WBB Recap: Ducks find the win column with victory over ASU

WBB Recap: Ducks find the win column with victory over ASU

It had been a long three weeks between wins for the Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team and all they needed was a little home cooking.

Playing a team 1-20 in their last 21 conference games helped too.

The Ducks used a big second half and defeated Arizona State 65-53 to capture their first Pac-12 victory. Oregon is now 10-7 overall and 1-3 in league action. The Sun Devils are 8-8 and 0-4 in Pac-12 play.

It was 33-29 Ducks at halftime, but then Oregon outscored ASU 16-6 in the third quarter and cruised in the fourth.

Chance Gray led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-17 from the field, including the team’s only two three-pointers on the night. Grace VanSlooten added 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Phillipina Kyei put up her 10th double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Arizona State was led by Journey Thompson’s 12 points.

The bigger Duck team pounded the Sun Devils on the glass to the tune of a 48-27 advantage which included 19 boards on the offensive end and 19 second-chance points.

Now the Ducks will try to build upon this win as they host Arizona Sunday, Jan. 14 for a 12 pm tip.

Head coach JR Payne and the No. 5 CU Buffs women’s basketball team cruised to its seventh straight win on Sunday, beating Arizona State, 81-68.

Colorado is now 3-0 to start conference play for the first time since 1996-97, a season in which the Buffs won the Big 12 Tournament before reaching the Sweet Sixteen. The times were good then for the Buffs, and the times are good now in Payne’s eighth year.

At Desert Financial Arena on Sunday, Aaronette Vonleh enjoyed another 20-point game while Frida Formann, Quay Miller and Maddie Nolan also scored in the double figures.

Colorado women’s basketball closing out road trip at Arizona State

No. 5 Colorado is looking for a road sweep of the Pac-12’s Arizona schools

The No. 5 Colorado Buffaloes women’s basketball team (12-1, 2-0 Pac-12) is streaking as it heads into its next Pac-12 matchup against the Arizona State Sun Devils (8-6, 0-2) on Sunday. With a win in Tempe, Colorado can push its winning streak to seven games, but it would also end some bad streaks.

After Friday’s win against the Arizona Wildcats, Colorado’s first victory in Tucson since 2015, the Buffs have the opportunity to sweep the Arizona road trip for the first time since 2012-2013. A win on Sunday would also give CU a 3-0 conference record for the first time since 1996-97.

The Sun Devils, much like the Buffaloes, have a balanced scoring attack, with four players averaging 8.9 or more points per game. ASU is led by a trio of attacking guards in sophomores Jalyn Brown (14.4 PPG), Trayanna Crisp (11.6 PPG) and senior guard Jaddan Simmons (12.1 PPG).

You can catch Sunday’s game on the Pac-12 Network at noon MT.

Colorado men’s basketball drops close game at Arizona State

Turnovers cost the Buffaloes in their second straight loss

The Colorado men’s basketball team dropped its second straight Pac-12 contest on Saturday as the Arizona State Sun Devils were able to overcome a late Buffs rally.

Trailing 63-53 with 9:11 remaining in the second half, Colorado went on a 13-3 run to tie the game at 66. The Buffaloes had their chances to take the lead but could not get over the hill, ultimately falling 76-73.

Turnovers were the difference in the game, as sloppy ball handling by the Buffaloes led to 13 turnovers that the Sun Devils converted into 27 points. Jamiya Neal and Adam Miller did the heavy lifting for ASU, scoring 19 and 18 points, respectively.

KJ Simpson led all scorers with 23 to go along with four assists. The Buffs also got a lift from the return of Tristan da Silva, who had 17 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Colorado will head to Berkeley on Wednesday to face the California Golden Bears at 9 p.m. MT (ESPNU).

Colorado men’s basketball to face Arizona State in second Pac-12 road game

Colorado is back in action this evening at Arizona State

The Colorado men’s basketball team must quickly put its loss to No. 10 Arizona in the rearview mirror as Arizona State awaits the Buffs on Saturday.

The Sun Devils (9-5, 3-0 Pac-12) have been on a bit of a roller coaster lately, dropping their last three nonconference games before winning three straight to open Pac-12 play.

The Buffaloes (11-3, 2-1) finally had their injury issues catch up to them in Tuscon. The Wildcats dominated the game from start to finish, handing Colorado its first loss in conference play. Reinforcements might be on the way for the Buffs, as Cody Williams and Tristan da Silva remain day-to-day.

All eyes will be on the guard matchup between Colorado’s KJ Simpson and ASU’s Frankie Collins. Collins is leading the Sun Devils in points per game (13.8) and assists (3.5) while Simpson has been having an All-American season with 20.3 points and 4.4 assists per game.

Tipoff is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. MT on ESPNU.

Former five-star DB leaving Florida for Pac-12 program

Former Florida safety Kamari Wilson is headed to the Pac-12. The former five-star recruit committed to Arizona State on Saturday after two seasons with the Gators.

Signing five-star safety Kamari Wilson was one of the early highlights of Billy Napier’s career at Florida, but the former IMG Academy standout will likely play his first meaningful minutes of college football for the Arizona State Sun Devils.

Wilson announced his decision to transfer to ASU on Saturday, Dec. 16. Many believed he’d end up with UCF after he publicly thanked the recruiting staff, but the post-visit praise didn’t lead to anything.

After playing just three games with the Gators in 2023, Wilson decided to silently redshirt, which became obvious after he disappeared from the depth chart. Wilson took to social media after entering the portal on Dec. 7, stating “(his) decision was not based on any external factors that might have been floated around.”

