Broncos’ Lloyd Cushenberry nominated for Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

Denver Bronco center Lloyd Cushenberry has been nominated for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award.

The Denver Broncos have nominated center Lloyd Cushenberry for the 2023 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, the team announced Tuesday.

According to the NFL’s website, “The (Art Rooney Award) is presented each year to an NFL player who best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents and integrity in competition.”

Cushenberry is a fourth-year veteran who has been a starting offensive lineman who has played nearly every snap since he came into the league in 2020.

This is not the first time Cushenberry has been recognized for his on-field sportsmanship. While he was a player at LSU in college, he was the first offensive lineman in school history to wear the No. 18 jersey, which is given to player who “represents what it means to be an LSU player both on and off the field.”

Cushenberry is one of 32 players to be nominated for the award in 2023, and the winner will be announced at the NFL Honors ceremonies at the end of the year. Other nominees from around the league include Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby, Los Angeles Chargers pass rusher Khalil Mack and Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie.

Rams nominate Jordan Fuller for 2023 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

Rams safety Jordan Fuller is one of 32 nominees for the 2023 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

Last season was a challenging one for Jordan Fuller. He was limited to just three games due to a hamstring injury, which ended his season in Week 4.

He’s returned as a full-time starter and captain this year, and now he’s up for one of the most prestigious awards in the NFL. The Rams have nominated Fuller for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, which is given to the player who best displays “on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.”

He’s one of 32 nominees across the league, one from each team. There are also two former Rams nominated by their teams: Robert Woods with the Texans and Bobby Wagner with the Seahawks.

Below is a list of all 32 nominees for this year’s award.

Fuller has been a leader for the Rams since joining them as a sixth-round pick in 2020, immediately becoming a starter as a rookie and then a captain in 2021.

He also wore the green dot as the defensive signal caller in just his second season, a rarity for a player that early in his career – especially at the safety position.

Saints nominate Ryan Ramczyk for 2022 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

The Saints nominated Ryan Ramczyk for the 2022 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, which was won by Drew Brees in 2018 and Teddy Bridgewater in 2020:

Here’s some well-deserved recognition: the New Orleans Saints nominated right tackle Ryan Ramczyk for the 2022 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, per an NFL press release. The annual award was established in 2014 to honor the late Pittsburgh Steelers owner, “which recognizes players around the league who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship on the field.”

Ramczyk, who was elected a team captain for the first time this year, is one of the longest-tenured starters on the team. He’s a foundational piece for the Saints offense now and moving forward. Drafted in 2017 as a left tackle out of Wisconsin, he unexpectedly moved to the right side after an early-season injury to longtime Saints tackle Zach Strief, and he’s held the job down ever since. The Saints rewarded him with a long-term contract extension last summer, and his mentor Strief returned to the team as an assistant coach.

Two of Ramczyk’s quarterbacks have won this award before: Drew Brees did it in 2018, and Teddy Bridgewater followed up in 2020 (with the Carolina Panthers, natch). The Saints nominated Cameron Jordan for the award last season.

We’ll see if Ramczyk advances to the next stage as a finalist later in December. The Art Rooney Award winner is announced at the annual NFL Honors event before the Super Bowl in February, and it might be a memorable evening for several Saints offensive linemen: longtime right guard Jahri Evans has been named a semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023, which will be announced at the same occasion. Good luck to both standout players.

Roquan Smith named Bears’ 2021 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award nominee

Roquan Smith is the Bears’ nominee for the 2021 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, which recognizes outstanding sportsmanship on the field.

There’s a lot to love about Bears linebacker Roquan Smith, who’s establishing himself as one of the game’s best linebackers. But it’s not just Smith’s production that makes him great, it’s the way he plays the game.

Smith has been named the Bears’ nominee for the 2021 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award, which recognizes players around the NFL who exemplify outstanding sportsmanship on the field.

The award, established in 2014, honors late founding owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pro Football Hall of Famer Art Rooney Sr. It is presented to an NFL player who best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.

In 12 games, Smith has totaled 115 tackles (5th in the NFL), including nine for a loss, three sacks, three pass breakups, one interception and one touchdown.

