Report: 49ers to release DL Arik Armstead

The #49ers are going to release Arik Armstead according to Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz:

It appears Arik Armstead’s run with the 49ers is over after eight seasons. Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report on Sunday reported Armstead will be released by San Francisco. The report indicates Armstead decided to become a free agent, which indicates there was some sort of ultimatum from the club, although there’s no additional information about the details behind his pending release.

NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reported the 49ers asked Armstead to take a pay cut, and instead he elected for free agency.

The move comes as part of a salary cap crunch the 49ers are facing. It’s also unclear whether he’ll be designated a post-June 1 release. If he’s let go before June 1 the 49ers would carry a $25,860,824 dead cap hit while saving just $2,492,412 against the cap.

A post-June 1 release saves them $18,039,412 against the cap while incurring a $10,313,824 dead cap hit per Over the Cap.

Armstead was the No. 17 pick in the 2015 draft. In eight years with the 49ers he played in 116 games with 97 starts. He had 33.5 regular season sacks, including a career-high 10.0 in 2019 when he led the team in that category. He also tallied 8.0 sacks in 12 career postseason games.

With depth already a problem on the interior of the defensive line the 49ers have to put replacing him at or near the top of their offseason to-do list.

4-Down Territory: Super Bowl LVIII recap edition

Now that Super Bowl LVIII is in the books, and the Chiefs are the repeat champions, Doug Farrar and Kyle Madson break it down in “4-Down Territory.”

Now that Super Bowl LVIII is in the books, and the Kansas City Chiefs are the first team to repeat as champs since the 2003-2004 New England Patriots, it’s time for Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire, and Kyle Madson of Niners Wire, to review the biggest game of the season in  “4-Down Territory.”

This week, the guys have some serious questions to answer:

  1. What does this loss do to Kyle Shanahan, as we have to add it to the other Super Bowl losses?
  2. How might we look at Andy Reid differently now that he has three Lombardi Trophies in five years?
  3. Is Patrick Mahomes the greatest quarterback ever? And if not, what’s the argument against it?
  4. Finally, where do the Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers go from here?

49ers injury update: George Kittle, Arik Armstead to play in Super Bowl

It looks like George Kittle and Arik Armstead are playing in the Super Bowl:

49ers tight end George Kittle and defensive tackle Arik Armstead were limited in Thursday’s practice for the second consecutive day. Head coach Kyle Shanahan after the session though told reporters he expects both Kittle and Armstead will suit up in Super Bowl LVIII.

It makes sense the team would take it easy with two starters dealing with injury problems before the biggest game of the year. They did the same with cornerback Ambry Thomas (ankle) and linebacker Oren Burks (shoulder) with both limited Thursday as well.

Defensive tackle Kalia Davis is working to return from IR and was a full participant. He’s yet to be activated and his chances of returning for the Super Bowl appear slim, though that could change by Saturday.

A status report will be due Friday at which point we’ll get an official update on the availability of Kittle, Armstead, Thomas and Burks.

The Secret Superstars of Super Bowl LVIII

From Jauan Jennings to L’Jarius Sneed, here are 10 underrated players for the 49ers and Chiefs who could make all the difference in Super Bowl LVIII.

For every Super Bowl star you’d expect, there’s a player who comes out of nowhere in a relative sense to take over the biggest game of his life. That was just as true for Green Bay Packers receiver Max McGee in Super Bowl I as it was for Kansas City Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco in Super Bowl LVII.

For the upcoming matchup between the Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII, we’d like to present 10 players — five from each team — whose deeds on the field have gone relatively unnoticed, but every one of them could be the one to take his team’s fortunes over the top.

Here are the Secret Superstars of Super Bowl LVIII.

Wrinkles 49ers can throw at Chiefs to win Super Bowl

Here are a few fun wrinkles the #49ers can throw at the Chiefs in the Super Bowl:

This iteration of the 49ers has been around long enough that there aren’t many secrets about how they want to execute a game plan. They have a ton of star power and enough depth that they can win a lot of games by just lining up and doing what they want to do on both sides of the ball.

The Super Bowl offers a unique opportunity to throw a couple of curveballs that haven’t been put on tape often or at all. Even a couple possessions with a team on its heels trying to adjust on the fly could be the difference between a win and a loss.

San Francisco on Sunday will lean on most of what its done to reach the NFL’s biggest stage, but here are a handful of wrinkles they could throw in to get an edge vs. Kansas City:

49ers injury news: Kyle Shanahan expecting George Kittle, Arik Armstead return to practice

Kyle Shanahan expects good news for the #49ers on the injury front.

