Former Georgia Bulldogs DL named to Arizona practice squad

Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive lineman Jonathan Ledbetter has been named to the Arizona Cardinals practice squad.

Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive lineman Jonathan Ledbetter has been named to the Arizona Cardinals practice squad.

Ledbetter began his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins. He signed with Miami as an undrafted free agent and made his first and only NFL appearance in 2019. The former UGA defensive end played in one game in 2019 before being placed on injured reserve. Ledbetter impressed with four total tackles and a half sack in his only career appearance.

Ledbetter missed the 2020 season with an injury.

The Dolphins cut Ledbetter on Aug. 31. Fortunately, Ledbetter has found a new NFL home and will have some great mentors in Arizona. The Cardinals have NFL veterans like Chandler Jones and J.J. Watt along the defensive front. Perhaps Jonathan Ledbetter can learn a thing or two from them.

Jonathan Ledbetter, who is from Tucker, Georgia, recorded 122 total tackles over his four season career (2015-2018) with the Georgia Bulldogs. Ledbetter is more of a run-stopper, but he did have 4.5 sacks in his career with UGA.

Jonathan Ledbetter fits well into Arizona’s defense as a 3-4 defensive end.

Arizona Cardinals cut former Georgia Bulldogs DB

The Arizona Cardinals have cut former Cincinnati Bengals and Georgia Bulldogs safety Shawn Williams.

The Arizona Cardinals signed former Cincinnati Bengals safety Shawn Williams to a one-year contract this offseason. Now, the Cardinals have cut Shawn Williams.

Williams briefly joined fellow Georgia Bulldog star A.J. Green in Arizona.

Shawn Williams has played in the NFL for eight seasons. He started with the Bengals from 2015-2019 before taking a back-up role last season. Now, Williams will look for another opportunity in the NFL.

Some teams may value Williams’ experience and production. Shawn Williams has 12 career interceptions and has 424 career tackles. Williams was very productive in 2018 and 2019, when the former Georgia Bulldog recorded over 100 tackles in consecutive seasons.

Budda Baker will start at safety for Arizona. The position opposite Baker will likely go to Jalen Thompson.

The Cardinals additionally released safety Chris Banjo. Banjo had a career-best 48 tackles last season.

What’s next for Shawn Williams? Now, it is a waiting game. He will look for another NFL home. Several teams across the league need help at safety including the Carolina Panthers.

Williams may consider retirement or he could play right away for a team that suffers an injury at safety.

It’s going to be very strange seeing Green line up in a Cardinals jersey this season. Dating back to high school, Green has only worn three uniforms: Summerville High School, the University of Georgia, and the Cincinnati Bengals.

But now we have our first sighting of Green in a new jersey, thanks to this video released by the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals will pair A.J. Green with DeAndre Hopkins and Christian Kirk. Green should receive a lot of single coverage and could quickly become one of Kyler Murray’s favorite targets.

Arizona Cardinals GM on AJ Green: ‘He’s still got a lot left in the tank’

The Arizona Cardinals GM thinks former Georgia football WR AJ Green can still play with the best of them.

The Cincinnati Bengals drafted Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver A.J. Green with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Now, for the first time in Green’s NFL career, he’ll be suiting up for another team – the Arizona Cardinals.

The former Bengals star has 9,430 career receiving yards and 65 career receiving touchdowns. Green began his NFL career with five consecutive seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards. In 2019, Green missed the entire year with an ankle injury.

There’s no denying that Green is on the decline of his career, but there’s also no denying that, given the opportunity, the 32 year old can still ball.

Last season, Green hauled in 47 catches for 523 yards and two touchdowns. It was certainly a down year for the seven-time Pro Bowl player.

Despite having his worst season of his career in 2020, Cardinals general manager Steve Keim still has high hopes for Green, the Summerville, South Carolina native.

“It all starts with the tape. I don’t think his stats are really telling a great story about the type of player he still is, in my opinion,” Keim said Monday. “I think he was targeted 118 times, we charted it, I think it was 38 balls that were uncatchable to our scouts and our coaching staff.

“He’s still got a lot left in the tank, in my opinion.”

“Runs great routes, really strong in traffic — I think he was the third-best receiver in the NFL this past year with catching balls in traffic. Really strong hands, still has the vertical speed, runs crisp routes and is a guy with great character.”

Arizona will pair Green with DeAndre Hopkins and Christian Kirk. Green should receive a lot of single coverage and could quickly become one of Kyler Murray’s favorite targets.
