Report: Jaguars interested in Titans OC Arthur Smith for HC vacancy

The Jags will be looking within their division at a coaching candidate in Arthur Smith, who is the Titans offensive coordinator.

With their head coaching job now open, Urban Meyer is no longer the only coaching candidate the Jacksonville Jaguars are known to have interest in. Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is now on their radar.

While it’s unclear whether or not the Jags have asked him for an interview already, their interest in Smith isn’t shocking when considering he’s been highly successful in the AFC South. As their coordinator, he played a huge part in them finishing the regular season second in rushing (168.1 YPG average) and second in total offense (396.4 YPG average).

In terms of his coaching career, Smith started his coaching as a graduate assistant with his alma mater North Carolina (2006). He then joined the Washington Football Team as a defensive quality control assistant (2007-08), then Ole Miss as an intern and administrative assistant (2010). He then found his way to the Titans’ staff in 2011 as a defensive assistant and quality control coach — and worked his way up to the offensive coordinator role in 2019.

With the young skill players the Jags have in DJ Chark, Laviska Shenault Jr., and James Robinson, Smith would have something to work with in Duval when considering what he’s done with Ryan Tannehill, A.J. Brown, Derrick Henry, and company. If that isn’t enough, having the No. 1 overall pick, ample cap space, and patient ownership should make the job even more appealing in comparison to others.

Report: Titans’ Arthur Smith drawing interest for all 6 HC openings

Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has drawn interest for all six openings at head coach in the NFL.

Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has drawn interest for all six openings for head coach in the NFL.

This list of teams that have requested an interview or plan to ask for permission for an interview with Smith includes the New York Jets, Los Angeles Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons and the Houston Texans, as indicated by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

This is one of the more consistent Titans teams we’ve seen in recent history, and Smith is partially to thank for that.

He’s been an integral part of the Titans’ offensive success this year, as the team capped off the 2020 regular season with a win over the division rival Texans, coming into the contest with the No. 3 offense in the league.

If Smith is to take one of these jobs ahead of the 2021 season, it wouldn’t be far from the first time the Titans have had their offensive coordinator snagged by another team.

The Green Bay Packers poached Matt LaFleur from the team in 2019, hiring him at head coach.

Report: Jets — and every other team with an opening — interested in Titans OC Arthur Smith

The Jets are one of six teams interested in interviewing Titans OC Arthur Smith.

The Jets are one of six teams who have requested permission or plan to ask permission to interview Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Chargers, Jaguars, Lions, Falcons and Texans — every other team with a vacancy — are the other five.

The 38-year-old Smith has been with the Titans organization since 2011. Smith has worked his way up the ranks and has spent the last two seasons as Tennessee’s offensive coordinator. He’s also served as an offensive and defensive quality control coach, offensive line coach, assistant tight ends coach and tight ends coach.

The Titans have one of the top offenses in the NFL under Smith. Tennessee is third in yards per game (396.4 yards), 23rd in passing yards per game (228.3 yards), second in rushing yards per game (168.1 yards) and fourth in points per game (30.8 points). Smith has been heavily credited with resurrecting Ryan Tannehill’s career after the quarterback was inconsistent in Miami under Adam Gase.

Smith will be one of many candidates the Jets consider. They’ve already put in a request to interview Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy, Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and Colts DC Matt Eberflus.

Report: Jets request interview with Bills OC Brian Daboll

The Jets have requested to interview Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Add another NFL coordinator to the list of candidates to replace Adam Gase.

The Jets requested an interview with Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll on Monday afternoon, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. New York has already requested an interview with Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy and Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. It is also expected to request an interview with Titans OC Arthur Smith, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Per Pelissero, the Jets cannot interview Daboll until after Buffalo’s wild card game on Saturday. Once the game is complete, the Bills cannot deny New York permission to conduct its interview.