The 49ers practices during the Super Bowl bye week came with a small concern about a couple injuries to key players. Neither tight end George Kittle nor Arik Armstead participated in the two sessions the team held over its extra week between the NFC championship and the Super Bowl. It sounds like any concern was alleviated in the days since their last practice.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Tuesday in a press conference said he’s anticipating full participation from both Kittle and Armstead on Wednesday when the team is required to issue a practice participation report.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

“I am, but since I didn’t have to give a report today I haven’t talked to the trainers yet,” Shanahan said. “But, I’m expecting it to be pretty positive.”

Kittle is dealing with a toe injury he suffered in the NFC championship game. Armstead was listed as a non-participant last week with knee and foot injuries he’s been battling for a few weeks.

Both Kittle and Armstead are crucial to San Francisco’s success on both sides of the ball. Whether they practice in full matters less than their availability for the Super Bowl, but the full participation is a good indicator that they’ll be able to suit up Sunday.

Arik Armstead absent from 49ers’ 2nd Super Bowl practice

The #49ers practice participation for Thursday had a little bad news.

The 49ers on Thursday during their Super Bowl by week held a practice after not holding one Wednesday. Since they didn’t take the field for a Wednesday session they only issued a projected practice report, but that report had more good news than the one they issued following Thursday’s practice.

San Francisco still listed tight end George Kittle as a non-participant with a toe injury. That’s not a huge surprise since he’s day-to-day and time off makes more sense to ensure he’s healthy in time for the Super Bowl on Feb. 11. They also listed defensive tackle Arik Armstead as a non-participant because of foot and knee injuries. He was a full participant on the projected Wednesday report.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

It’s unclear whether Armstead had some sort of setback or if he just got an additional day off, but an absence after being listed as a full go is not a particularly positive sign.

The rest of the report looked the same, although Trent Williams was out due to rest Thursday.

Linebacker Oren Burks (shoulder) and cornerback Ambry Thomas (ankle) were still limited, while defensive tackle Kalia Davis (ankle) was still a full participant as he aims to be activated off Injured Reserve. His activation may come down to how Armstead’s health shakes out over the next week.

A pair of former Oregon Ducks are headed to the Super Bowl

A pair of former Oregon Ducks, Arik Armstead and Deommodore Lenoir, are headed to the Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers.

Conference Championship weekend has come to a close, and with the Super Bowl matchup now set between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers, we know for certain that a pair of former Oregon Duck legends will be playing in the big game with a chance to earn a Super Bowl ring.

Both San Francisco defensive end Arik Armstead and cornerback Deommodore Lenoir will represent the 49ers in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks after a pair of incredible seasons with their team. On Sunday night, the 49ers beat the Detroit Lions — and former Oregon legend Penei Sewell — in dramatic comeback fashion, coming back from 17 points down in the first half.

Another Duck, offensive tackle Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu, had a chance to get to the Super Bowl on Sunday with the Baltimore Ravens, but they ended up losing to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.

The Super Bowl will be played on February 11th in Las Vegas at Allegiant Stadium.

49ers injury news all good on 2nd practice report of divisional round

All good news on 49ers 2nd practice report of divisional round.

The 49ers’ second practice report of the divisional round had about as much good news as possible.

All but one player who missed Tuesday’s session was back in action Wednesday, while the players limited Tuesday were full participants Wednesday.

The lone exception to the players returning to the field is defensive end Clelin Ferrell, who has already been ruled out for Saturday with a knee injury.

Barring any setbacks in Thursday’s practice (which will be the final one of the week with their game vs. Green Bay set for Saturday), the 49ers will be about as healthy as possible for their first postseason game of the year.

Here’s the full practice report for Thursday:

Former Rutgers defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day signs with San Francisco 49ers

Sebastian Joseph-Day signs with the San Francisco 49ers.

Just days after being waived by the Los Angeles Chargers, former Rutgers star Sebastian Joseph-Day has found a new home. On Wednesday, the 28-year-old signed with the San Francisco 49ers. Joseph-Day could play an important role for a 49ers team dealing with injuries.

Since making his NFL debut in 2019, the Pennsylvania native has appeared in 69 games for the Rams and Chargers. In that span, he has recorded 200 total tackles and 11 sacks. He also has one interception in his NFL career.

Additionally, Joseph-Day knows what it takes to win a championship. He was part of the Rams 2021 Super Bowl-winning team and appeared in seven regular season games. In San Francisco he will be counted on to help bolster the 49ers tackle depth. Arik Armstead is currently dealing with a foot injury.

[lawrence-related id=33453,33446]

While Joseph-Day’s tenure with the Chargers came to a disappointing end, he can still be a productive piece. In 16 games this season, he has added 18 solo tackles to his resume, the third-highest total of his career.

Through 15 games, the 49ers are a Super Bowl favorite due to an 11-4
record. However, they have shown that they aren’t done adding and have turned to Joseph-Day for help as they look to fortify their roster before the start of postseason play.
