Who is Arlo White? And why is he a surprise as the new LIV Golf announcer?

White has headed NBC Sports coverage of the Premier League since 2014, but has little experience in golf.

Arlo White has a new job, and it might not be one that longtime Premier League viewers would have expected.

White has been confirmed as the lead commentator of LIV Golf, the controversial new Saudi-backed tour that is set to hold its first event this week in London.

Multiple reports have stated that after nine years, White has been replaced by Peter Drury as the lead commentator for NBC’s coverage of the Premier League.

White all but confirmed it himself with a post on Twitter last week, and LIV officials confirmed the news on Monday.

Because of the controversial nature of the tour, LIV was unable to find any American broadcast partners. Instead, its events will stream on the tour’s official website, YouTube and Facebook.

White has been a soccer broadcaster for decades, and has headed NBC Sports coverage of the Premier League since 2014, but has little experience in golf. He previously was a commentator for the Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer as well as the Chicago Fire. He also has a recurring role on the hit series “Ted Lasso.”

According to Monday’s announcement, White will be joined by Jerry Foltz and Dom Boulet in the booth. Su-Ann Heng, a former No. 1 in Singapore, will lead on-course commentating. Troy Mullins, “will serve as an on-course reporter and social influencer.”

The format features a 12-team, 48-player field with a shotgun start. More than 50 cameras, player and caddie mics will be used, with more production value to come as the season goes on.

After leaving NBC’s Premier League coverage, Arlo White joins controversial new Saudi golf tour

Arlo White has taken a role as lead commentator of Saudi-backed LIV Golf after leaving NBC’s Premier League coverage

Arlo White has a new job, and it might not be one that longtime Premier League viewers would have expected.

White has been confirmed as the lead commentator of LIV Golf, a controversial new Saudi-backed golf tour that is set to hold its first event this week in London.

Multiple reports have stated that after nine years, White has been replaced by Peter Drury as the lead commentator for NBC’s coverage of the Premier League.

Though NBC has not officially announced the move, White all but confirmed it himself with a post on Twitter last week.

What is LIV Golf?

LIV Golf is a new professional golf tour that is funded by the Public Investment Fund, the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia that also recently purchased Premier League side Newcastle United.

The new tour is aiming to compete with the PGA Tour by enticing established golf stars with huge payouts.

But the tour has come under fire for being an alleged instrument of “sportswashing,” the process by which a country can launder a poor reputation by participating in global sports.

Golf legend Greg Norman, the CEO of LIV Golf, recently came under fire for his comments on the 2018 assassination of Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi.

“Look, we’ve all made mistakes, and you just want to learn by those mistakes and how you can correct them going forward,” Norman told reporters.

The CIA has concluded that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered Khashoggi’s assassination.

Because of the controversial nature of the tour, it was unable to find any American broadcast partners. Instead, its events will stream on the tour’s official website, YouTube and Facebook.

The list of global networks covering the inaugural event “will be made available later this week.”

American fans of both golf and soccer will hear some familiar voices if they decide to tune in to the LIV Golf Invitational Series this week.

The Saudi Arabia-backed entity led by Greg Norman that plans to rival the PGA Tour finally announced on Monday that Thursday’s first round at Centurion Club outside London can be streamed on the company’s website, as well as YouTube and Facebook. The list of global networks covering the inaugural event “will be made available later this week,” according to a release.

The announcement also stated that NBC Sports’ former voice of the Premier League, Arlo White, would be the play-by-play announcer, with Jerry Foltz and Dom Boulet joining in the booth. Su-Ann Heng, a former No. 1 in Singapore, will lead on-course commentating. Troy Mullins, “will serve as an on-course reporter and social influencer.”