Wilson leaves Florida (16 games) with 40 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one pass deflection and one forced fumble.

Several players from Billy Napier’s transition class at Florida have hit the portal after two years in The Swamp. Quarterback Max Brown is headed to Charlotte, Caleb Douglas picked Texas Tech, Jonathan Odom is going to Eastern Michigan and Princely Umanmielen will stay in the SEC as a Rebel at Ole Miss.

Arizona State gets commitments from a pair of Class of 2022 standouts

Former USC RB Raleek Brown and former Florida safety Kamari Wilson were both within 247Sports’ top 75 prospects in the 2022 class.

Arizona State got two commitments from top-75 prospects in the Class of 2022 on Saturday as former USC running back Raleek Brown and former Florida safety Kamari Wilson both announced they would continue their careers with the Sun Devils. On3’s Hayes Fawcett reported both commitments.

Brown was the No. 3 running back prospect in the class. He served as a Swiss army knife for head coach Lincoln Riley in his freshman season. He toted the ball 42 times for 227 yards as a runner, he caught 16 passes for 175 yards as a receiver, and he scored six touchdowns. He even returned kicks, running back 24 kickoffs for 517 return yards.

The 5-foot-8 utility player changed positions ahead of the 2023 season to play as a wide receiver, but he couldn’t recapture his same usage. He only touched the ball in two games. He finished the season with six touches for 34 yards from scrimmage, and he only scored a single touchdown.

Wilson, the No. 74 overall player and No. 9 safety in 247Sports’ Class of 2022 rankings, also had his best season with the Gators as a freshman. He made 39 total tackles, forced a fumble, and broke up a pass in 2022. He only played in three games in 2023, eventually redshirting the season, and he recorded a single tackle.

Both Brown and Wilson have three years of eligibility remaining. Their announcements come less than a week after former Michigan State quarterback Sam Leavitt announced he would join the Sun Devils for 2024.

After whirlwind 18 months at West Virginia, Jose Perez is enjoying his time at Arizona State

Jose Perez spent 18 months waiting to get back on the floor at West Virginia, which never happened. Now he’s thriving at Arizona State in his final season of college basketball.

On March 8, 2021, Jose Perez dropped 21 points with five assists and four steals for Manhattan in a loss to Rider in the first round of the MAAC Tournament.

That ended up being the last game action for Perez across a whopping 975 days, a time period where he entered the transfer portal following his coach’s sudden firing, landed at West Virginia, was deemed ineligible for the 2022-23 season, remained with the Mountaineers after coach Bob Huggins was let go, and then was back in the portal late this offseason after an academic issue ended his tenure at West Virginia before he was ever even able to play a game.

Perez’s saga is among the strangest in recent memory, which hits many of college athletics’ biggest hot button issues: NCAA overstepping, transfer portal limits, academic issues, and coach misbehavior.

Fortunately for Perez, he was able to once again enter the transfer portal very late in the offseason and landed with Bobby Hurley and the Arizona State Sun Devils, who needed insurance in the guard room in case LSU two-time transfer Adam Miller was denied eligibility for the 2023-24 season.

(As of this writing, Miller has not been cleared by the NCAA to play at Arizona State this year.)

The 6’5 senior guard from the Bronx is just happy to be back on the hardwood, rather than the sidelines, and he’s provided exactly what Arizona State wanted from him: averaging 13.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in nine games, playing about 33 minutes per night and shooting 48.5% on two pointers and 33.3% from beyond the arc.

“It’s fun to be back,” Perez said last week after dropping a season-high 24 points at home against Sam Houston. “Just trying to stack wins and get to the NCAA Tournament again.”

Perez has topped 20 points already in three of his nine games with the Sun Devils, and while the program is off to a rocky start – with a 6-3 record after a loss to San Diego – it would be much worse if Perez wasn’t in the picture.

More importantly, Perez gets to finish out his collegiate career on a high note after spending 18 months frustratingly waiting for the NCAA to let him get back onto the floor and do what he loves.

Arizona State will host TCU on Saturday, December 16 at 10:00 PM ET on ESPNU, followed by Northwestern four days later on December 20 at 8:30 PM ET on ESPN2.

Former Michigan State QB Sam Leavitt announces commitment to Arizona State

The former four-star prospect will still have four years of eligibility remaining after he spent just one season with Michigan State.

Former Michigan State quarterback Sam Leavitt announced he’d committed to Arizona State on Monday.

In a report by 247Sports’ Brandon Huffman, Leavitt said Sun Devils head coach Kenny Dillingham and the Arizona State coaching staff were a big reason for his decision.

“I knew it was the place for me after spending four hours in a position meeting going over everything and seeing the enthusiasm and excitement and creativity for the game that they bring,” Leavitt said in the article.

The four-star high school prospect was 247Sports’ No. 18 quarterback in the class of 2023. He spent just one season in East Lansing, appearing in four games. He completed 15 of his 23 passes for 139 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

He got the most of his work in a game against Minnesota. He attempted 12 passes against the Golden Gophers, completing eight of them for 73 yards and tallying a touchdown and an interception. He also threw seven passes against Michigan, with four completions for 32 yards and an interception.

Leavitt will have stiff competition for the starting job. Fellow class of 2023 quarterback Jaden Rashada, 247Sports’ No. 6 passer in the class, played in three games for the Sun Devils last season. He completed 53.7% of his attempts and threw for 485 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions
