Arsenal fans call for Stan Kroenke to sell the team in protest over Super League mess

The images and videos from the protest are amazing.

Arsenal was among the teams that decided to pull out the European Super League that caused so much chaos and pain in the soccer world before it basically collapsed.

We’ve seen some protests from fans already, and even though — as I said — Arsenal is pulling out, there are die-hards who are protesting, calling for owner Stan Kroenke — the same guy who owns the Los Angeles Rams and has his hand in other big-name franchises all over sports — to sell the team.

So here’s a look at fans outside of Emirates Stadium protesting and chanting for Kroenke to be out even after the Super League mess:

Fans could not believe the nonsensical red card that David Luiz was issued against Wolves

Like, how?

There are few topics more divisive in professional soccer than the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR). The replay system was designed to prevent glaring, match-changing errors. But instead, we’ve seen it used to scrutinize things like offside decisions by mere centimeters.

And when a glaring, match-changing error does actually happen, VAR often fails to serve its purpose.

That couldn’t have been more clear than the puzzling decision at the end of the first half of Arsenal’s Premier League matchup against Wolves on Tuesday.

When Wolves’ Willian José made a run at goal, he fell to ground after an apparent foul by Arsenal’s David Luiz. The referee was quick to show Luiz a red card, awarding Wolves a penalty. But replays quickly made that decision look awfully harsh.

Upon review, the backswing of José’s foot sort of made contact with Luiz’s knee. But it wasn’t an intentional contact — more so just two people running naturally. And José’s delayed fall to ground certainly made the entire foul look suspect, at best.

But what did VAR do? It confirmed the call in seconds. Just like that, Wolves converted on the penalty and went into halftime tied at 1-1. Fans could not believe the decision.

To make matters worse for Arsenal, Wolves would take the lead with a João Moutinho goal in the 49th minute.

Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe issued straight red card for headbutting Leeds player

Pepe was dismissed after headbutting Leeds’ Ezgjan Alioski in the second half, and Arsenal fans were furious.

Arsenal was somehow hanging on in their Sunday match against Leeds, maintaining a 0-0 tie despite giving Leeds all sorts of chances in the first half.

The team could have been buoyed by such a thing — it’s always nice when the other team fails to punish you for playing poorly, and Arsenal would have looked to turn the match around and capitalize on their luck in the second half.

Then five minutes into the second half their winger Nicolas Pepe was given a straight red card for headbutting Ezgjan Alioski on Leeds, and welp, there goes your second half right there.

Here’s the headbutt:

It’s unclear what set Pepe off, and while Alioski certainly made a meal of it, you really just aren’t allowed to headbutt guys. That’s in the rules and everything. Zinedine Zidane famously did it, and he let down a whole country when he did it.

Anyway, good luck in the remaining minutes of the match, Arsenal.
