Eric Gentry is thriving in D’Anton Lynn’s defense

D’Anton Lynn and Matt Entz have unlocked Eric Gentry’s potential at USC. It shows how much a player development model, done right, can mean.

USC’s 6-foot-6 senior linebacker, Eric Gentry, transferred to USC from Arizona State in 2022. The Philly Freak, a nickname he received in reference to both his hometown and his dynamic athleticism for his size, has been a force to be reckoned with on the defensive side of the ball this season. Gentry, thanks to the development and teaching he has received at USC from D’Anton Lynn, is leading the Big Ten Conference in tackles for loss (2.2 per game) and solo tackles (6.0 per game). His impressive performances have not gone unnoticed, as he currently ranks second in the nation in tackles for loss and 10th in solo tackles.

In a recent game, Gentry showcased his exceptional tackling skills, leading the team with 12 tackles, including three tackles for loss of eight yards and a sack for minus six yards. He also recorded a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, further solidifying his status as a defensive playmaker.

Gentry’s standout performance this season is a continuation of his impressive collegiate career. In his three-year collegiate career, which includes one year at Arizona State and two years at USC, Gentry has amassed 162 tackles, including 13 for loss and four sacks. His versatility is evident in his contributions, as he has also recorded 10 pass breakups, three quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles, two interceptions, and a blocked kick while appearing in 34 games with 15 starts.

Last season, Gentry played in 11 games, making three starts. During that time, he recorded 46 tackles, including four for loss of 16 yards and a sack. He also added five pass breakups, an interception, a forced fumble, and a blocked kick to his impressive resume.

Gentry’s journey began at Saints Neumann Goretti High School in Philadelphia, where he played both linebacker and defensive end. His talent and dedication earned him recognition as a consensus freshman All-American in 2021 while at Arizona State.

Eric Gentry’s exceptional tackling abilities and his impact on the USC defense have made him a valuable asset to the team. As the season progresses, his performances will undoubtedly continue to shine as he strives to lead his team to success.

USC – Arizona State photo gallery: Trojans didn’t thrive, but they survived

USC’s first road game of the season was a bumpy ride. What did it look like? Check out our USA TODAY photo gallery:

The USC Trojans were fortunate that their trip to suburban Phoenix was not suffocatingly hot. Conditions were cloudy in Phoenix and surrounding areas on Saturday, with occasional sunbreaks but moderate temperatures. It was so mild in Tempe on Saturday night that Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham wore a sweatshirt. This was not an overpoweringly hot day in the desert. By playing at night and not in the middle of the day, USC avoided extreme heat. It would have been easy to think the Trojans would be comfortable for this game and would play smoothly, without hiccups.

That did not happen. USC had a lot of rough edges in its 42-28 win over Arizona State. However, the action shots from the USA TODAY photo library (including contributions from the Arizona Republic) were certainly impressive to look at.

Let’s check out some of these vivid images from Saturday night in the desert:

Arizona State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Sun Devils miss from the Pac-12 slate?

In the past it would be a bad break to miss Oregon State from the Pac-12 slate. Arizona State will take that this year – the Beavers should be even stronger – but not getting to play Stanford hurts. Unless there’s a quick turnaround, that was a very, very winnable game.

2023 College Football Rankings 1-133: First Look

Arizona State Football Schedule What Really Matters

There’s time to ease into the slate. Sort of.

The first four games are at home, but Oklahoma State, Fresno State, and the Pac-12 opener against USC are hardly going to be easy. The Sun Devils have to pull off one of those. That start means there are only four games on the road, and one of them is a 50/50 date with Cal.

There’s a week off to gear up before going on a second half run of three road games in four weeks.

Arizona State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not awful as long as Arizona State can do more to own home.

The program is in a rebuild, but that doesn’t mean it can’t pull off a win or two like it did against Washington last season. With just the one road game before October 21st, there’s a chance to bank enough wins to make a bowl season a possibility.

However, at Washington, Washington State, at Utah, at UCLA, Oregon, and that’s all before closing out against Arizona, The team had better have at least four wins before the midseason or there’s a huge problem.

Kenny Dillingham’s first year at Arizona State will be difficult, but 2023 slate has lots of home games

The good news for ASU: 8 home games. The bad news: Home games include USC, Oklahoma State, and Oregon. Also: Utah and Washington on the road.

The Pac-12 Conference has seen a lot of changes this offseason. The transfer portal has been busy, and the coaching staff has changed at a couple of programs.

One of them is Arizona State, which finally moved on from Herm Edwards and hired former Oregon assistant Kenny Dillingham.

When the Pac-12 schedule was released for 2023, the Sun Devils must not have felt good about the quality of opponents on their slate, even though ASU has eight home games.

Jon Wilner of The Mercury News detailed some nuggets of Arizona State’s schedule, and it’s going to be a tough year in the desert as Dillingham gets started:

“The first year of Kenny Dillingham’s tenure features eight home games, most of them early in the season,” Wilner wrote. “The Sun Devils open league play against USC, and the finish is rugged with Utah and UCLA on the road (in back-to-back fashion) and Oregon and Arizona at home. If ASU plans to become bowl-eligible, it needs to have five wins locked up when November arrives.”

The Sun Devils did land Notre Dame QB Drew Pyne, so that’s a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, playing USC to begin and then Utah and UCLA on the road is a brutal slate for them in the Pac-12.

At least the Herm Edwards era is over.