Daboll has turned Buffalo’s offense into one of the most productive units in football since joining Sean McDermott’s staff in 2018. Daboll has also played an instrumental role in Josh Allen’s development, helping him throw for 7,633 yards, 57 touchdowns and 19 interceptions the last two seasons. Stefon Diggs also enjoyed the best year of his elite career during his first season in Buffalo (127 receptions, 1,535 yards, 8 touchdowns).

Prior to his stint with the Bills, Daboll spent 2017 working under Nick Saban as Alabama’s co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. From 2013-16, he was an offensive assistant and tight ends coach with the Patriots. Daboll served as the Chiefs offensive coordinator in 2012, Dolphins OC in 2011 and Browns OC from 2009-2010 after two years as the Jets’ quarterbacks coach.

Daboll got his start in coaching as a restrictive earnings coach at William & Mary in 1997. He moved on to become a graduate assistant at Michigan State before joining the Patriots as a defensive assistant (2000-01) and wide receivers coach (2002-06).

Report: Detroit Lions have 4 GM and 3 coaching interviews scheduled this week

Multiple sources are reporting that the Detroit Lions are aggressively interviewing general manager and coaching candidates this week.

MMQB’s Albert Breer and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport have reported several interviews this week for the Detroit Lions general manager and coaching vacancies.

In total, the Lions reportedly will interview four general manager and three coaching candidates over the next five days, as well as two more coaching interviews set up for next week.

At a glance interview schedule

Monday Eric Bieniemy, Chiefs’ OC (source)
Tuesday Darrell Bevell, Lions’ OC (source) Terry Fontenot, Saints’ Asst. GM, VP Pro personnel (source)
Wednesday Brad Holmes, Rams’ Dir. College Scouting (source) Geroge Paton, Vikings’ Asst. GM (source)
Thursday Robert Saleh, 49ers’ DC (source)
Friday Jeff Ireland, Saints’ Asst. GM, VP college scouting (source)
Next Week Arthur Smith, Titans’ OC (source) Dan Campbell, Saints’ Asst. Head Coach, TE coach (source)
TBD John Schneider, Seahawks’ GM (source)

Bieniemy, Saleh, and Smith were all identified and profiled in Lions Wire’s Top-10 coaching options for the Lions, and fans should be familiar with Bevell as he was the Lions OC over the last two seasons, but this is the first time we have discussed Dan Campbell.

Campbell is a former NFL tight end, spent three seasons (2006-08) with the Lions, and began coaching in 2010 with the Miami Dolphins. After five years as their tight ends coach, he was promoted to interim coach in 2015 but was let go after the season. He joined the Saints the next season as their tight ends coach and also carried an assistant head coach (to Sean Payton) title.

Paton and Ireland were candidates identified and profiled in Lions Wire’s Top general manager candidates, we also profiled Holmes last week, then Schneider over the weekend, and while we have mentioned Fontenot in other articles, we haven’t profiled him yet.

Fontenot, like Ireland, is an assistant general manager with the Saints, but while Ireland is focused on the college scouting side of the front office, Fontenot deals with their pro personnel department. Fontenot has been with the Saints’ organization for 16 seasons, beginning his career as a scout, and overseeing the pro scouting department for the last six seasons.

Report: Jets to request permission to interview Titans OC Arthur Smith

Smith was also linked to the Detroit Lions in a separate report.

The New York Jets are just the latest team that will reportedly show interest in Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith for their head-coaching vacancy.

The Jets, who just capped off a disastrous 2-14 season with a 28-14 Week 17 loss to the New England Patriots, are in the market for a new head coach after Adam Gase was canned following Sunday’s loss.

And, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets are planning to request an interview with Smith, who figures to be one of the hottest candidates for vacancies this offseason after calling the plays for a Titans offense that has been one of the best in the NFL since Week 7 of last season.

This is the second team Smith has been linked to on Monday, as an earlier report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport revealed that the Detroit Lions have already requested an interview with Smith.