Panthers QB Teddy Bridgewater wins Art Rooney Sportsmanship award

Running back Christian McCaffrey said Bridgewater is a great teammate.

For the most part, the Panthers struck out at last night’s NFL Honors ceremony. Jeremy Chinn was beaten out for Defensive Rookie of the Year by Chase Young, Sam Mills and Jared Allen missed out on the Hall of Fame and Shaq Thompson lost to Russell Wilson in the Walter Payton Man of the Year vote. They did take home one piece of hardware, though.

For-now-starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewater won the league’s Art Rooney Sportsmanship award, which is given to players who exemplify how to handle yourself off the field. Running back Christian McCaffrey said Bridgewater is a great teammate.

Luke Kuechly won the same award back in 2017.

Despite having had a frustrating 2020 season, Bridgewater continues to be nothing but a class-act, even amid speculation that he’s about to be replaced.

Speaking last month on the subject of a new QB coming in, Bridgewater said business is business, per the Athletic.

“I’ve been through so much in my career, and I understand business is business. But that doesn’t affect me. . . Whatever happens this offseason, happens. I’m pretty sure the team will make the best move in the interest of the team. For me, I just have to control what I can control, which is how hard I work, the type of leader that I am, the amount of time and work I put in this offseason.”

Bridgewater hit the exact right note, here. Whatever else he has done on the field, he’s conducted himself flawlessly since signing with the Panthers.

Teddy Bridgewater named Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award winner

Former New Orleans Saints QB Teddy Bridgewater won the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award after his first full season with the Carolina Panthers

[jwplayer F57WSh1B-ThvAeFxT]

One former member of the New Orleans Saints is celebrating on Saturday night: Carolina Panthers quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who won the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award at this year’s NFL Honors event.

Established in 2014, this award is defined as recognition for the player who “best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition,” and was previously won by Bridgewater’s brief mentor Drew Brees following the 2018 season. Other winners include Adrian Peterson, Luke Kuechly, Frank Gore, Charles Woodson (now bound for the Pro Football Hall of Fame), and Larry Fitzgerald.

Bridgwater’s first full season as a starter since 2015 didn’t go quite as well as hoped in Carolina, where it took some time for first-year head coach Matt Rhule to get a feel for what he had on offense while a defense nearly entirely made up of rookies struggled to find an identity.

Still, Bridgewater’s leadership traits were often on display, and he set personal-bests in passes completed (340), completion percentage (69.1%), passing yards (3,733), and touchdowns thrown (15). And now he can add this Art Rooney Award to his trophy case.

Ezekiel Elliott revealed as Cowboys’ nominee for Art Rooney Award

The Cowboys Ezekiel Elliott was one of 32 nominees for the Art Rooney Award.

The NFL recently announced the nominees for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award. Every team selects one candidate, and for the Dallas Cowboys this year that candidate is running back Ezekiel Elliott.

The Art Rooney Award was created just over five years ago, was named after the legendary Steelers owner, and honors a player whose impact is more than just statistical.

According to the NFL, “The award will be presented each year to an NFL player who demonstrates on the field the qualities of great sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for opponents, and integrity in competition.

“A panel of former players from the NFL Legends Community — Warrick Dunn, Pro Football Hall of Famer Curtis Martin, Karl Mecklenburg and Leonard Wheeler — will select eight finalists (four in the AFC and four in the NFC) from the 32 nominees. The eight finalists will be listed on the Pro Bowl ballot under the NFL Sportsmanship Award category when players vote on Friday, Dec. 18.”

Recent nominees from the Cowboys include, Jason Witten, Sean Lee, Brandon Carr, Travis Frederick, Dak Prescott, Byron Jones in 2019, and now Elliott. A Dallas candidate has never been selected as the NFC East finalist.

The list of previous winners are all Hall of Fame caliber players on the field, and Hall of Fame caliber men off the field. Larry Fitzgerald took home the inaugural award, followed by Charles Woodson, Frank Gore, Luke Keuchly, Drew Brees, and Adrian Peterson last season. Joining any list with the likes of those names is something every player should strive for.

The full list of the 32 nominees can be found here at this link.
