Recent wide receiver offers by the Oklahoma Sooners signal a shift in philosophy

The Sooners recent WR offers reveal a shift in philosophy on the recruiting trail.

Oklahoma has had its fair share of talented wide receivers over the years. CeeDee Lamb, Sterling Shephard, Ryan Broyles, Mark Clayton, Malcolm Kelly, Dede Westbrook, and Tommy McDonald were all stars for the Crimson & Cream. They came in different shapes and sizes, but one thing remained true: They produced year after year. They showed up and showed out for the Sooners and earned the right to be considered one of the best wide receivers in Sooners history.

The Sooners have never really had a mold for what makes a wide receiver great, which is unique.

CeeDee Lamb was a skinny rail-thin kid from Foster, Texas, that was explosive and would catch almost anything in his radius. He’d go up and get jump balls but also take a drag route to the house after 65 yards. Broyles was highly effective in the intermediate areas as a first-down conversion machine, while Dede Westbrook could take the top off any defense with his speed. Malcolm Kelly made acrobatic catch after acrobatic catch.

As we look at this current group of Sooners, we see many different types of receivers. Those are all receivers brought in and recruited by Lincoln Riley, who had no set type of build he liked at receiver. Riley was reasonably simple in evaluating his receivers. He wanted guys who could simply play. It’s hard to fault him considering what his offenses did in his time at Oklahoma, but things have changed, and he’s left the prairies for the fast life of L.A., where he coaches the Trojans of USC.

Jeff Lebby, a Sooner alum and an up-and-coming offensive coordinator in his own right, has now assumed the offensive duties of the Crimson and Cream. With him, he brings an entirely new outlook on offense and personnel.

His offense doesn’t mirror Riley’s, but the biggest contrast comes with how Lebby has attacked personnel so far.

Upon his arrival as the Sooners’ new OC, Lebby offered wide receiver, Jayden Gibson. Gibson was at the time a Florida commit, and eventually, he’d flip from Florida to Oklahoma. Gibson stands at 6-foot-4. He’s enrolled and working out as an early enrollee.

That started a significant and noticeable trend of offers being shipped out to other wide receivers of the 2023 and 2024 classes. Lebby primarily likes his receivers big with long frames.

Here’s where we can draw this conclusion: Jaden Greathouse (6-foot-2), Jalen Hale (6-foot-2), and Aidan Mizell (6-foot-3) have taken precedent over guys like DeAndre Moore Jr, who recently decommitted from the Sooners.

There’s speculation that they weren’t impressed with Moore’s junior year tape and a knee injury also played a part. While both things could be true, Moore is a top 50 talent, and they still could’ve had him in the class if they wanted due to his relationship with DeMarco Murray.

The recruitment isn’t over but casting Moore while pursuing guys like Greathouse, Ashton Cozart, and Hale signals they are content moving in a different direction.

2023 Top100 recruit Jacobe Johnson from Mustang, Okla. has also been targeted by the Sooners. Johnson stands 6-foot-3.

Lebby wants big athletes out wide and will likely get those with the pool of talent he can recruit from while at Oklahoma.

The Sooners will still recruit smaller receivers, and Lebby will use them. Just look at former Ole Miss star turned early second-rounder for the New York Jets, Elijah Moore. He was a monster for them and was no bigger than Drake Stoops. Under Lebby, Moore posted 86 catches for 1,193 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. The reception yards were the most by an SEC player through the first eight games of a season.

However, it remains painfully apparent that Lebby will recruit outside receivers with length, long speed, and big frames and fill the slot with smaller, shiftier guys.

In a way, the Sooners could resemble the Clemson teams that Venables was a part of. Lately, on offense, they had big receivers like Tee Higgins, Justyn Ross and had smaller guys like Hunter Renfrow and Armani Rodgers in the slot.

It’s a fascinating change from seeing receivers of all sizes playing all over the field for the Sooners. Still, if the recent offers are any indication, the Sooners are heading toward a “big” shift at wide receiver.

What the Oklahoma Sooners are getting in 2023 WR commit Ashton Cozart?

What type of player are the Oklahoma Sooners getting with the commitment of 2023 four-star wide receiver Ashton Cozart?

