabama basketball assistants agree to two-year deals each

[autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] got his first taste of Nick Saban’s life this off-season as he had all three of his assistant coaches from the 2022-2023 season poached by different programs. Now, not only will he have to replace probably the best player in program history, Brandon Miller, but he has had to entirely revamp his coaching staff.

All three of the former assistants accepted head coaching positions with other programs. Antoine Pettway accepted the head coaching position with Kennesaw State, Charlie Henry departed for Georgia Southern and Bryan Hodgson left for Arkansas State.

Two of those three positions have been filled by Ryan Pannone and Austin Claunch. There is still a third opening, but Oats doesn’t appear to be in any rush to fill the position. Alabama landed Pannone from the New Orleans Pelicans and Claunch from Nicholls State, where he served as the head coach.

Both Claunch and Pannone met with the Alabama athletic department Tuesday to discuss their new contracts and salaries. Pannone signed a two-year deal worth $330,000 annually and Claunch signed for two years worth $275,000 annually.