2022 College Football Schedules: All 131 Teams

Arizona State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Sun Devils miss from the Pac-12 North Division?

For a program in turmoil and with one of the most – let’s just say – interesting teams coming back in 2022, there’s nothing that can be taken for granted. However, missing Oregon from the North helps in a big way, and missing Cal might be a big plus, too.

The team from Tempe having to go to Pullman, Washington to face Washington State in mid-November is a problem, but Washington and Oregon State are home games, Going to Stanford after getting a week off isn’t bad, but …

Arizona State Football Schedule What To Know: It could be a rough start, and …

The Sun Devils should be at least 2-1 to start with Northern Arizona and Eastern Michigan wrapped around a trip to Oklahoma State. And then it gets nasty.

Utah, at USC – Arizona State will know where it stands in the South race right away. If that’s not bad enough, the second half of the season isn’t going to be a breeze with a run of three road games in four weeks and with four of the last six games away from home.

Arizona State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

If everything was rolling and the program had everything in place – losing Jayden Daniels certainly didn’t help – the schedule wouldn’t be that bad.

The road games over the second half of the season are all winnable, and again, missing Oregon helps, it’s still a tough enough overall slate to be a grind considering the reworking that needs to be done.

Arizona State College Football Preview 2021: Offense

This is when the offense needs to start working on a consistently explosive level. The Sun Devils led the Pac-12 in total and scoring offense – the 70-7 win over Arizona helped that – and now almost everyone is back. The skill guys are fantastic, and there’s enough depth and all-around talent to hang punch-for-punch with anyone on the schedule. It all starts with …

Jayden Daniels. The third-year starting quarterback needs to be more accurate and he has to be very, very careful on the move – he ran for 578 yards and seven touchdowns in his first two seasons, but the 6-3, 185-pounder doesn’t have the build to take a ton of deep shots. The talent is there, the decision-making and deep ball ability is there, and the supporting cast is there.

With the lone exception of Frank Darby, every other wide receiver and tight end who caught a pass last season is expected to be back, and the offense gets more help from the transfer portal with Bryan Thompson coming in from Utah.

There’s talent, size, and a whole lot of options to keep bombing away – including spring star Elijah Badger, who missed last year – but as the theme goes for this team, consistency is the key. It was a young group that should grow along with Daniels. Now …

The offensive line has to keep everyone upright. It did a great job last year for the Pac-12’s top rushing offense – again, a few big moments in a four-game season skews things – and it was solid in pass protection.

Four of the starting five on the O line is expected to be back and the runners are in place, too. Rachaad White led the team in rushing and receiving yards, Chip Trayanum is a 230-pound blaster, and Daniyel Ngata is a dangerous young quick back. Daniels can run, too.

Arizona State Sun Devils Football Schedule Analysis: The Sun Devils miss Oregon. Start with that, and the schedule is already not that bad. If they can get by BYU on the road, the non-conference slate is no big deal with Southern Utah and UNLV nice tune-ups for the rest of the slate.

Along with not getting Oregon from the North, missing Cal isn’t all that bad. There’s a back-to-back run late with trips to Washington and Oregon State, but that’s sandwiched in between home games against USC and Arizona. Going to UCLA and Utah, though, will be an issue in the South run.

Pac-12 Conference Teams Missed: Cal, Oregon

Bowl Projections: Texas back to Alamo Bowl vs Arizona State

Lindy’s Sports recently gave bowl predictions in their 2020 preview magazine. UT was in the Alamo Bowl, going up against Arizona State.

The status is college football is currently up in the air thanks to the coronavirus. However, if there is anything that is consistent about the sport, pandemic, or no pandemic, it is preseason bowl projections.

Lindy’s Sports recently dropped their preview magazine for the 2020 season and gave bowl predictions before schedule changes. Texas was once again in the Alamo Bowl, going up against Arizona State this season.

Herm Edward’s squad is an up and coming one, projecting to be Pac 12 contenders for years to come. Sophomore quarterback Jayden Daniels is the star, becoming the first true freshman quarterback to begin the season as the starter in program history.

It would only be the second meeting between the Longhorns and Sun Devils, meeting up in the 2007 Holiday Bowl.

For Texas, returning back to the holiday bowl would be seen as a disappointment. With quarterback Sam Ehlinger entering his senior season and the defense returning 10 starters, the Longhorns should be making a push for a New Year’s Six bowl game.

Even with a 9+1 scheduling method, Texas will still be expected to significantly improve from 7-5 in 2019.

Usually, the Big 12 champion gets an automatic bid to the Sugar Bowl, assuming the College Football Playoff is out of the equation. This season, the New Orleans based bowl will host a semi-final, giving the Big 12 champion an at large bid.

In Lindy’s preview, Oklahoma would represent the conference in the New Year’s Six, facing Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl. It would be the Sooners’ 17th BCS/NY6 bowl game, currently holding a 6-10 record.

A top Wisconsin 2021 CB target chooses Arizona State over the Badgers

A top Badger target commits to Arizona State

The Badgers lost out on a top 2021 target when CB Robert Regan committed to Arizona State this morning.

The California native will head to the Valley of the Sun to play for Herm Edwards and crew. It was all love from the Wisconsin 2021 family even as the Badgers missed out on a top target. 2021 Wisconsin commit T.J. Bollers chimed in to show his support for Regan’s decision.

Florida native Ricardo Hallman is currently the only Wisconsin CB commit in the class of 2021.