The Sooners continued their positive momentum on the recruiting trail with another commitment this week. The 2022 class is done with just two prospects remaining on the Sooners’ radar for that class. Every other player has signed or is enrolled.

The focus is now on the 2023 class and in recent weeks it’s started to see some action. 2023 wide receiver Ashton Cozart becomes the latest commit to the Crimson & Cream.

He announced his decision Friday night and becomes the lone wide receiver commit in the class following the decommitment of Top 50 wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. Cozart is from Flower Mound, Texas and was being recruited heavily by TCU, Alabama, and Texas.

With him on board, let’s take a look at how he fits what the Sooners would like to do offensively.

Cozart is a taller receiver listed at 6-foot-3. His film shows a receiver that looks almost exclusively like an outside receiver option. He does an excellent job getting vertical and facing defensive backs out of their backpedal. He has long strides and track speed (ran a 10.74 100M dash as a high school sophomore).

Cozart tracks the ball well and looks very comfortable on vertical routes. His high school tape doesn’t show him being used on intermediate routes often but in due time and with more repetitions it’s easy to see him becoming more comfortable in that area.

Mozart shines with the ball in his hands. He displays an ability to make people miss after the catch. For a guy with his speed, being able to make people miss with create more opportunities for big plays.

All in all, Cozart is an excellent four-star receiver prospect for the Sooners. He adds size and elite speed at wide receiver and will continue to develop his whole route tree. His high school’s offense doesn’t feed him the ball but he was highly productive on just 36 catches and scored 11 touchdowns.

A team can never have too much size and speed and it’s not impossible to think Cozart develops into a starter-level receiver for the Oklahoma Sooners in his time at Norman.

Oklahoma earns commitment from 2023 four-star wide receiver Ashton Cozart

Oklahoma picked up its fourth commitment in the 2023 class from four-star wide receiver Ashton Cozart out of Flower Mound, Texas.

Fresh off a late national signing day flurry, Oklahoma got a jumpstart on its 2023 recruiting class Friday evening.

Four-star wide receiver Ashton Cozart out of Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas, announced his commitment to the Sooners.

With recent predictions swinging in the Sooners’ direction, it appeared that Cozart was trending toward committing to Oklahoma. Now, it’s official.

Cozart becomes Oklahoma’s fourth pledge in the 2023 class alongside four-star quarterback Jackson Arnold out of Denton, Texas, three-star offensive lineman Joshua Bates from Durango, Colo. and athlete Erik McCarty out of McAlester, Okla.

On3 ranks Cozart as the nation’s No. 62 player overall, the No. 8 wide receiver and the ninth-best player from the state of Texas in the 2023 class. ESPN rates Cozart as the No. 97 prospect nationally, the No. 19 wide receiver and the 19th-ranked player from Texas.

247Sports lists Cozart as the No. 119 player nationally, the No. 13 wide receiver and the 25th-best player from Texas. Rivals has Cozart as a three-star pledge and the No. 48 wide receiver.

In the On3 consensus rankings, Cozart is the No. 116 player nationally, the No. 19 wide receiver and the No. 21 player from Texas. According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Cozart is ranked as the No. 166 player overall, the No. 24 wide receiver and the No. 31 player from Texas.

OU earned the commitment from the 6-foot-3, 170 pound wide receiver over schools such as Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State,Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

The commitment ends a week that began for the Sooners with the decommitment from another four-star wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr.

ESPN says Jeff Lebby’s biggest challenge is to ‘keep Oklahoma a QB destination’

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg says that the biggest challenge for OU offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby is to keep OU a destination for quarterbacks.

If the biggest challenge coming in was to keep Oklahoma a popular destination for quarterback and offensive skill players as ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg writes, then consider new OU offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby’s first month and change a success thus far.

OU flipped and signed 2022 four-star quarterback Nick Evers away from the Florida Gators. Then, Lebby landed one of the most highly-regarded quarterbacks out of the transfer portal in UCF transfer Dillon Gabriel.

To top it all off, Lebby and Oklahoma also added a commitment from class of 2023 four-star quarterback Jackson Arnold out of Denton Guyer in Texas.

Rittenberg said Oklahoma provides Lebby with “a new degree of autonomy” as he’s paired up with a defensive-minded head coach in Brent Venables as compared to Art Briles, Josh Heupel and Lane Kiffin.

But Oklahoma also had to offset the impact of Riley’s departure for its offense. The Sooners need to remain an attractive program for quarterbacks and other offensive playmakers, which is why Lebby’s hiring will be so significant. Lebby has been part of dynamic offenses at Baylor, UCF and most recently Ole Miss. He has coordinated top-four offenses in each of the past three years. But he also has worked alongside offensive-minded head coaches (Art Briles, Josh Heupel and Lane Kiffin).

Oklahoma provides him a new degree of autonomy.

Lebby’s arrival is off to a promising start. Oklahoma added quarterback transfer Dillon Gabriel, who initially committed to UCLA but switched to OU after Caleb Williams entered the transfer portal. Gabriel played under Lebby at UCF in 2019, passing for 3,653 yards and 29 touchdowns. Lebby also has helped fortify Oklahoma’s quarterback room for the future. Oklahoma landed ESPN 300 quarterback Nick Evers, a Florida commit, just before the December signing date, and recently added Jackson Arnold, ESPN’s No. 2 dual-threat quarterback and No. 43 overall junior for the 2023 class. Lebby inherits an offensive depth chart that took several hits after Riley’s departure, but if he can get through 2022, better days are likely ahead.

He also should benefit from Oklahoma retaining four offensive coaches from Riley’s staff, including longtime Sooners assistants Bill Bedenbaugh (started as offensive line coach in 2013) and Cale Gundy (has coached OU’s wide receivers or running backs since 1999). – Rittenberg, ESPN.

With the talented quarterbacks that Oklahoma has brought into the program, it’s apparent that Lebby can land highly sought-after signal-callers. While OU lost the commitment from 2023 wide receiver DeAndre Moore Jr., it looks like the Sooners may soon be adding a commitment from 2023 wide receiver Ashton Cozart based on recent recruiting projections.

The continuity with the coaching staff helped the Sooners retain and sign running back Gavin Sawchuk and wide receiver Nicholas Anderson. Oklahoma also flipped and signed wide receiver Jayden Gibson from Florida, so the early returns are that OU is going to continue to find talented skill talent.

The best way to remain an attractive destination to quarterbacks and offensive skill talent? Recapturing the Big 12 title, making a College Football Playoff return and doing so with an explosive offense.

Sooners receive Crystal Ball projection for 2023 four-star wide receiver Ashton Cozart

The Oklahoma Sooners received a second Crystal Ball projection for 2023 four-star wide receiver Ashton Cozart of Texas.

The Oklahoma Sooners didn’t seem to miss a beat on the recruiting trail during the transition. Though they might have lost a few players that were committed to Lincoln Riley, they’ve rebounded nicely and continue to make progress to landing a top recruiting class in 2023.

While they only have three players for the 2023 class currently committed, it’s still set up to be a nice haul with four-star players DeAndre Moore, Jr., Jackson Arnold, and fast-rising three-star Joshua Bates in the fold. Although they’re a year away from 2023 national signing day, they’re making great progress on some of the top recruits in the 2023 class.

Yesterday, the Sooners received a 247Sports Crystal Ball projection from OUInsider’s Parker Thune. Over the last month, that’s the second Crystal Ball projection in favor of the Oklahoma Sooners. Earlier in January, Brandon Drumm, also of OUInsider at 247Sports issued a projection for Cozart to land with the Oklahoma Sooners. On3 Recruiting currently projects a 63% chance that the Sooners will land a commitment from Ashton Cozart.

There has been mutual interest between Cozart and Oklahoma, but because of the coaching change things were left in flux for the 2023 four-star wide receiver out of Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. While the coaching staff was in transition, Cale Gundy and the rest of the assistants continued their push for Cozart who’s received interest from a lot of the top schools in the country, including Alabama and Texas.

One of his primary recruiters from Alabama was new cornerbacks coach Jay Valai. Ole Miss was also showing interest in Cozart during his recruitment. Ole Miss’ former offensive coordinator, Jeff Lebby, now resides in Norman and is calling plays for the Sooners. There are quite a few dots connecting between the Sooners and the talented junior.