Adding to that, the Lions, along with the Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans, are also going to consider Smith for their openings, per a report on Sunday from Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo.

Report: Lions request interview with Titans OC Arthur Smith

Smith will be one of the hottest names in head-coaching searches this offseason.

The Detroit Lions have already begun their search for a new head coach, and one of the interview requests they have reportedly put in is with Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Smith is one of four coaches the Lions have put in a request to interview with.

Other names on the list include San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator, Robert Saleh, Saints TEs coach, Dan Campbell, and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator, Eric Bieniemy.

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as Smith figures to be one of the hottest names for head-coaching vacancies this offseason after calling the plays for one of the most potent offenses in the NFL since Week 7 of last season.

There are currently five head-coaching vacancies in the NFL, with the Lions, New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans all looking for a new lead man.

In a report by Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo from Sunday, three of those teams — the Lions, Falcons and Texans — are expected to target Smith. Clearly the Lions have already started.

The Titans are no strangers to having their offensive coordinator poached, as the Green Bay Packers hired Matt LaFleur off Tennessee’s staff in 2019.

5 traits the Jets must look for in Adam Gase’s replacement

The Jets need to find a new head coach who can develop talent, build a competent staff and work well with the front office.

The Jets have an important offseason on their hands, and it will start with finding their next head coach after the team fired Adam Gase.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero said the Jets will conduct a “lengthy and thorough search” for a new head coach that could include Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, Ravens defensive coordinator Don Martindale and Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, among others.

Whomever the Jets tab as their next coach will play a crucial role in the construction of the team Joe Douglas spent the past 19 months building, as well as grooming the players the Jets draft in April – especially if they take a quarterback with the No. 2 pick. They’ll need to make sure the person they hire can finally vault the franchise into the postseason, something the Jets haven’t tasted since 2010.

Here are five traits the Jets need to look for in their next head coach.

The top 10 head-coaching candidates Jets should consider to replace Adam Gase

Jets Wire unveils its list of the top 10 candidates to replace Adam Gase.

With Adam Gase’s tenure as Jets head coach over, it’s time to take a look at who could replace him.

Fortunately for Joe Douglas and New York, the cupboard is full of candidates who can turn the Jets around. From bright college coaches to innovative offensive minds and some candidates with impressive defensive backgrounds, Douglas will have plenty of intriguing candidates to choose from this offseason.

Now that the Jets and Gase have officially parted ways, Jets Wire will take a look at who could replace Gase from a variety of angles. To start, here are Jets Wire’s top 10 candidates to replace him, a should-be, ranked wish list if the Jets had their pick of the litter.

Report: Titans’ Arthur Smith a potential HC target for 3 teams

Smith has called the plays for one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL this season.

There will be a real interest in Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith for a head-coaching vacancy in 2021, and now we have a good idea which teams could be looking for his services.

According to Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero, and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, at least three teams are expected to target Smith, including the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, and Houston Texans.

Of course, all three of those teams will cast a wide net to find their next head coach, so Smith is just one of multiple candidates listed for each team in the report.

Titans VP of player personnel, Ryan Cowden, was also named in the report as a possible target for the Washington Football Team’s general manager opening.

Just speculating here, but Smith could also become a name to watch for other teams that are expected to have a vacancy following the regular-season finale, like the New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Smith will be one of the most talked-about names this offseason thanks to his wealth of success as the Titans’ offensive coordinator.

Tennessee sported one of the best offenses from Week 7 of last season when Ryan Tannehill took over as the starting quarterback and the Titans made a run.

That success has continued during the 2020 season, with the Titans sporting the No. 3 offense in the NFL going into Week 17. In fact, with the way the defense has played, the Titans wouldn’t be where they are without their explosive offense.

Should the Titans lose Smith and need a new offensive coordinator next season, it would be a familiar place for this franchise to be in.

In 2019, the Titans had former offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur poached by the Green Bay Packers, and since 2010 the franchise has seen seven different coaches at the position.