Cozart is rated as a four-star wide receiver by both 247Sports and On3 Recruiting composites and ranks inside the top 23 at his position nationally every but Rivals. He has nice size at 6-foot-3 and 190 lbs to be a starter on the outside for the Oklahoma Sooners and ran a 10.74 100-meter dash as a sophomore in high school.

The details and expected visitors for Oklahoma’s first Junior Day under Brent Venables

The Sooners will host their first junior day under Brent Venables with recruits from across the country coming to visit Norman.

The Oklahoma Sooners will follow up last week’s major recruiting weekend with another one this weekend. Junior Day allows the Sooners staff the opportunity to have class of 2023 players across the country to come in, tour the facility and continue working on relationships coaches have already started forming.

Junior Days used to be massive with hundreds of athletes coming in but most schools now have thinned it out and tried to make it a more intimate experience, limiting it to only players the schools legitimately are interested in.

Last weekend’s recruiting bonanza had a heavy focus on the class of 2022 as most of the visitors were recruits who were undecided, in need of some confirmation, or were getting their first real look at what Oklahoma has to offer.

The visit went well with longtime recruit Gentry Williams effectively ending his recruitment and affirming his commitment to the Sooners. Gracen Halton, the then Oregon commit’s visit went so well that the recruiting world submitted multiple predictions that he would be flipping to the Oklahoma Sooners on signing day. This was then followed up by a decommitment from Oregon fueling the flames even more.

For the Sooners, back-to-back weekends of major recruiting implications are exactly what this program needs as they h look to replenish their 2023 class which was affected by the departure of Lincoln Riley. New staff and opportunities inbound. With that said, we’ve compiled a list of every Junior Day visitor that is known so far:

Four-star ATH Jacobe Johnson

Four-star  EDGE rusher Bai Jobe

Four-star ATH Micah Tease

Four-star QB Jackson Arnold — OU Commit

Four-star WR Ashton Cozart

ATH Erik McCarty

Four-star OL Knijeah Harris

Three-Star OL Joshua Bates — OU Commit

As more names continue to trickle in, we’ll continue updating the list with each name as they confirm their intentions on whether they’ll be in Norman this weekend or not.

3 2023 recruits recently projected to the Oklahoma Sooners

Wide receiver Ashton Cozart, defensive end Bai Jobe and running back Erik McCarty have all been projected to OU in recent days.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbz7cqqgxy50qwt player_id=none image=https://soonerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Three players in the 2023 recruiting class have recently been projected to Oklahoma.

Wide receiver Ashton Cozart out of Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas, defensive end and edge rusher Bai Jobe out of Community Christian School in Norman, Okla., and running back Erik McCarty out of McAlester High School in McAlester, Okla.

OUInsider‘s Brandon Drumm of 247Sports put in a crystal-ball projection for Cozart to the Sooners late Tuesday night.

Cozart is a 6-foot-3, 180 pound wide receiver that is ranked the No. 63 player nationally by On3, No. 97 by ESPN and No. 120 by 247Sports. All of those services have Cozart listed as a four-star receiver.

Rivals rates Cozart as a three-star wide receiver and the nation’s 48th-best receiver.

SoonerScoop‘s Josh McCuistion also issued a Rivals Forecast for Jobe to the Sooners on Tuesday.

Jobe is listed as a three-star recruit and the nation’s 23rd-highest rated weakside defensive end according to Rivals.

The 6-foot-4, 215 pound recruit is ranked as a four-star prospect by 247Sports, On3 and ESPN.

247Sports ranks Jobe as the nation’s 60th player overall and No. 7 edge rusher, On3 rates Jobe as the No. 192 player nationally and No. 23 edge rusher and ESPN lists Jobe as the No. 244 player in the 2023 class and 33rd-best defensive end.

Lastly, SoonerScoop’s McCuistion and On3’s Hudson Standish of InsideTexas put in projections for McCarty to Oklahoma over the last few days.

Standish put in his On3 Prediction for McCarty to Oklahoma on Monday and McCuistion submitted a Rivals Forecast on Tuesday.

McCarty is a 6-foot-2, 180 pound running back at McAlester and he’s listed as a three-star recruit according to Rivals.

Of course, two of these three projections include players from the Sooner State. Keeping in-state talent continues to be an early recruiting push from Venables and his staff.
